The xx are an English indie pop band, formed in London in 2008. The group released their debut album, xx in August 2009. The album ranked highly on many best of 2009 lists, placing number one on the list compiled by The Guardian and second for NME. In 2010, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for their debut album.
They are currently working on their second album, Coexist, which is to be released in 2012.
The band met while studying at Elliott School, the same school that produced Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet. The group, however, have downplayed the influence of the school on their career: "A teacher from Elliott who had never even taught us said how great we were. It's a bit annoying. We were left alone, more than anything - although I'm sure that helped us in its own way." Oliver Sim and Romy Madley-Croft started the band as a duo when they were 15. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined once they began performing in 2005, with Jamie Smith joining a year after.
The group's debut album, xx, was met with sweeping critical praise, achieving a rating of "Universal acclaim" on Metacritic. The album also ranked well on "best of the year" lists, placing ninth on the Rolling Stone list and second for NME. In the 2009 NME The Future 50 list, The xx were positioned at number six, and in October 2009, they were named one of MTV Iggy's "Top 10 Bands with Buzz" (at the CMJ Music Marathon 2009).

Other Music & Dig For FIre join forces every year to book and incredible line up and host the best free daytime party at SXSW by a mile. On the lawns of the French Legation, 802 San Marcos, you can almost forget the hot mess of 6th Street with music rolling from one stage to the next throughout the day. The xx played their first show of South By at our party last year and it truly was a turn out for the books. We couldn't contain the crowd who, when the gates closed, simply jumped the wall to catch this performance. You can see why from the video. The xx played their first show of South By at our party last year and it truly was a turn out for the books. We couldn't contain the crowd who, when the gates closed, simply jumped the wall to catch this performance. You can see why from the video. Truly an awesome moment that will be forever burnt into our memories.

London Grammar last night performed at Kendal Calling on the Gigwise Calling Out stage - and the band described it as one of their best ever shows. We were there, and tend to agree. The band release their debut album, If You Wait, on 9 September 2013, and it is one of the year's most anticipated debuts. It will also hopefully shake off the comparisons to The xx that have followed London Grammar since day one. London Grammar last night performed at Kendal Calling on the Gigwise Calling Out stage - and the band described it as one of their best ever shows. We were there, and tend to agree.
The band release their debut album, If You Wait, on 9 September 2013, and it is one of the year's most anticipated debuts. It will also hopefully shake off the comparisons to The xx that have followed London Grammar since day one.
"We still get those all the time," says singer Hannah Reid, speaking to Gigwise immediately after their Kendal Calling performance.
Guitarist Dan Rothman has never had an issue with the comparisons however, safe in the knowledge that the release of their debut album would establish the band in their own right. "We weren't ever worried about being compared to The xx, because with the new songs, the comparisons have become less and less. It's good though," he says.

Papa Wemba, a musician known around the world as the king of Congolese rumba, has died following a collapse on stage during a concert, officials said ... Culture Minister Baudouin Banza Mukalay confirmed the musician’s death on Sunday, calling it a “great loss for the country and all of Africa.” ... The cause of death wasn’t immediately known....

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo faces six mostly unknown opponents, with most of the opposition boycotting the poll ... Critics accuse the 73-year-old of failing to distribute the country's oil wealth to the population of about 700,000 ... In the last election in 2009, Obiang won 97 percent of the vote....

On the streets, there are rumours. At shops, people murmur to each other that there is a plague of earthquakes going around the world. Some are convinced that the quake is coming back to Nepal. "None of the tailors are back," says the local seamstress, explaining that her staff have left the city. "They're waiting for Baishakh 12," the Nepali date when the devastating quake shook Nepal last year ... The story I wish I never had to tell....

Barack Obama has described Prince George as "adorable" after the 2-year-old son of Prince William and Kate Middleton was allowed to stay up past his bed-time to meet the US President. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted Obama and wife Michelle for an informal dinner at Kensington Palace in London last night, after which photographs were released of the guests kneeling down to shake hands with the young prince in his pyjamas....
