One Bari to Rule Them All: the Conn 12M Transitional baritone saxophone, sometimes called the "Gerry Mulligan Model" because he played an early Transitional #226xxx. This one is serial #250xxx, has rolled tone holes, same-side bell keys, nail-file G#, etc. It's easier to get around on than many ALTOS I've played. Pitch is a bit unstable up high, and ergonomics take a bit to get used to, but it's all manageable. From big & bold to mellow & rich, you can hear why this is the most desirable model of all vintage bari saxes.

Conn 22B SN# 280090 Brushed Silver with gold wash bell. They just don't make them like this anymore. Made in a small bore, the New York Symphony trumpet has a very bright, crystal pure tone. It is brilliant without being "squealy" or "squeaky"; it has great penetrating power without being blatant; it will play pianissimo without faltering or losing its trumpet color; it will play fortissimo without cracking or becoming harsh; it responds with the slightest breath and can be played vigorously all evening without exhaustion. The unparalleled favorite in theater orchestras, dance orchestras, the smaller symphonies and concert bands, and for solo playing
Most Early model 22B's you will find are silver plated. The finish of an instrument (gold, silver, raw brass or lacquer) is not an indication of a particular model. It has been found that 22B's from 1924-1925 often had solid copper valve casings with brass threads soldered in. Notice the its lack of a right hand pinky ring. That isn't damage; it's supposed to be that way. Not uncommon in the 20's. Over the years the 22B evolved into the instruments listed seperately as the 22B New York Symphony "Late model" and eventually the 22B Victor. It gained a leadpipe pinky ring around 1928, and a main tuning slide brace around 1936. Instruments up to at least 1930 had top spring valves. Sometime around that date the valves became bottom spring.
The 22B New York Symphony "early model" is 19½" long, weighs 2¼ lbs and has a 4 5/8" bell. It has a #1 bore (0.438") and was built between 1922 and approximately 1935.
Quick change to the key of "A" mechanism this horn is a collectors dream. Comes with original case, mute, and mouthpiece

Conn. Learns of JFK Assass. on WTIC & NBC Radio (with Timeline of Events)

Breaking news of an assassination attempt on President Kennedy interrupts the casual conversation of the call-in program "Mikeline" on WTIC Radio in Hartford, Connecticut. For the next sixteen minutes, announcers Floyd Richards, Bob Ellsworth, and Dick Bertel as well as studio engineers, the news staff, and other support personnel will manage the story locally until NBC News offers continuous coverage to WTIC and its other radio affiliates nationwide.
Floyd Richards (1920 - 2011) is perhaps best remembered as the host of "The Hap Richards Show," a children's program on Channel 3 in Hartford when it was WTIC-TV. Like all WTIC personalities of the era, however, Richards was a utility player for both television and radio. Joining the staff in 1944, he anchored newscasts for legendary morning radio man Bob Steele, hosted "Sports Final," added color commentary to live play-by-play of UConn Huskies football and basketball games, and led Channel 3's coverage of the annual Greater Hartford Open golf tournament at the Wethersfield Country Club. He left WTIC after 34 years of service.
Bob Ellsworth (1925 - 2009), who earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in the Pacific during World War II, joined WTIC in 1956 and anchored the weekday 11:00 p.m. newscast from the date Channel 3 went on the air in 1957 until he left the stations in 1968. Writing for WTICalumni.com, he recalled decades later what it was like to lurch into this breaking news coverage: "Dick O'Brien came into our studio from the newsroom. He handed me a bulletin as he stared intently into my face before releasing it as if to remind me to look at it and understand the content thoroughly. I looked and was properly taken aback. I then signaled Floyd that I needed to interrupt him. He caught on quickly and I gave the bulletin. At that point, I gave it back to Floyd and [caller Ros Fichman]. By this time, she had the wind knocked out of her sails and she hesitated and said she would rather not continue with details of her cake recipe at this time. So, we said a few words and further information prompted us to turn the proceedings over to the NBC Network as everything was collapsing around the tragic event." (While Floyd Richards speaks to another caller about pruning maple trees, a sound like a finger emphatically thumping the studio desk can be heard. Perhaps this is Dick O'Brien communicating the importance of the bulletin to Bob Ellsworth.)
Dick Bertel, who was a radio and TV personality on WTIC from 1956 to 1977 and has been retired from broadcasting since 2006, recounted his experience in a memoir written for his family: "I was editing tape in studio 'C' for my upcoming 'Americana' broadcast when I noticed the door to the newsroom close suddenly. Moments later, one of the newsmen ran into the studio carrying a bulletin in his hand and handed it to Bob Ellsworth. 'There is a report,' he began, 'that President Kennedy has been shot in Dallas.' [Bob and Floyd] limped along after that, not knowing what to say and hoping the network would come to their rescue. At 2:05 p.m. I hit the air, ad-libing as best I could without a whole lot of information. Suddenly, the control room signaled me to go to the network and there we stayed for the next three days. After that, we broke away from NBC Radio only for our major local newscasts.
"The next morning, Saturday, I was scheduled to do the 6:50 a.m. news. The writer wanted to close with a funny story about a horse. I told him, 'no kicker stories.' This was not a time for levity. Fortunately, I prevailed.
"As I read the 8 o'clock newscast, which was 15-minutes in length, the eyes of Bob Ellsworth, who introduced me and sat across the table from me, were filled with tears. I managed to hold together until the last story which described Jacqueline removing the wedding ring from the president's hand and kissing it. My voice choked.
"It was okay. We were all feeling the pain. Two days later, as he described the caisson's arrival at Arlington National Cemetery, Russ Ward, a veteran NBC newsman, began to sob. That was okay too."
Later in his career, Bertel would himself anchor hourly newscasts and breaking news reports for NBC Radio ---most notably the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988 and milestone events throughout the 1990 - 1991 Persian Gulf War--- many of which were carried by WTIC (AM). He is first heard in this recording announcing live the 2:00 p.m. legal station identification.
The legal ID is followed by the dot-dot-dot-dash Morse code signal for the letter "V." Without fail, WTIC (AM) has broadcast this sounder, which is performed in the signature notes of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, every hour on the hour since 1943. It represents the "V for Victory" slogan that was popularized among the Allies during World War II. (The BBC used a similar symphonic sounder from 1941 to 1945.)
wn.com/Conn. Learns Of Jfk Assass. On Wtic Nbc Radio (With Timeline Of Events)

In this electrifying sitcom-length installment of his Repairman's Overview series, saxopjhone repairman Matt Stohrer of http://www.StohrerMusic.com gets passionate and maybe a little choked up towards the end talking about the unique and beautiful and delicate and amazing saxophone that is the Conn Connqueror, otherwise known as the 30M tenor and the 26M alto.
Since these horns are based on the body tube of the Conn 10M and 6M respectively, Matt mostly talks about what makes these *different* from the 10M and 6M, so you should go watch the video "Repairman's Overview: Conn 10M Tenor Saxophone" first to get the scoop on the basics of the construction and body tube, and also the video "Saxophone Repair Topic: Conn Pivot Screw Lock Screws" for the down and dirty on the teensy-weensy little lock screws that make up a major portion of working on a Connqueror. So yeah, just like, a whole hour of talking about Conn saxophones. Sound like you idea of fun? Then you and Matt would get along!

DON BAKER at the all tube CONN 640 Electronic Theater Organ . LISTEN AND LEARN... Vacuum tube organs are priceless musical instruments that cannot be accurately imitated using digital electronics. What this means is that we are now faced with an ever decreasing supply of these organs if we want to get 'THAT SOUND'. BTW Listening in person to these great vintage organs is where it's at. That's when you hear what makes them special. Although a good pair of headphones can get you there too at least a little bit. Okay okay, so many pipe purists do not care for electronic organs, that's okay, but PLEASE if you are a pipe purist then keep your criticisms regarding the analog electronic and electromechanical organs away from your computer keyboard. These organs are disappearing one by one everyday by people who are clueless as to what they are capable of musically. They are being dismantled by fools who are content on turning out $108 as parts when if they were a little bit patient they could get twice that from a person locally who would come get the organ to PLAY IT! Every day these great organs are being busted apart to take the tube amplifier from them so that a mediocre guitar amp can be made. There are PLENTY of guitar amps already! There are plenty of spare 'amp parts', and in fact there are PLENTY of spare organ parts. DON'T destroy an organ for these reasons, PLEASE!
Plain and simple, electrons are very very small, but it doesn't mean that because of this we can just pretend these electrons have some sort of a 'sound foot print' that can be 'duplicated' using digital technology. No, in fact I have been preaching for years that digital has been going about things all wrong when it comes to analog electronics emulation. Fortunately for the cause nobody listened because we really have been given lots of toys to play with. Plus looking back I realize that for the direction I wanted digital to take we needed to progress a little further in MICRO ELECTRO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING SYSTEMS ( or MEMS ). The completely new breakout science that awaits is what I am terming-
MICRO ELECTRO MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS ( or MEMMIS ). Using DIGITAL where it works best, and analog where it works best, we can finally unite the two sciences to create all new systems. Since the Hammond Tone Wheel Organ was the first, and the best MACRO electro mechanical organ, it is time to use digital to explore the VERY PRACTICAL AND VERY ACCURATE, TRUE TO FORM, MICRO ELECTROMAGNETIC ELECTRO MECHANICAL SYSTEMS.
Okay, if you are wondering what the heck I am talking about, it's simple- when every Hammond Tone Wheel Organ 'Clone' came along, they left out MAGNETISM. So why should this matter? Because the HAMMOND tone wheel IS magnetic. The HAMMOND tone wheel is ALTERNATING CURRENT. The HAMMOND tone wheel is a GENERATOR completely unlike ANY Hartley Oscillator or it's derivatives in it's behavior. And I don't know about you, but I can hear the difference between a real Hammond and a clone. So is it 'too little to matter', as so many organists say? Well...that is a bad attitude to take guys. Imagine someone saying that to Stradivarius or Steinway. Or Hammond;)
PRESERVE ANALOG ELECTRONIC ORGANS. OUR GRAND KIDS AND GREAT GREAT GRAND KIDS WILL PLAY THESE ORGANS. IN 20 YEARS THEY WILL BE A COLLECTORS ITEM...JUST BECAUSE EVERYTHING ENDS UP IN THAT REALM WHEN THERE ARE FEW EXAMPLES LEFT. EVEN THE EDSEL! So don't let it happen to the electronic organ 1929-1979.
Yes, that's FIFTY, count'em 50 YEARS! the best organs were made from 1955-1968. These are the tube years for organs, but also great years for transistor electronic organs. Transistors are very much right at home in the electronic organ tone generator. Do watch and listen to the Conn model 642 transistorized organ on the DICK DELANEY CHANNEL and compare the vacuum tube Conn sound to the transistor Conn sound. They are both great!

So many of these great Conn organs sit not played . Better than digital by far! Paul Mickelson proves it on this record. Currently the one pictured around the start in this video is for sale in Dayton on Columbus Ohio Clist for peanuts! This is not the reason for the video, I love to play the organ and want to share the great artists and their recordings of the best organs that money can buy- the ANALOG ELECTRONIC ORGAN. Save one today! Easy to repair and will last several generations with simple electrolytic capacitor changes every 25-35 years. The tone generation is pure, the electrons come alive! Digital organs are like mankind trying to create life...only an imitation, but I'd say in another 10 years they just might get it- making digital just as tempermentally beautiful as analog that is. At least with Miditzer and Hauptwerk we can keep up on the progress for little to no monetary investment, but hey' these real vintage, and REAL analog organs are also little to nothing these days, plus they look better! Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, get a soldering iron, turn on your left brain for a minute and look up how to do simple repairs on these treasures. Conn organs are among the best if not THE best. I have many organs of many makes- Wurlitzer, Hammond,Thomas, Gulbranen, and 2 Conn models now- a 1957 model 406, and a 1968 model 543. The 406 is a small spinet and is a tube individual oscillator organ like what Paul Mickelson is playing on this recording except Paul is playing a full size console organ and my little 406 is even smaller than the average spinet organ with it's 36 keys instead of the standard 42 keys per manual. The console organs have 61 keys on two manuals and 25 or 32 pedals. A bonafide classical organ at AGO specs will have 32 pedals. Paul Mickelson is playing a Conn Classic model 800 to 821... the 825's were transistorized. It is very hard to beat a Conn Classic for classical and a Conn tube model 645 for Theater. In fact listen to Don Baker 'Rise n' Shine' and 'Curtain Time' to compare the classical with the theater. Also listen to 'John Gart Conn organ Marches' to hear yet another great Conn tube organ. Get you one from 55' to 65' and clean the contacts and she'll play just fine. Oh' and be sure you adjust the contacts for the tabs. Often an organ that sounds in horrible repair can be brought back to like new just by cleaning the key and tab contacts.-Paul

MP3 & SHOW NOTES: http://themindrenewed.com/interviews/2015/738-ep090 This week we welcome to the programme David Conn of TruthSleuth.net for an in-depth discussion on the so-called Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ and its manipulative founder Jim Jones, under whose "leadership" over nine hundred people were killed in a mass "suicide/murder" on the 18th of November 1978 in northwestern Guyana.
David Conn, who investigated Jones for eight years prior to the Jonestown Massacre, shares with us his own story of how he tried to expose and warn people about Jim Jones, and helps us to form some kind of understanding of the charismatic-yet-dangerous Jones and the psychological, spiritual and social factors that allowed such a man to rise to a position of power and influence.
