Why Botswana is the Fastest Growing Economy Ever
Botswana is the fastest growing economy in history, But how could that possibly be the case? Why is it so fundamentally better off than all of those that surround it? and Is the miraculous growth just too good to be true?
Miraculously there appears to be a single extraordinary exception to the narrative of poverty in Africa. Straddling the Kalahari Desert in the interior of southern Africa lies the fastest growing economy for the last 50 years. Botswana for all intents and purposes looks identical to its neighbors and this is why in 1965 it was the 7th poorest nation on earth. Discover FRANCISTOWN: One of the Most Beautiful Cities of BOTSWANA | 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT IT
Francistown boasts a lot of names including ‘Capital of the North,’ ‘Ghetto,’ ‘Toropo’ (meaning town), or ‘Ftown.’ Everyone has their way of relating with the city and engaging with its rich diverse culture. What is evident is that a convergence of cultures exists with a general Kalanga overtone. It is dubbed the capital of the North as many Kalanga villagers visit it to conduct business.
No one knows why Francistown is called “ghetto”. The Name seems to have come from the streets and caught on. Some note that it signifies a lack of development and informal settlements that rose in the city. Or maybe it signifies the presence of the old mines. What is evident though is most use it as a term of endearment. Ftown denotes Batswana’s love for nicknames. Long names just must be shortened, and...

The city of Gaborone is buzzing and ever-lively in the early hours of the morning around 6 am. As many make their way to work and school. In the morning traffic, there is patience and understanding between drivers though a few casualties of cars breaking down, etc. We are often taught culturally at homes as a lifestyle hack and that too a cultural norm amongst young women, to awaken early and do the due duties then. This was to allow for immense rest in the mid day, when the sun is at its peak. Follow us on our road trip safari through southern Africa's wildlife paradise Botswana. We drove through most of Botswana, including all the wildlife-rich areas like the Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe Nationalpark including the Chobe Riverfront and the Kalahari. We explored the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the center of the country, the Gcwihaba Caverns in the West and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the south. We also shortly ventured into Zimbabwe to marvel upon the majestic Victoria Falls. We were lucky enough to spot most of the big, and many small, animals which call Botswana home. These include elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, kudus, oryx, ostriches, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, serval cats, warthogs, springboks, impalas and many more.

But over the subsequent decades Botswana has maintained a political structure that's integrity rivals those in Europe, lifted a vast majority of its population from abject poverty, maintained civil and national peace, and invested the revenues of its natural wealth into its future and its people.

Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Botswana
Hello Displorers, welcome to another informative video presented by Displore. As you all know it’s always a pleasure presenting to you some interesting but lesser known facts about the beautiful countries on the African continent. In this video, we are excited to present to you some lesser known facts about the country of Botswana. Officially referred to as the Republic of Botswana, Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. Since then, it has been a representative republic, with a consistent record of uninterrupted democratic elections and the lowest perceived corruption ranking in Africa since 1998 and is currently Africa's oldest continuous democracy. Botswana is topographically flat, with up to 70% of its territory being the Kalahari Desert. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, Zimbabwe to the northeast, and Zambia to the north. A mid-sized country of just over 2.3 million people, Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world with a surface area of 581,730 km2. Around 10 percent of the population lives in the capital and largest city, Gaborone.
If you are new here welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notification so you don’t miss any of our daily uploads.
Formerly one of the poorest countries in the world with a GDP per capita of about US$70 per year in the late 1960s. Botswana has since transformed itself into one of the world's fastest-growing economies. Botswana boasts a GDP per capita of about $18,825 per year as of 2015, which was one of the highest in Africa. The official languages of Botswana are English and Setswana and Botwana has some of the best wildlife and dramatic scenery in Africa.
Without wasting much of your time, here that the top 10 things you probably didn’t know about Botswana.
1. Botswana is an Oasis of Peace
Botswana is the most lasting African democracy. It's an independent state since 1966 and since then it has always enjoyed a relative political stability, without clashes between ethnic groups nor coups unlike in many other African states. The government has initiated environmental protection policies, for which 17% of the territory is natural reserve Imposing limits on tourism to preserve its natural landscapes, of which the most spectacular and the most famous example is the Okavango Delta. Botswana is currently one of the most peaceful and happiest country in Africa.
2. Botswana is The World’s No.1 Diamond Producing Country in Terms of Value
Botswana is probably the world's largest diamond producer. The discovery of a diamond mine in the Orapa area in 1967 gave great impetus to the economy of the country. Located in the Naledi River Valley in southern Botswana, Jwaneng is the richest diamond mine in the world, with a current production of 12.5 to 15 million carats per year. The open pit mine is located 120km west of the capital Gaborone and sits above 3 diamond producing geological formations. The high quality of rough diamonds produced here is outstanding, which is why this industry plays a major role in driving the country’s economy. Desbwana is the largest diamond mining company in the country with DeBeers owning 50%, while the remaining half belongs to the government of Botswana.
3. Botswana Has the World’s Biggest Concentration of African Elephants.
Botswana currently has the world’s largest remaining elephant population. The biggest concentration can be found in Chobe National Park, a majestic 11,000km2 wildlife sanctuary in northern Botswana with over 120,000 of these magnificent animals. Their ability to own one of the largest elephant population in the world is due to Botswana’s environmental protection efforts. Elephants have suffered greatly over the years, with poachers threatening to drive them to extinction. Botswana’s efforts have managed to keep the greatest elephant sanctuary in the world which makes the country a very attractive tourist destination for Elephant lovers.
4. The Okavango Delta In Botswana Is the Largest Inland Delta on The Planet
Botswana boasts of incredible wildlife, but there is more to it than that. There is also the Okavango Delta, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. A staggering 18,000km2 expanse of lagoons, meandering channels, and fertile islands over flowing with wildlife, the Okavango Delta in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert is the largest inland delta on the planet. Its waters never get to the sea, as they are soaked up by the salt pans which we will be looking at next in this video. Okavango is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most amazing wildlife-watching destinations on earth. It was the 1000th inscribed site on the World Heritage list of UNESCO.

Long names just must be shortened, and formal names need a street twist. It’s how we show our affection.
'Toropo' which is jokingly pronounced with the northern accent, comes from taking a jab at the Kalanga people. It notes how the villagers often travel to town for their business. So, the expression 'to town' and how they pronounce it caught on as a name.
Botswana’s second city is not one to miss when you are in the country. As a gateway between the north and south, it is always welcoming a visitor or two. And who knows, you might fall in love and forget the rest of your journey.
Francistown is a gateway for Botswana to connect to Zimbabwe, Zambia, and DRC. In the past, it acted as a recruitment centre for miners who wanted to work the South African mines. A company called Witwatersrand Native Labour Association was formed for that purpose. Miners were recruited from many African countries like Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. They were then transported to South Africa via air or rail. The company’s Barracks housed these miners on their way to or from South Africa. This trade sustained the town after the mines ceased operations. A lot of the miners spent most of their money in the pubs of Francistown.
Traces of this history can be seen in the diversity of people living in Francistown. Some came to Francistown en route to South Africa and never left. Today, many tourists pass through Francistown on their way to explore the Okavango in the north of Botswana. Francistown’s economy still thrives from business brought by passing travellers. Around holidays, Batswana form part of this group as they make their way from the south to the north of the country. Both the main surface route and air route pass through Francistown.
Francistown only got its city status in 1997 when the government of Botswana decided to upgrade it from a town. This classification paved way for more developments. Francistown now boasts an international airport, High court, and sports stadium. As the government began to do more developments in the area, private developments also came along. Two private colleges now run campuses in Francistown.
With the revival of the mines, the economy of the town is bustling again with developments. The city’s road network was uplifted recently with a big interchange right in the heart of the city. A new mall is in the works and businesses are booming again. You can’t miss the growing street market selling anything from grilled fish to wire sculptures.
With the rising unemployment, young Batswana are becoming innovative at taking opportunities for themselves. At the heart of Francistown is the CBD which is always bustling with people and all types of trade. Francistown was built from one street adjacent to the railway line. As you navigate the city, this model is very apparent as every street in the CBD seems to take you to the main street. The city is also one of the few places in Botswana in which you will find one-way streets.

Out of this norm , most awaken early to begin work or school as early as possible, because the midday fills anyone with fatigue as the heat is extensive. This has grown embedded in our lifestyles and has become a part of daily life. At the hours of 7 am to 9am, one can have the savior of having breakfast on the go, a nice round fat cake, or flatbread (which is very different from the Indian flatbread) if hurrying to work is the main priority. Additionally, many breakfast shops are open and serving breakfast at this hour.
At the centre of our everyday life and culture, is food. Traditional food is as common as western food. The only difference is that western pre-made foods or partially made foods bear the heavier price though still common. Households commonly eat both traditional and western foods on a daily basis depending on their choices of diet. The staple foods of Botswana from breakfast to dinner are a variety of foods. In the morning depending on choice and time one can indulge in fat cakes and tea or soft sorghum porridge traditionally known as Motogo, with a special side of thick sour milk and sugar as flavouring or alternatively have cereal and milk. Lunch can be typical of rice and beef stew, or stiff sorghum porridge similar to pap known traditionally as Bogobe with traditional bean leaves also known as Morogo wa dinawa or with the beans themselves.
Gaborone is a developing city, still threatening growth into the outskirts surrounding it. With development, lifestyle modifies and the quality of it is increased. Just like any other city, there exists the affluent as well as the not-so-affluent, but in no way are the lifestyles poor in any aspect. From the availability of water and electricity, and the availability of Wi-Fi, pre-paid or service bought. Gaborone is a city for the working class. This is why you will find many holding a 9-5 job or temporary employment, internships, and student jobs. The city boasts a promising market for digital freelance jobs amongst budding YouTubers and bloggers, social media marketers and copyright writers and so many more. With the right networking skills and work ethic, one can penetrate the market to make this a career for themselves. Unfortunately, Google is yet to recognize the country as eligible for such production.
One filled with boastful modern infrastructure more especially toward the central business district where most highly marketed businesses reside and top restaurants are found. We can pride ourselves on the I-Towers, the tallest building in Gaborone where the affluent can find accommodation for rent. Along its street, there is the availability of restaurants and cafes for the ones resident there and the general public. In areas far from the Central Business District, we can talk about the ever modern and sleek houses situated in areas like Block 8, Block 10 ,close to the diamond mining company and international Airport. Modernization makes its way to the eastern parts of the country with top tier building designs for homes adding a touch of elegance to the scenery.
With the presence of many Asian, western African, and neighbouring cultures embraced in the city, there comes diversity among the people of the city. Culturally we can refer to the many ethnicities brought about by cultural wars of the old in Botswana, we know that percentages of Sotho/ tswana, Ndebele, Herero heritages lay underneath most Batswana identities. And formed most of their ethnicities. Similarly, cultures from neighbouring countries, Zimbabweans, South Africans, Zambians, Namibians, as far as Nigerians and even Tanzanians, Malawians etc. Become diversified in this country. Due to its many business opportunities and promising economic growth. Many come to venture into business here.
