Typically a few micrometers in length, bacteria come in all sorts of shapes ranging from sphere, rods, and spirals. Bacteria were also among the first life forms to appear on Earth and can be found pretty much everywhere (literally everywhere). They inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, even radioactive waste. Here’s something for you to think about. There are approximately 5×10^30 bacteria on Earth and are vital in recycling nutrients. In fact, did you know that bacteria are critically important to our lives? Actually, you wouldn’t even be alive if it weren’t for bacteria since they are responsible for a host of beneficial attributes such as strengthening our immune system, improving our skin’s function, improving our bowel regularity, even protecting our DNA! However, they can also be the cause of catastrophic effects such as infectious diseases that include cholera, syphilis, anthrax, leprosy, and tuberculosis (which is responsible for killing about 2 million people per year). And get this, there are approximately ten times as many bacterial cells in the human flora as there are human cells in the body (YIKES!). It's the flesh eating bacteria, and here's what you need to know to survive. Today's topic was requested by Keepin It Karl. Flesh eating bacteria is more formally known as Necrotizing fasciitis. It's caused by these bacteria listed here entering the body through cuts, insect bites, eating undercooked contaminated meats or seafoods, or sharing dirty needles. Once it takes hold, it rapidly destroys your skin, muscle, and fat tissue. Where is it located? The flesh eating disease can be found everywhere throughout the world, since it's caused by harmful bacteria infecting your skin and subcutaneous tissue primarily through food and open wounds. There are about 600-700 cases in the U.S. every year with about 25%-30% resulting in death. How will it kill you? Symptoms of Necrotizing fasciitis begin with intense pain at the site of trauma, which becomes inflamed, swollen, and discolored. The infection then quickly progresses within hours as the bacteria destroys the skin and muscle tissue by releasing toxins (Streptococcal pyogenic exotoxins) that ultimately lead to death. Mortality rates have been reported to be as high as 73% if the flesh eating bacteria is left untreated. How to survive: Early diagnosis and treatment are absolutely necessary upon infection in order to determine the right antibiotics to take. Those suffering from an aggressive infection MUST have the infected tissue surgically removed in order to keep the flesh eating bacteria from spreading. In some cases, amputation may be required. Repeat and follow-up surgeries are also typically necessary in order to remove additional necrotic tissue as well as skin grafting to close the large, open wounds the infection may have caused. When you think of bacteria, you might think of the flu, your kindergartner, or the TV remote, but you probably don’t think of oxygen. Get this: Bacteria provide oxygen for about one in five of your breaths. Without these microbes, you, your family, and most importantly the TV remote wouldn’t exist! These minuscule ocean-dwelling oxygen makers are Prochlorococcus (try saying that three times fast). These little guys are special because they contain chlorophyll, the compound that allows for photosynthesis. For those of you who didn’t pay attention in science class, photosynthesis is a process that converts light energy from the sun into fuel for an organism. A by-product of this activity is oxygen. Prochlorococcus is believed to be the most abundant photosynthetic creature on the planet and may provide as much as 20 percent of the oxygen you breathe. In this week’s "Today I Learned," oceanographer and Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle introduces us to these microscopic bacteria.

MRSA was first discovered in 1961 and since then can be found everywhere from hospitals and nursing homes to daycares, military bases, and prisons. It most commonly affects those with weak immune systems such as children and the elderly, where it thrives in hotspots like your nose and underarms. The first American case appeared in 1968. How will it kill you? MRSA infections occur from direct contact with an infected person or object, such as razors, towels, and sports equipment. The bacteria attaches to your skin then enters your bloodstream via wounds on your skin, lung inhalation, and even the urinary tract. Infection initially begins with a painful red swelling on the skin called cysts, then progresses to breathing difficulties, fever, and the chills. Death occurs when these conditions are left untreated. How to survive: The most effective method of reducing your risk of infection is through proper hygiene. This includes washing your hands with soap and water, regular showers after exercising, and keeping your wounds clean with bandages and ointments. Infections can usually be treated with strong antibiotics. But MRSA is constantly adapting and building its resistance to these treatments, so hospitals and researchers are continually developing new medicines to keep up with its ever-changing state.
