Model Railroad, Southern Pacific's Natron Cutoff on the Oregon & California Railway
Bill Baker's freelanced Oregon & California Railway models the Southern Pacific's Natron Cutoff through the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. In Bill's world, the O&C; owns the line and leases it to the SP. You will see mostly SP steam locomotives along with a few diesels. You will also see a few Spokane, Portland & Seattle locomotives, as the railroad has trackage rights on the O&C;'s line. Bill's feature is a bit different than our usual tours, as it is a work in progress and shares many behind-the-scenes building ideas. The feature includes photographs, an article (which tells the story of the freelanced railroad as well as building and wiring ideas), and video. Some of the video in the Premium Edition is 360 degree.

The sawmill was located on the Kansas City, Pittsburg & Gulf Railroad, that is now the Kansas City Southern, and the village was named Pickering. Nevada and Oregon Railroad
The Nevada and Oregon Railroad was an American, 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railroad that operated from Reno, Nevada, then northwest to the California state line near present-day Hallelujah Junction before reaching Oneida, California in 1882. A portion of the route is part of today's Union Pacific Railroad branch connecting their Feather River mainline with Reno. The Nevada and Oregon was incorporated on June 5, 1880, and was headquartered at Reno. It was sold to the Moran Brothers, a group of New York investors, at foreclosure in 1884 and operated unofficially as the Nevada and California Railroad. In 1893 the Moran Brothers sold the railroad and it was reorganized as the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway.

By 1904 the Louisiana Central Railroad had 75 miles of lines and 12 engines running at Neame, Hornbeck, Barham, Pickering, and Cravens. In 1905 the Pickering Land and Timber Company was incorporated. Additional tracts of land were added and a second sawmill erected. The sawmill town was named Barham in honor of the secretary T.M. Barham. In 1905 41,000-acres of Wright-Blodgett Lumber Company (from Illinois) land was acquired 20 miles southeast of Pickering, on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, and a third mill erected, with the village being named Cravens.
The Sabine Valley Timber and Lumber Company was incorporated in 1909 for a period of 25 years operating mainly in Shelby County, Sabine County, and San Augustine County, Texas. Other businesses were located in Modoc County and Siskiyou County, this vintage film focuses on the rough and mountainous logging railroads quickly constructed to remove timber from the surrounding forests.
About the Director:
Chadwell O'Connor (October 9, 1914 – September 5, 2007) was an American inventor and steam engine enthusiast. He is most remembered as the inventor of an improved fluid-damped tripod head, for which he won
Academy Awards in 1975 and 1992.
Key Locomotive Featured:
The Shay locomotive is a geared steam locomotive that originated and was primarily used in North America. The locomotives were built to the patents of Ephraim Shay, who has been credited with the popularization of the concept of a geared steam locomotive. Although the design of Ephraim Shay's early locomotives differed from later ones, there is a clear line of development that joins all Shays. Shay locomotives were especially suited to logging, mining and industrial operations and could operate successfully on steep or poor quality track. Approximately 2,770 Shay locomotives were built by Lima in four classes, from 6 to 160 short tons (5.4 to 142.9 long tons; 5.4 to 145.1 t), between 1878 and 1945.

The layout main line is 1,353 feet or 20.5 scale miles with over 80 scale miles on the layout. Running at a scale speed of 20mph it takes over 1 hour to run the length of the mainline, but often the engineers are stopped by the 150 track side signals controlled by the dispatcher using a real CTC dispatcher’s panel along with radio communications to each train’s engineer. This all means that the layout operates like a real railroad. Over 150 various powered locomotives can be seen pulling a variety of over 2,500 freight and passenger cars. Some engineers spend their time moving and switching cars in one of the many switching yards rather than the long trip on the mainline. Behind the scenes is the massive staging yard under train layout. A computer can also run 9 trains on the layout.
During the over 1 hour train trip, the trains pass 16,000 fir trees, 8,000 deciduous trees and 4,000 aspen trees all hand made. On 1 mountain side, a crew of fire fighters is found fighting a forest fire with smoke coming from the blazes. Often the trains disappear and come out somewhere else in 1 of the 12 tunnels and cross 15 bridges while on the mainline. There is a multitude of various buildings creating the real towns on the layout. With endless people, animals, cars and simulated activities going on everywhere on the layout, it’s nearly impossible to see them all even after I spent 6 hours looking around and will surely require a return trip. City fire fighters work on a building fire in town as well.
