Michelle Obama, the first African-American First Lady of the
United States and wife of
Barack Obama, was born
Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on
17th January 1964 in
Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of
Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee as well as a
Democratic precinct captain and
Marian, a secretary at
Spiegel's catalog store. A
Protestant Christian, she grew up on
Euclid Street in the
South Shore community area of
Chicago and describes her house or family as a “conventional” home with “the mother at home, the father works, you have dinner around the table”.
Mrs. Obama did her schooling from Chicago's first magnet high school,
Whitney Young High School, where she was a classmate of
Jesse Jackson's daughter Santita. By
1981, she graduated as the salutatorian of her class. Watching her brother graduate from
Princeton University in
1983,
Michelle herself wanted to pursue her degree from the
University and she challenged the teaching methodology for French for she felt that it should be more conversational. She also wrote a thesis titled Princeton-Educated
Blacks and the
Black Community.
Michelle Obama met the
President of the United States, Barack Obama, when they were among the
African Americans at their law firm,
Sidley Austin. She was assigned as a mentor to him for a summer associate and they came into a relationship during a business lunch followed by a community organization meeting where he first impressed her. The couple married in
October 1992 and together have two daughters,
Malia Ann and
Natasha. In
1991,
Obama held public sector positions in the Chicago city government as an
Assistant to the Mayor as well as an
Assistant Commissioner of Planning and
Development. By
1993, she was promoted as the
Executive Director for the Chicago
Office of
Public Allies, a non-profit organization encouraging young people to work on social issues in nonprofit groups and government agencies.
Her role as the First Lady of the United States has been tremendous and very successful. She started by visiting homeless shelters and soup kitchens along with sending representatives to schools and advocated public service. In May 2014, Michelle joined a campaign to bring back school girls who were kidnapped in
Nigeria and tweeted a picture of herself holding a poster with the #bringbackourgirls campaign hashtag. Other campaigns of Obama include “
Let's Move!,” focusing on childhood obesity and
LGBT rights.
