This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Hunger isn't just in the developing world - it's affecting 50 million people right here in the United States, in our cities and neighborhoods. 17 million of those hungry are kids. This is unacceptable, especially since it's an issue that can be solved. All we need is the political will to end hunger now.
Since his election in 1996, Congressman Jim McGovern has been widely recognized as a tenacious advocate for his district, a tireless crusader for change, and an unrivaled supporter for social justice and fundamental human rights. Currently serving his ninth term in Congress, McGovern serves as the second ranking Democrat on the powerful House Rules Committee, which sets the terms for debate and amendments on most legislation; and a member of the House Agriculture Committee.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to discuss a Bahraini prisoner of conscience, Nabeel Rajab, a prominent human rights activist and the president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights. Nabeel Rajab was sentenced to three years in jail simply for engaging in nonviolent political protest.
Nabeel Rajab is not alone. Scores of prisoners are incarcerated in Bahrain because they have called for meaningful reforms. Nabeel Rajab's abusive treatment by Bahraini security forces starkly contradicts Bahrain's pronouncements of full-fledged support for human rights. I ask for the immediate release of Nabeel Rajab and seek the full support of Congress and the Obama Administration.
Nabeel Rajab is a focus of the Defending Freedoms Project, a collaborative initiative spearheaded by the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission that invites members of Congress to stand up for prisoners of conscience around the world through various actions. Today, I invite you to take part in this important non-partisan opportunity. Our voices can make a difference in the release of these prisoners.

James Patrick "Jim" McGovern (born November 20, 1959) is the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 3rd congressional district, serving since 1997. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, McGovern attended Worcester Academy and received a master's degree from American University in Washington, D.C.. While in college he worked as a congressional aide to Senator George McGovern, a two-time presidential candidate he campaigned for. From 1981 to 1996 he was a senior staff member for Representative Joe Moakley.
McGovern first ran for Congress in 1994, where he lost in the Democratic primary. He ran again in 1996, defeating Republican incumbent Peter Blute. He has since been re-elected six times, four of which he was unopposed. A focus of his career has been international human rights, which he has advocated for in countries such as El Salvador, Sudan, and Colombia. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has been ranked as one of the most liberal members of Congress.

Hoh was the first U.S. official known to resign his post in protest over the Afghan war. Today, he is a senior fellow with the Center for International Policy.
