Anime Recommendations and Open Thread

(Photo: You Lie in April t-shirt on sale at the NeatoShop)

It's the end of the world as we know it, which is why I watch anime instead of the news. I've watched a lot in the past few months. So, as usual, I will tell you some of the best and ask you, dear readers, to recommend other titles.

Erased (Boku Dake ga Inai Machi) is the greatest anime I have ever seen. I recommend it for not only anime fans, but also to non-anime fans.

Anime is like beer. You either like it or can't understand why anyone would consume it. Erased, however, is an anime perfect even for people who don't like anime.

It's a thriller and murder mystery. The main character is Satoru Fujinima, a 29-year old failed manga artist. He finds himself thrown back in time to when he was 10 years old. Back then, his peaceful childhood was upended by a serial killer who murdered several young girls in his town, including some in his own class.

Satoru realizes that he has a chance to find the killer and stop him. In the body of his 10-year old self, he sets out to do precisely that.

Erased is an original story with an unpredictable plot and vivid characterization. The suspense in every episode demands eager anticipation of the next episode. It is brilliantly written and directed.

Star Wars Episodes IV and VII Comparison

When you saw The Force Awakens, you were reminded of the first Star Wars movie, admit it. But you don’t know how close they really are until you’ve seen this shot-for-shot comparison.

(vimeo link)

But when you put two wide-screen movies side-by-side, they are way too small on an internet video, so you’ll want to make this full-screen to really see the similarities. Yes, this contains spoilers. I think. -via Digg

This Is a Fire Truck

(Photo: Transmash-Omsk)

If firefighters need to respond to a call to a bad neighborhood, this would be the way to arrive in safety and style.

The Omsktransmash СПМ is the Russian Army's new armored firefighting vehicle. It's a 60-ton tracked vehicle made from T-72 and T-80 tank parts. Jalopnik reports:

“СПМ is designed to extinguish fires and conduct rescue operations in the arsenals, bases and warehouses storing explosives, clearing the aisles to the fire, laying firebreaks in forest fires,” the company explains. […]

Only three people crew the behemoth firefighting tank, which looks to be about 30 meters long. It holds 25 cubic meters of water and other extinguishing agents, which it can spray up to a 100 meters.

I want one. You know--for puttering around town and going shopping.

Pizza Proposals

When you want to pop the question to the love of your life, nothing says it like pizza. Whether that’s a good thing or not is totally up to the couple involved. For most of us, how the question is asked is less important than whether it is asked at all. But everyone loves pizza, and it’s a creative medium composed of different foods that can be arranged, plus often a nice box with a big lid to write on the inside of. See the efforts of 15 people who proposed marriage with a pizza, and one with ice cream, at Buzzfeed.

How to Sound Smart in Your TED Talk

(Video Link)

Will Stephen is a comedian with the Upright Citizens Brigade and a writer who has published with the New Yorker, New York Magazine, and CollegeHumor.

Will Stephen is smart. You can tell because he's delivering a TED Talk. Only smart people get to deliver TED Talks. And, more importantly, only smart people watch and--if at all possible--attend TED Talks in person.

So if you cannot attend a TED Talk yourself, then make sure that you are seen in public watching a recording of one. Or just link to a TED Talk on social media and tell people how meaningful it was to you.

This particular TED Talk would be a good pick. It will prepare you to deliver your own TED Talk, as Stephen explains in detail how to enunciate, gesticulate, and obfuscate in ways that will make you appear intelligent to people who like to watch TED Talks. You know--smart people like you.

Tubular Glass Tree House

Kazakh architect Aibek Almassov has designed a cylindrical home made of glass and transparent solar panels that encloses a full-grown tree like a greenhouse. And it’s a livable space with a full bath, kitchen, living and sleeping areas, and a spiral staircase to four floors. While there doesn’t seem to be much privacy, it can be built in a thick forest with trees nearby or in a clearing. And it may just be built, now that Almassov has two sponsors, one of which manufactures glass and transparent solar panels. But back to the greenhouse idea: if you can get by having tree branches in your way for some home activities, what happens when they grow and flourish? See more pictures of the house and floor plans at Dezeen. -via Everlasting Blort

6 Horror Movies for Toddlers

It's not your toddler's fault that he had an accident. The potty is safe only when you're there. Otherwise, the potty monster visits. If he goes there instead of in his pants, it will snatch him and pull him in.

This isn't a real horror movie . . . yet. But it could be one. Andy Herald of How to Be a Dad has 6 great pitches to offer producers. They're terrify any toddler at bedtime, which is, of course, precisely what every parent of a toddler wants to do.

Colorado Crime Spree Played Out Like Real Life GTA

Parents used to live in fear of their video game obsessed kids playing Grand Theft Auto then deciding it would be a grand idea to steal a car and lead the police on a high speed chase, but thankfully no kid was ever that dumb.

However, convicted dumb criminal Ryan Stone proved age does not guarantee wisdom back in 2013 when he started his GTA in real life crime spree by stealing a red Ford Edge left running in a gas station parking lot.

But Ryan had just stolen a car with a four-year-old in the back and realized he needed to bail out, so he pulled a GTA move and blocked off another car on the road, dragging the driver out before speeding off again.

After a failed attempt to jump cars once again Ryan took off on foot, the scene ending dramatically yet unlike GTA because the helicopter didn't mow him down in the middle of the street.

(YouTube Link)

Whether he was actually trying to imitate the video game series or not is unknown, but everyone involved is thankful the incident did not play out like GTA because nobody was killed or seriously injured during the spree.

Cadbury Creme Egg Filled Donuts

Like any sensible person, I plan to spend the Easter weekend month eating nothing but Cadbury Creme Egg-based foods. For dinner today, I'll serve my family donuts made to look like the famous eggs. Chrisy of the food blog Homemade Hooplah offers a recipe for these instantly-recognizable donuts. The filling is made of corn syrup, butter, vanilla, and Cool Whip. The frosting is, appropriately, made from Cadbury-brand chocolate.

A History Of Batman Movies That Almost Were

There have been a lot of Batman movies, eight if you count only the live-action series beginning in 1989. But there were more that were conceived, proposed, pitched, or written that never made it to the screen -and some of them are pretty weird. Blockbuster movies these days always come with an implied possibility of a sequel, so producers are constantly thinking of “the next one.” Such was the case for Joel Schumacher’s 1997 movie Batman and Robin.

Nicolas Cage as the Scarecrow. Courtney Love as Harley Quinn. Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jim Carrey returning as the Joker, the Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, and the Riddler. More Bat-Nipples. All this, and so much more, was set to happen in Batman Unchained, Joel Schumacher’s follow-up to Batman and Robin that never happened because, well, he made Batman and Robin. Mark Protosevich’s script dealt with Batman “learning to conquer fear and to confront the demons of his past,” according to the Hollywood Reporter, including “sadistic” Harley and “brilliant” Scarecrow teaming up to drive the Dark Knight insane and send him to Arkham Asylum. Schumacher told Protosevich that he had written “the most expensive movie ever made,” and when Batman and Robin bombed, the studio “pulled the plug on the whole project.”

That’s just one example of five unmade Batman movies you can learn about at Uproxx.

Suvet Is a Duvet That You Wear All Day

A duvet is a British term for a fluffy comforter. To encourage people to sleep more, the Jurys Inn Hotel Group in the UK made suits made from these soft pieces of bedding. In a way, it's like staying in bed all day. If you ever feel the need to nap, you don't have to search for a bed because you're already in one. Just lie down wherever you are, even if it's in the office or on the Underground.

What Does Human Flesh Taste Like?

Many people have wondered what human flesh tastes like, but cannibalism is a totally taboo topic unless you approach it scientifically, a method of inquiry that may require a bit of self sacrifice.

Brit Lab's Greg Foot learned that lesson the hard way, as he submitted to having a piece of muscle extracted from his leg in his quest to find out what human flesh tastes like.

 photo anigif_enhanced-15911-1458671488-2_zpsiaahvzdk.gif

Greg doesn't eat his own flesh so don't worry, but in order to figure out what combination of meats would approximate the taste of human flesh he had to cook his leg meat to get the aroma right.

The 10 Most Powerful Telekinetics in Movie History

The ability to move things with only the power of one’s mind can power horrifying movie plots. Even when it’s not the focus of a film, it opens up the opportunity for great special effects. How do you defend yourself from someone who doesn’t even have to be close to attack you? There are a lot of movies that harness the power of fictional telekinesis, but few that were more terrifying than Carrie.

For being a scared little high school girl for most of the movie, Carrie is one of the most powerful figures on this list. Let’s see, she literally trapped her classmates in a burning gym, cooking them all as revenge for getting a blood bucket dumped on her, she stopped her mom’s heart with her mind and then as a grand finale, sucked her entire house into hell. Not bad.

That still leaves nine movies on this list of telekinetic cinema, which you’ll enjoy at TVOM.

Star Trek Peg Dolls

Okay, fine: the missing spot is for Tasha Yar. Did you really have to ask right in front of them? Now you've upset them. I can't take you anywhere.

I'm having trouble tracking down the origin of these wooden peg dolls showing characters from the original series and The Next Generation. I suspect that they're from a now-closed Etsy shop because that's where the internet trail runs cold.

15 Big Facts About My Big Fat Greek Wedding

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is in theaters today, so it might be a good time to talk about the phenomena that was Nia Vardalos’ 2002 movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It was shot on a budget of only $5 million, but blossomed into the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Will the sequel do as well? Only time will tell, but here’s some things you should know about the original.

1. IT BEGAN LIFE AS A STAGE SHOW IN LOS ANGELES.

In 1997, Second City alum Nia Vardalos wrote and performed a one-woman show about her Greek family. "I basically took every Greek wedding I’ve ever been to, including mine, and on a scale of one to 10, I turned it up to an 11," Vardalos said. Los Angeles' Hudson Theater over-sold the six-week run of the show after Vardalos sent flyers to every Greek church in Southern California. Rita Wilson, who is also Greek, attended one of the performances; she went backstage after the show and told Vardalos that it should be made into a movie. One week later, Wilson's husband, Tom Hanks, attended a performance.

3. DISNEY WANTED MARISA TOMEI TO STAR.

Before Hanks' call, several production companies expressed interest in purchasing the rights to Vardalos' project. One wanted to turn it into a story about a Hispanic family. Disney was interested in buying the story as is, but wanted Marisa Tomei to star in it. Hanks and his production company, Playtone, saw Vardalos playing herself.

And no one could have performed the role better, because the script was based on her experiences and the people she knew. Read more about My Big Fat Greek Wedding at mental_floss.

Where is Shakespeare's Skull?

The year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. In preparation for a television special on the Bard, Channel 4 sent investigators to Shakespeare’s burial site at Holy Trinity church in Stratford-on-Avon, where they used ground-penetrating radar to see inside the crypt. What they found gives credence to a rumor that Shakespeare was the victim of grave robbers over 200 years ago. His head looks to be missing.

The most striking conclusion is that Shakespeare’s head appears to be missing and that the skull was probably stolen from what is a shallow grave by trophy hunters.

Kevin Colls, the archaeologist who led the team, said the grave was not as they had expected. “We came across this very odd, strange thing at the head end. It was very obvious, within all the data we were getting, that there was something different going on at that particular spot. We have concluded it is signs of disturbance, of material being dug out and put back again.”

The evidence is not exactly conclusive, and the church’s vicar isn’t disposed to disturb the grave any further. The Channel 4 special on Shakespeare will air Saturday night. -via Metafilter

Microsoft Deletes Chatbot Over Offensive Tweets

Microsoft launched an artificial intelligence chatbot on Twitter, to see how interacting with other social media users would teach the program conversational skills. The bot was named Tay and had a female profile pic. Tay’s developers sadly neglected to take into consideration what happens when the internet public is encouraged to exert influence.

But Tay proved a smash hit with racists, trolls, and online troublemakers, who persuaded Tay to blithely use racial slurs, defend white-supremacist propaganda, and even outright call for genocide.

Microsoft has now taken Tay offline for "upgrades," and it is deleting some of the worst tweets — though many still remain. It's important to note that Tay's racism is not a product of Microsoft or of Tay itself. Tay is simply a piece of software that is trying to learn how humans talk in a conversation. Tay doesn't even know it exists, or what racism is. The reason it spouted garbage is that racist humans on Twitter quickly spotted a vulnerability — that Tay didn't understand what it was talking about — and exploited it.

Tay's Twitter feed has since been deleted while the team makes “adjustments,” which presumably will include filters. It’s an example that proves that any public demonstration of technical engineering (as well as PR campaigns) needs to be run through a consult with a devil’s advocate. You can see some examples of the offensive deleted Tweets at Business Insider. -via Digg

Burgergrill Kids - You Can See My House From Up Here!

Burgergrill Kids by Kgullholmen

When Bob brought home some back alley beef that he bought at half the price of the regular stuff he had no idea whether the stuff would make people sick or not, but he didn't much care considering Teddy would probably eat most of the burgers by himself. Bob whipped up a few test burgers just to make sure he wasn't feeding his customers anything that would kill them in the restaurant, but before he could eat the burgers the kids had scarfed them down. Tina said "I feel funny" then started to float off the ground, which made Gene fart and immediately start to float too. Soon the three Burgergrill Kids were flying all over the place, and Bob was left wondering if it was too late to buy more of that back alley beef...

Despite what Louise and Linda say this Burgergrill Kids t-shirt by Kgullholmen is very tasteful and totally awesome, grab one and watch spirits soar wherever you go!

Square People Took Bus Tours To Gawk At Hippies On Haight-Ashbury

The Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco was the official heart of the Summer of Love, the hippie mecca that attracted flower children from all over the country while repulsing the nation's squares.

Things got mighty freaky in Frisco during those free love days, and you could see all kinds of strange sights and interesting people on the sidewalks in and around Haight-Ashbury, making it a prime stop for a bus tour.

In 1967 San Francisco Chronicle reporter J. Campbell Bruce and photographer Art Frisch took a ride on one of these ridiculous Grey Lines bus tours dubbed the “Hippie Hop” to shoot some pics and show the world what the squares were squawking about.

This "descent into psychedelia" looks pretty tame to our modern eyes, but imagine the wonder and horror those (mostly Midwestern) squares felt when they saw what those hippies were up to on those acid soaked SF streets!

What happens when an artificial intelligence entity is born? First off, the creator does not want to name it Barbara. It has a lot to learn in a hurry, and even though it can absorb the sum total of human knowledge in an instant, it still doesn’t know as much about human nature and the true meaning of power as the average house cat does. The Biggest Unsolved Art Heist

At 1:24 a.m. on March 18, 1990, two policemen demanded to be buzzed in by the guard at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. At least, they looked like policemen. Once inside the Venetian-palazzo-style building, the men ordered the guard to step away from the emergency buzzer, his only link to the outside world. They handcuffed him and another guard and tied them up in the basement. For the next 81 minutes, the thieves raided the museum’s treasure-filled galleries. Then they loaded up a vehicle waiting outside and disappeared.

Later that morning, the day guard arrived for his shift and discovered spaces on the walls where paintings should have been. Rembrandt’s “Storm on the Sea of Galilee,” Vermeer’s “The Concert,” Manet’s “Chez Tortoni,” and five works by Edgar Degas were missing. In some places, empty frames were still hanging, the priceless works crudely sliced out.

It was an appalling attack on a beloved museum, the personal collection of an eccentric heiress who handpicked the works on travels through Europe in the 1890s. The crime sparked a sweeping multinational investigation by the museum, the FBI, and numerous private parties. To date, the Gardner heist is the largest property theft in U.S. history—experts have assessed the current value of the stolen art at more than $600 million. Twenty-six years later, the case remains unsolved.

In fact, not a single painting has been recovered. But in March of 2013, the FBI signaled that it was close to solving the mystery. Officials announced that investigations had uncovered new information about the thieves and the East Coast organized crime syndicates to which they belonged. The art world buzzed over the news, yet one man doubted what he heard.

These Boots Were Made for Dunking

Somewhere in the world, for the modern urban cowboy, there is the basketball boot. You can be the master of the court and corral for a mere $200.

These are apparently Tony Lama brand boots. Sadly, they appear to have been discontinued. It was inevitable, though. All the great cowboys eventually ride off into the sunset.

Man Is Arrested For Failing To Return VHS Copy Of Freddy Got Fingered

Imagine being one of the avid Tom Green fans who rented Freddy Got Fingered on VHS fourteen years ago and forgot to return the tape, what would you expect to happen?

Probably not much since VHS tapes have gone the way of the Dodo, but a North Carolina man discovered that failing to return a VHS tape can result in an arrest warrant and a fine.

James Meyers, aka MadInfluence, was pulled over for a broken tail light and then served by Concord police officers for failing to return a VHS copy of Freddy Got Fingered 14 years earlier.

(YouTube Link)

When Tom Green heard about the incident he offered to pay the $200 fine if that would help James out, but James should really just sell the VHS tape on Ebay as an "internet oddity" to raise the funds.

And speaking of oddities:

So he commissioned Atlanta-based woodworker Garrick Andus to carve a crib inspired by the horror imagery of H.P. Lovecraft. Its spreading, writhing, all-consuming tentacles express the hopes that all of us fathers have for their children.
