American Civil Religion?
Based on the research of sociologist Robert Bellah and others, this 20 minute video poses two questions: (1) Is Bellah correct when he asserts there is a civil religion in America that exists alongside our major religious institutions? If so, what does it look like? And (2) If an American civil religion exists, does it pose a threat to the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam)?

Based on the research of sociologist Robert Bellah and others, this 20 minute video poses two questions: (1) Is Bellah correct when he asserts there is a civil religion in America that exists alongside our major religious institutions? If so, what does it look like? And (2) If an American civil religion exists, does it pose a threat to the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam)? From their perspective, is it a form of idolatry? Produced as a element for a world religions class, this video might also be useful in a religion class discussing the meaning and forms of idolatry, and in sociology, civics and American history classes. The video is not intended to provide definitive answers, but to spark discussion.

http://www.fvcforum.com/ | Fox Valley Conservative Forum | From the very beginning of the American nation, political leaders have used religious rhetoric and biblical imagery when facing conflict, commemorating historical events, or proposing new national initiatives. Even our founding document, The Declaration of Independence, refers to “Nature’s God”, “the Supreme Judge of the world”, and so on.
At best, such language reminds us of the distinction between God and the State and his authority over all of his creation. But what if the State employs the language of scripture for its own purposes? Should Christians cheer when politicians watered-down or misapply scripture in order to garner political support for secular ends? At what point does such language wrongly elevate the State’s programs and wars into messianic-sounding missions?
On Tuesday, July 1, Pastor Ken Griesbach will challenge your thinking on proper patriotism with a presentation on Civil Religion. Learn how the State has flattered Christians, and Christians have imbibed, resulting in a usurped Christ and an exalted State.
Bio Sketch: Ken is a long-time student of the history of religious liberty and is Pastor of Victory Baptist Church in Appleton.
