Something a little different this week. We are prepping for winter which means firewood is high on the priority list. Along with firewood having a good supply of kindling is a must.
This year I decided to break out a tool I bought many years ago and many may not have seen before, our froe. It also goes by frow or shake axe and is traditionally used to make cedar shakes for roofing or split rail fences.
Here's a link to the froe I purchased from Lehmans : https://www.lehmans.com/p-686-lehmans-own-old-fashioned-froe.aspx?show=all
I shot this video a couple of weeks ago. I got a nice five point buck opening day which I have already butchered and put in the freezer.
I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving with family and friends.

A short video on carving a rough and ready replacement froe handle for my Ray Iles Premium Froe.
The original handle is starting to develop a small crack and although it isnt yet affecting its use i wanted to see how easy it would be to make a replacement on the go.
I used an axe, draw knife, saw and knife in my workshop but this would be easily manageable in the field with my cutting tool trio or even just a knife if necessary.
The wood is birch and as such I have compensated for the softer wood by shortening the handle slightly.
