Aaron Dontez Yates (born November 8, 1971), better known by his stage name Tech N9ne (pronounced "Tech Nine"), is an American rapper from Kansas City, Missouri. In 1999, Yates and Travis O'Guin founded the record label Strange Music. Throughout his career, Yates has sold over one million albums and has had his music featured in film, television, and video games. In 2009, he won the Left Field Woodie award at the mtvU Woodie Awards.
His stage name originated from the TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun, given to him by rapper Black Walt due to his fast rhyming style. Yates later applied a deeper meaning to the name, claiming that it stands for the complete technique of rhyme, with 'tech' meaning technique and 'nine' representing the number of completion.
Aaron Dontez Yates was born on November 8, 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri. He began rapping at a very early age, and would rap the letters of his name in order to remember how to spell it. He never met his father, and his mother suffered from epilepsy and lupus when he was a child, which emotionally affected him and inspired him to "search for God." He would wander around abandoned buildings with his best friend, Brian Dennis, hoping to catch a ghost on film. In 2003, Dennis was shot and killed by his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, which further inspired Yates' search for a higher power, as well as giving him the drive to vent his frustrations in his music.

A widely acclaimed drummer from the Bronx, New York, Will Calhoun graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he received a Bachelors degree in Music Production and engineering. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Buddy Rich Jazz Masters Award for outstanding performance by a drummer.
Special Kudos for Will's drumming virtuosity include "Best New Drummer" of 1988 by Modern Drummer Magazine's Readers Poll, "Number One Progressive Drummer" by Modern Drummer Magazine's Readers Poll three times (1989, 1991 & 1992) and Best Drummer" Of 1990 by Rolling Stone Magazine's Critics Poll.
Will Calhoun's unique blend of improvisational and hard rock drumming can be found on each of Living Colour's four Epic releases: the ground breaking multi-platinum debut, Vivid, the critically acclaimed sophomore LP, Time's Up, the 1991 EP, Biscuits, 1993's Stain, and their latest release on Sanctuary Records, CollideØscope. A prolific song writer, Will has co-written many Living Colour compositions and wrote the critically acclaimed song, Pride, on the Time's Up album and Nothingness on the Stain album. As a member of Living Colour, Will received a Grammy Award in 1989 for Best Hard Rock Performance by a group and another Grammy in 1990 for Best Hard Rock Performance. Living Colour also won an International Rock Award In 1991 for Best Rock Band.
In addition to his work with Living Colour, Will has recorded and/or toured with diverse artists including B.B. You can call it what you will, but lead singer Tim Locke says, "We're just a pop band." Then he laughingly concedes a nod to the root-rock and alt-country influences that others hear in the band's music. "Well, let's say we're just a pop band with a pedal steel thrown in occasionally."
Formed in Fort Worth, TX in the spring of 2004, Calhoun began as a collection of friends fleshing out the always-welcome singer-songwriter three-minute manifesto. After percolating for two years, a self-titled debut album was released providing an auspicious glimpse of the "songwriter-of-the-year" accolades that would follow while spawning instant fan favorites "These Are The Dead Days" and "Bright Eyes".
In 2008, Calhoun followed up the 'Gray/Blue' record with its second critically acclaimed album Falter Waver Cultivate, produced by Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Walkmen).
With stand-out tracks "Breathe," "Apocalypse (A Love Story)" and "The Earth Has Lost Its Hold," the group toured extensively in support of Falter, sharing the stage with the likes of Helio Sequence, The Whigs, Phantom Planet, Explosions in the Sky, Elf Power, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Tankus the Henge and Bishop Allen.
Following a whirlwind of hotels, late nights and miles and miles of ubiquitous signposts, the band took a year off to recalibrate their road-tested engine before returning to the studio in 2010 with producer James Barber (Ryan Adams) to record their new expansive 12-track opus, Heavy Sugar.
Ever-evolving, Calhoun's flawless technique, dazzling tone and passionate visceral lyrics take center stage once again on the propulsive immediacy of "Don't Let Go," the heavenly sparse beauty of "Lioness," the lazy-day Americana of "The Engineer," (reminiscent of Wilco/The Jayhawks) and the first single/video "Knife Fight"

With stand-out tracks "Breathe," "Apocalypse (A Love Story)" and "The Earth Has Lost Its Hold," the group toured extensively in support of Falter, sharing the stage with the likes of Helio Sequence, The Whigs, Phantom Planet, Explosions in the Sky, Elf Power, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Tankus the Henge and Bishop Allen.
Following a whirlwind of hotels, late nights and miles and miles of ubiquitous signposts, the band took a year off to recalibrate their road-tested engine before returning to the studio in 2010 with producer James Barber (Ryan Adams) to record their new expansive 12-track opus, Heavy Sugar.
Ever-evolving, Calhoun's flawless technique, dazzling tone and passionate visceral lyrics take center stage once again on the propulsive immediacy of "Don't Let Go," the heavenly sparse beauty of "Lioness," the lazy-day Americana of "The Engineer," (reminiscent of Wilco/The Jayhawks) and the first single/video "Knife Fight"
