Lee Daniels, director of The Butler and executive producer of the smash Fox hit Empire, defended himself against accusations that he got actress Mo’Nique blackballed from Hollywood after she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in one of his films.
Instead, as he told Don Lemon, Daniels had simply asked Mo’Nique to play Hollywood politics during awards season, and she famously refused.
While he praised Mo’Nique’s talents — “she’s brilliant, and I like working with brilliant people” — Daniels said that she made numerous “demands” during the awards campaign for Precious that damaged her own reputation. “She was making unreasonable demands, and she wasn’t thinking — this was when reverse racism was happening, I think,” Daniels told Lemon. “I told her, ‘You have to thank the producers of the film, you have to thank the studios.’ And I think she didn’t understand that, and I said, ‘People aren’t going to respond well if you don’t.”
“This is not just ‘show’. It’s ‘show business,‘” he emphasized. “And you’ve gotta play ball, and you can’t scream — I don’t like calling the race card. I don’t believe in it. If I buy into it, it becomes real. If I knew what I knew when I was 21, I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now.
“Some people call that ‘selling out,’” Lemon noted.
“Well, I guess I’m a sellout,” Daniels responded. “But I’m not going to not work, and I’m not going to not tell my truth. And I’m not going to call people out on their bull. So whatever that means, sell out. I’ll see you in the theaters.”

There have been rumors floating around about Mo’Nique in regards to the FOX hit show, Empire — and she swings by Sway in the Morning to set the record straight.
Allegedly, Lee Daniels the director of the popular TV show, Empire, claims Mo’Nique was never considered for the role of Cookie, but Mo humbly brought proof that she indeed was — a printed email chain between her and Daniel’s team.
She explains to us that she merely wants the truth to be associated with her name and character. And as far as the rumors go about her being “difficult” or a “diva?” She clears that up too.
“Pay me according to my resume.” Mo’Nique says. “Sometimes ‘no’ can mean you’re difficult. When you’re not used to hearing someone say no, that can appear as if you’re difficult… If we keep accepting those low offers, where does it leave our babies that are coming up? We have to think about those babies who are not here yet.”
Transitioning into her current project, Blackbird, she brings fellow actor Julian Walker to talk about the new film, how it feels to be homosexual as a minority and the importance of unconditional love.

“Sean Penn on Tuesday filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against "Empire" co-creator Lee Daniels over comments Daniels made comparing him to the show's star Terrence Howard, who's been repeatedly accused of domestic violence.
Daniels' comments appeared online about a week ago in the entertainment publication The Hollywood Reporter in a story about the upcoming season of the popular Fox television show.

Lee Louis Daniels (born December 24, 1959) is an American actor, film producer, and director. He produced Monster's Ball and directed the film Precious, which received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director; the film won two of the awards.
Daniels was born on Christmas Eve, 1959, in Philadelphia and attended Radnor High School. After graduating, Daniels attended Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. He began his career in entertainment as a casting director and manager after a chance meeting with a Hollywood producer, working on such projects as Under the Cherry Moon and Purple Rain. He continued managing talent, including several Academy Award nominees and winners. The documentary My Big Break features Daniels early in his career when he was managing actor Wes Bentley who starred as Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. In the documentary a dynamic Daniels animatedly comments on Bentley's reluctance to capitalize on his newfound celebrity status. Lee has a sister Joyce Daniels Fennell from Philadelphia. Daniels and Joyce's father, Officer William Daniels, is from West Philadelphia. When he arrived in Hollywood, Daniels first worked for a nursing agency, then created his own agency at age 21. He sold his agency for approx $2 million and went to work as a production assistant. Later, he realized he had not paid taxes on his income but paid them off in time.

Kanye Omari West (

There have been rumors floating around about Mo’Nique in regards to the FOX hit show, Empire — and she swings by Sway in the Morning to set the record straight.
Allegedly, Lee Daniels the director of the popular TV show, Empire, claims Mo’Nique was never considered for the role of Cookie, but Mo humbly brought proof that she indeed was — a printed email chain between her and Daniel’s team.
She explains to us that she merely wants the truth to be associated with her name and character. And as far as the rumors go about her being “difficult” or a “diva?” She clears that up too.
“Pay me according to my resume.” Mo’Nique says. “Sometimes ‘no’ can mean you’re difficult. When you’re not used to hearing someone say no, that can appear as if you’re difficult… If we keep accepting those low offers, where does it leave our babies that are coming up? We have to think about those babies who are not here yet.”
Transitioning into her current project, Blackbird, she brings fellow actor Julian Walker to talk about the new film, how it feels to be homosexual as a minority and the importance of unconditional love.

Comedienne and Academy Award winning actress Mo’Nique stepped into the studio with her husband/manager Sidney Hicks Friday morning – and together they immediately took on all of the widely-reported attacks, all of the tweets, all of the rumors!
And topping that list during her visit with Ryan and (via phone) Wanda, was clearing up some misunderstandings about her relationship with Lee Daniels, his television hit Empire, and Daniels’ Oscar-nominated film The Butler.
“I was offered the part of (‘The Butler’s’) Gloria,” Mo’Nique said of the role played by Oprah Winfrey. “I was offered the part of (‘Empire’s) Cookie,” she continued.
“They’re putting my character in question,” she continued. “And they’re putting my reputation in question.”
And with that – and just as matter-of-factly – Mo’Nique and her husband went on to assert their positions in the online and on-air back-and-forth between the parties, underlining their points with compelling personal recollections.

Personally, I argue that Don's love for the show is his subtle way of co-signing on Daniels' effort to use the show as a way to "blow the lid off of homophobia in the black community." So, it appears that black America is in the cross-hairs of this show and Lee's persistent effort to promote anti-black propaganda.
Sorry Don, but I can't sign off on that. Fighting for gay rights is admirable, but bullying is not acceptable. That's what this conversation is all about.
