Uppalapu Srinivas (Telugu: ఉప్పలపు శ్రీనివాస్; 28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was an Indian mandolin player and composer of the Carnatic musical tradition of Southern India. A child prodigy, he made his debut in 1978, and came to be popularly known as Mandolin Srinivas. Over the next four decades, he toured across the world, and collaborated with ohn McLaughlin,Michael Nyman, and Michael Brook.
Srinivas was born 28 February 1969, in Palakol in Andhra Pradesh. At the age of six he picked up his father U. Satyanarayana's mandolin, after he heard it played at a concert he attended with his father. Upon realising the talent of his son, his father who had studied classical music, bought him a new mandolin, and started teaching him.He started with the acoustic mandolin, though later he switched to the electric mandolin as he felt it allowed making long notes clearly audible.
He was the first musician to use electric mandolin in Carnatic music, he even modified a difficult electric western instrument, using five strings instead of traditional eight, to suit the Carnatic pitch, raga system, and especially gamakas, and nuanced oscillations.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 by Government of India, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2009. He was a follower and devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and he had performed before him on several occasions.

A mandolin (Italian: mandolino) is a musical instrument in the lute family (plucked, or strummed). It descends from the mandore, a soprano member of the lute family. The mandolin soundboard (the top) comes in many shapes—but generally round or teardrop-shaped, sometimes with scrolls or other projections. A mandolin may have f-holes, or a single round or oval sound hole. A round or oval sound hole may be bordered with decorative rosettes or purfling.
Early mandolins had six double courses of gut strings, tuned similarly to lutes, and plucked with the fingertips. Modern mandolins—which originated in Naples, Italy in the late 18th century—commonly have four double courses (four pairs) of metal strings, which are plucked with a plectrum.
Many variants of the mandolin have existed. These include Milanese, Lombard, Brescian and other six-course types, as well as four-string (one string per course), twelve-string (three strings per course), and sixteen-string (four strings per course).
A mandolin typically has a hollow wooden body with a tailpiece that holds one end of the strings, a floating bridge, a neck with a flat (or slight radius) fretted fingerboard, a nut, and mechanical tuning machines to accommodate metal strings.

Uppalapu Srinivas (Telugu: ఉప్పలపు శ్రీనివాస్; 28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was an Indian mandolin player and composer of the Carnatic musical tradition of Southern India. A child prodigy, he made his debut in 1978, and came to be popularly known as Mandolin Srinivas. Over the next four decades, he toured across the world, and collaborated with ohn McLaughlin,Michael Nyman, and Michael Brook. Srinivas was born 28 February 1969, in Palakol in Andhra Pradesh. "If you play the mandolin for 30 years, you play in tune for 15 and out of tune for 15." This is true and tuning a mandolin can be quite difficult. Mike Marshall helps you out! There are two notes for every one, 2 E's, 2 A's, 2 D's, and 2 G's. The strings are the same as the violin, but because there is two of each, it gets twice as hard. Mike Marshal recommends using an electric tuner, but noting that flaws exist in electric tuners. The first step is to tune the A, the second string. Uppalapu Srinivas (Telugu: ఉప్పలపు శ్రీనివాస్; 28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was an Indian mandolin player and composer of the Carnatic musical tradition of Southern India. A child prodigy, he made his debut in 1978, and came to be popularly known as Mandolin Srinivas. Over the next four decades, he toured across the world, and collaborated with ohn McLaughlin,Michael Nyman, and Michael Brook.
Srinivas was born 28 February 1969, in Palakol in Andhra Pradesh. At the age of six he picked up his father U. Satyanarayana's mandolin, after he heard it played at a concert he attended with his father. Upon realising the talent of his son, his father who had studied classical music, bought him a new mandolin, and started teaching him.He started with the acoustic mandolin, though later he switched to the electric mandolin as he felt it allowed making long notes clearly audible.

This Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Snow is dedicated to my lifelong best friend David Coover who died on January 13th 2014. The Chili Peppers' where one of his favorite bands. He always liked my other Chili Peppers' covers and told me to cover them more often, so I chose to cover 'Snow' in memory of him.
I borrowed my girlfriend's mandolin and learned how to play this song over the last month. Mandolin and bass compliment each other well, I think. I'm playing on D'Addario Kaplan Heavy Tension strings here - I think they sound really rich.
Also, I should thank Ari Kaplan for helping me shoot video!

"If you play the mandolin for 30 years, you play in tune for 15 and out of tune for 15." This is true and tuning a mandolin can be quite difficult. Mike Marshall helps you out! There are two notes for every one, 2 E's, 2 A's, 2 D's, and 2 G's. The strings are the same as the violin, but because there is two of each, it gets twice as hard.
Mike Marshal recommends using an electric tuner, but noting that flaws exist in electric tuners. The first step is to tune the A, the second string. When you are turning the pegs, try to tune up so that the tension in the string is not caught in the wrong places, causing it to release when you're playing and make the instrument go out of tune.
Tuning with an electric tuner is pretty simple...if you only have one string. In mandolins, it's often difficult to discern which one of the two strings is out of tune. To fix this, Mike Marshall figured out the "rest stroke". He plucks the string with a pick and he lets the pick rest on the lower of the two strings, effectively isolating one string from the other.

There are a TON of guitar videos, but not much for the mandolin. Here's my contribution to the cause. It's a fun song that is easily adapted to the mandolin and is fun to play.
