Work hurts young people the most

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released in report in late December titled Work-Related Injuries. It confirmed what UNITE already knew which was that young workers suffer the highest rates of work-related injuries and illness.

For every 1000 workers aged 15 to 19 years, 78 were hurt or fell ill as a result of their employment activities. Men aged 20 to 24 had the highest rate of work-related injury or illness at close to 10 per cent and the frequency was generally higher for men than women. The report also states that 43 per cent of workers injured had received no occupational health and safety training about the risks associated with their work.

UNITE action against McDonalds

UNITE is holding ongoing actions against McDonalds. This is to support the right of McDonalds workers to join a union and to protest against McDonalds management bullying young workers.

The next action is taking place this Friday (15/12/06). Come along from 4.00-5.30pm outside McDonalds on Swanston St in the Melbourne CBD. See below for the text of the leaflet we will be handing out on the day.

Unite NZ declares victory against McDonalds

Burger King next on hit list!

After months of negotiation the Unite Union in New Zealand has reached a breakthrough collective employment agreement with fast food giant McDonald’s. Earlier this year Unite also signed agreements with Red Rooster and Restaurant Brands who own KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks.
