Just three months ago we purchased 5 acres of land in the Pacific Northwest where we will be working to develop our off grid homestead 100% from scratch. While we will be working to build our timber frame barn and eventually timber frame house, winter has arrived and we have neither! We are boondocking in our RV and needed a way to winterize + stay warm.
We decided to build this little cabin as an add-on to our RV. Right now, our RV is under a ShelterLogic Garage-in-a-Box which has no insulation whatsoever. We thought that if we could build a small 10x12 cabin onto the end of the carport that we could heat the entire enclosure with a wood stove. We've been working to insulation the carport fully, so between all of our efforts we have managed to heat the inside to 68 degrees!
The best part of all is that we built this off grid cabin ourselves with reclaimed materials. Instead of spending $3,000+ to build this cabin, we did it for about $300. Most of these materials came from a demolition we were able to help out with which you can see in our other videos. We also were able to salvage many second-hand building materials with a barter flyer we put up around town.
We are loving our little cabin! Have we ever built a cabin before? NOPE! Do we feel more confident about our building skills? Yes! Did we learn a lot that we can implement when building our barn and house? YES!

Well the foundation and floor is done, now begins the laborious task of building walls. So you want to scribe fit your logs?... in this two part video I'll show you how I am using the scribe-fit technique to build my off grid log cabin.
The basic method of building scribe-fit log walls has remained unchanged for centuries. One log at a time, a log is placed on top of another and then using a Scribe (divider with bubble levels), carefully run the tool along the bottom log which transfers it's unique contours onto the log above.
I should add that this is definitely NOT the fastest way for one man to build a house. If you are in a hurry to get a roof over your head, as I am before the snow starts to fly, you may want to consider a different log building method. I do believe that scribe fitting offers a better look , tightest fit and best insulation value of all the hand-crafted styles.

About the deer: This was a very sad situation where the deer was likely not injured in the crash (the driver had slowed down a lot beforehand), but he was in shock and tried to jump over a metal guard rail several times and likely broke one or both of his front legs in the process. :( I am sorry if this footage offended you, but since there was no violence or blood in the footage, I decided to show it as it was part of my life.

That Dog (styled as that dog.) is a Los Angeles-based rock band that formed in 1991 and dissolved in 1997, reuniting in 2011. The band consists of Anna Waronker on lead vocals and guitar, Rachel Haden on bass guitar and vocals, her sister Petra Haden on violin and vocals, and Tony Maxwell on drums. Their punk power-pop songs were full of hooks and many layered vocal harmonies.
Lead vocalist Anna Waronker is the daughter of record industry mogul Lenny Waronker, the sister of sometime Beck and R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker, and is married to Steve McDonald of Redd Kross fame. Petra and Rachel Haden are daughters of jazz bassist Charlie Haden.
The group began when Anna and a friend, Jenni Konner, began writing short punk songs about boys in her bedroom. Waronker had known Petra and Rachel Haden since high school, so they fluidly found their way in to playing her songs with her. Mutual friend Tony Maxwell picked up the drum duties.
Their first album, which was self-titled, was originally released on a limited run as a double 7" on the independent label Magnatone Records in 1992. It was soon after re-released on cassette and compact disc by Geffen. During this time, the band was good friends with, often played on records by, and toured with label mates Beck and Weezer. Members contributed to the Beck songs "Girl of My Dreams" and "Totally Confused", as well as Weezer's "I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams", all released as B-sides by the aforementioned artists.

While we will be working to build our timber frame barn and eventually timber frame house, winter has arrived and we have neither! We are boondocking in our RV and needed a way to winterize + stay warm. We decided to build this little cabin as an add-on to our RV. Right now, our RV is under a ShelterLogic Garage-in-a-Box which has no insulation whatsoever. Part 1 - Scribing and Notching Part 2 - Chainsaw work on lateral and saddle notches Well the foundation and floor is done, now begins the laborious task of building walls. So you want to scribe fit your logs?... in this two part video I'll show you how I am using the scribe-fit technique to build my off grid log cabin. The basic method of building scribe-fit log walls has remained unchanged for centuries. One log at a time, a log is placed on top of another and then using a Scribe (divider with bubble levels), carefully run the tool along the bottom log which transfers it's unique contours onto the log above. Here you can see how the floor was built on our little off grid log cabin. During this phase of construction we were dealing with several major fires in our area, ironically there we were trying to build our future home whilst our neighbors were packing up and leaving. Just three months ago we purchased 5 acres of land in the Pacific Northwest where we will be working to develop our off grid homestead 100% from scratch. While we will be working to build our timber frame barn and eventually timber frame house, winter has arrived and we have neither! We are boondocking in our RV and needed a way to winterize + stay warm.
We decided to build this little cabin as an add-on to our RV. Right now, our RV is under a ShelterLogic Garage-in-a-Box which has no insulation whatsoever. We thought that if we could build a small 10x12 cabin onto the end of the carport that we could heat the entire enclosure with a wood stove. We've been working to insulation the carport fully, so between all of our efforts we have managed to heat the inside to 68 degrees!
The best part of all is that we built this off grid cabin ourselves with reclaimed materials. Instead of spending $3,000+ to build this cabin, we did it for about $300. Most of these materials came from a demolition we were able to help out with which you can see in our other videos. We also were able to salvage many second-hand building materials with a barter flyer we put up around town.
We are loving our little cabin! Have we ever built a cabin before? NOPE! Do we feel more confident about our building skills? Yes! Did we learn a lot that we can implement when building our barn and house? YES!

About the deer: This was a very sad situation where the deer was likely not injured in the crash (the driver had slowed down a lot beforehand), but he was in shock and tried to jump over a metal guard rail several times and likely broke one or both of his front legs in the process. :( I am sorry if this footage offended you, but since there was no violence or blood in the footage, I decided to show it as it was part of my life.

Here you can see how the floor was built on our little off grid log cabin. During this phase of construction we were dealing with several major fires in our area, ironically there we were trying to build our future home whilst our neighbors were packing up and leaving.
Needless to say we did not document this phase very well so hopefully viewers of this video will still be able to get a general idea of how we built the floor.

I decided to spend another stormy night in the cabin. It certainly was a wild and stormy night but we didn't get as much snow as was forecast. I baked some buttermilk biscuits and had my dinner and breakfast in the cabin. Paul Cutting bought his first log cabin for $600 and with no background in construction, he began to meticulously take it apart, documenting where each piece was placed so some day he could put it back together in an authentic fashion. He put thousands of hours into the home's demolition while simultaneously driving the countryside in search of more of these log homes.. Students from the University of Trondheim have embraced the Norwegian cabin tradition and have built/rehabbed a network of 23 small cabins available to students interested in overnighting in isolated nature. The group- NTNUI (NTNU sportsklubb)- began in the 1940’s when a former Trondheim student was killed in WWII. His parents donated money and helped build the first cabin named Nicokoia after their son Nicolay. Today, the student group has built or renovated nearly two dozen “koiene” (huts). All are off-grid, many are only accessible by hiking, or cross-country skiing, several hours. You've reached cruising altitude on your transatlantic flight. The crew has turned on their cool new blue nighttime lights, and it's time to fall asleep. The super relaxing jet white noise will block out extraneous noise and calm your mind. You can also use it for studying, reading, homework, writer's block, etc.
By the way, what's your favorite seat on the airplane? For instance, if I fly Southwest and can choose my seat, I always aim for the emergency exit row seats. They have so much more legroom. Also, there's one seat on each side of the aisle that has no seat in front of it, to make room in case people had to use the emergency exit. If you get that seat, you can recline your chair and stretch your legs out fully. Totally awesome. Okay, I'm curious to hear your seat favorites for long flights.

I decided to spend another stormy night in the cabin. It certainly was a wild and stormy night but we didn't get as much snow as was forecast. I baked some buttermilk biscuits and had my dinner and breakfast in the cabin.

The recipe for the biscuits:
SACO Buttermilk Biscuits
4 Tbsp Buttermilk Powder
2 Cups all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp sugar
1/3 cup shortening
2/3 cups of water
Preheat oven to 450°F. Sift flour, Saco Cultured Buttermilk Blend, baking powder, soda, salt and sugar into a large bowl. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture is the texture of coarse meal. Make a well in center of flour mixture and pour in water; mix lightly with a fork, just until dry ingredients are moistened and dough holds together. Turn out onto lightly floured surface and knead lightly two or three times, then roll out with a floured rolling pin to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut in rounds with a floured biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes or until biscuits are puffed and golden brown. Remove from oven and brush tops of biscuits with melted butter.

Paul Cutting bought his first log cabin for $600 and with no background in construction, he began to meticulously take it apart, documenting where each piece was placed so some day he could put it back together in an authentic fashion.
He put thousands of hours into the home's demolition while simultaneously driving the countryside in search of more of these log homes..
These were homes that were built between 1850 and 1870 by the first white settlers to the region, mostly Norwegian Americans who took advantage of the abundant local forests to build their homes entirely of logs. Most of the logs are hidden behind siding so their status is a bit of a secret,
In the past 6 years, Cutting has taken down 10 log homes (the 1st cost $600, another $300 and the rest were free) and he's rebuilt 4 of them. He lives in one and at just 16 feet by 17 feet, it's small and quirky, but it cost him just $20,000 to build (not including 2 years of his labor) and he loves the quality of his salvaged home.
Cutting has rebuilt one home and a barn for clients, but he doesn't think he wants- or can- make a business out of this work. Instead, he hopes to carve out a living on his family farm. He's trying to go from hobby farming to expanding his father's herd of grassfed cows into something more productive. Students from the University of Trondheim have embraced the Norwegian cabin tradition and have built/rehabbed a network of 23 small cabins available to students interested in overnighting in isolated nature.
The group- NTNUI (NTNU sportsklubb)- began in the 1940’s when a former Trondheim student was killed in WWII. His parents donated money and helped build the first cabin named Nicokoia after their son Nicolay.
Today, the student group has built or renovated nearly two dozen “koiene” (huts). All are off-grid, many are only accessible by hiking, or cross-country skiing, several hours. They are all equipped with a working kitchen (a propane or kerosene stove) though the toilet is an outhouse and a local stream serves for drinking water and bathing.
We visited the group’s newest acquisition, Vekvessætra, a nearly 200-year-old farmhouse which they leased from the local authorities and renovated in “the great Norwegian tradition of ‘dugnads’” (volunteer work). Eighteen students spent about two weeks rehabbing the old log cabin, replacing floors, windows, insulation and even installing a new sod roof.
Sivert Eliassen and Siri Hårklau hosted us in what was once a summer farmhouse for local farmers (the area is still grazed by local sheep).

While that's all well and good, what I find most interesting — aside from those falcon doors, of course — is the number of screens inside the cabin ...
