Description

Check out the Gratical at a local dealer.

The Gratical HD Micro OLED electronic viewfinder uses an extremely powerful FPGA dual core processor and the latest Micro-OLED displays to provide a hugely expanded contrast range. Our Micro-OLED display supports high pixel density with unparalleled resolution, true blacks, gamma and contrast range. The Gratical HD has 5.4 million pixels on a 0.61” diagonal screen no bigger than the size of your thumbnail.

The Gratical HD includes two HDMI and two SDI ports with cross conversion from HDMI to SDI. Weather resistant covers prevent moisture or debris from getting in open ports.

You’ll be amazed with how sharp the image is. The internal field of view is just the right size so that the image is large, but not so that your eye has to roam to see the entire image at once. It features a built in -1 to +4 diopter range and Zacuto’s latest anti-fog coating formula. An auto-closing eyecup door prevents sunburn display automatically without any action by the operator.

Mount the Gratical HD to your Next Generation Recoil via the 1/4 20 rosette on the side with an Axis Mini. You can also mount the Gratical HD with the ¼ 20 screw hole in the bottom. Included is the LP-E6 style battery with charger and universal plug adapters.

Using it all the time
I am finding that I use the Gratical to view scenes both indoors and outdoors. It is amazing. I find I don't use the monitor hardly at all. Outdoors the ability to clearly see.

I find the size of the image to be perfect. I don't need to scan across the image. I can see what I am capturing in one glance. I don't seem to be able to do this with a monitor.

As for the size of the image inside the gratical, I thought it would be too small. I was wrong. It works incredible well.

This will be my viewing solution for the foreseeable future.

Instant Improvement
I will first say that I am not one to use viewfinders. Before using the Gratical HD I thought they were cumbersome and not part of a streamlined rig. I always have an a external monitor and this used to be enough for me. The Gratical HD may have changed me forever and I don't see a need for anything else in the market.

1. Filming outside in broad day light often makes it extremely hard to to your EVF or monitor. Having the Gratical is now a must for me in this situation. The improvement that I was able to get on focus and exposure on all of my shots was ten fold and turned my end product into ma much more consistent piece.

2. The image inside the Gratical HD is so crisp that by the end of my first shoot I was using it 90% of the time to achieve my shot, the colors are perfect and the eye cup is very comfortable.

3. Though simple, my favorite part of the Gratical the entire time of the shoot was its easy ergonomics and a simple on/off button. I have used others that can be kind of a pain.

Overall, amazing piece of equipment that Zacuto knocked out of the park.

Best Viewfinder Ever Made
This EVF is the best out there, period. Not only is the image quality, contrast & sharpness excellent, but all the features are everything you could want in a viewing device! False color, waveform, multiple peaking modes, HDMI & HD SDI passthrough, and thorough menu options!

I like it even better than the Alexa EVF!

Almost Perfect!
Let me start by saying that I upgraded from the Zacuto EVF Pro. This unit is light years ahead of it.

I love the crisp image and the scopes that remain on display at all times.

There is a strange color shift that occurs with the slightest angle change when looking through the viewfinder, which can be a little annoying. You get used to it after time.

The preset LUT for the FS7 to REC709 is much more contrasty and saturated than the one the FS7 feeds to the EVF. I'll need to go in and make my own LUT so I can get an accurate representation (this is necessary in S&Q mode). That being said, the ability to have LUTs is incredible and a must have for use with many cameras on the market.

I got mine as a part of a Recoil bundle so the price was right!

Battery life is nowhere near the EVF Pro, so make sure you have several good back-ups! The one it shipped with left much to be desired. For $3K I'd expect an OEM Canon battery!

What a pleasure
This summer I set off to shoot the first sequences of a documentary about the future of food. I acquired the JVC GY-L300 camera for the purpose and realized that I needed a better way to look at the images while shooting than afforded by the very compact 4K camera. I chose the recoil with the Gratical HD. After a month of grueling field exposure - I could not have been happier.

I shot in both low-light and very bright outdoor settings. The Gratical HD provided amazing detail and afforded me extraordinary control over the image - especially in low depth of field settings with fast cine primes. I will go so far as to say that, I wouldn't have attempted many of the shots (all of which came out beautifully) without the Gratical HD viewfinder support. Apart from just the high quality of the image, the on-screen metering and focus assist features were all very helpful.

I loved the fact that the Gratical HD comes with a default eyepiece cover that snaps back if you did not take it off. I have burnt a EVF screen (well, maybe 2 ;-) ) in the past when I stepped out from behind the camera on a sunny day. So really loved this safety feature.

The only issue I have with the Gratical HD is battery life. At this point the view finders battery life is significantly shorter than camera battery life.

Gratical HD
As a regular Canon C100 filmer, I was really impressed with how the Gratical EVF compliments the camera's ergonomics when used with the full Recoil setup.

The EVF was nice and vibrant, sharp and dead easy to setup. Looped well with an external recorder too and the built in meters are decent.

Only slight quirk was that when filming with the recoil and a wide lens, found it took me a short while to get used to the camera sitting back on the shoulder. More a quirk of habit rather than anything negative.

Love the build quality of this EVF. The image quality is very crisp. This is a well made and thought out piece of equipment. It is a little larger than I was expecting. The menu has many layers but seems ok to get around. This is a must, very happy with the purchase.

A Must Have
I had the recent opportunity to film in Beijing and Chongqing, China. With me I brought the Gratical HD and I couldn't have been happier. A HUGE upgrade from the original Zacuto EVF. The Gratical HD is extremely sharp. There's really no need to use any peaking or even the Red Peaking. The only times that I used the Red Peaking was when I fogged up the EVF. Other than that, it was not needed.

For the China shoot, everything was shot in S-Log. For those who have shot in S-Log, it's not the most interesting profile to look at. What I like about the Gratical is that you're able to use pre-loaded LUTs, install your own, or even create quick ones on the fly. For me, this was a major plus, as you can now view your S-Log footage in color. Another positive is that you can send that LUT out via the HDMI or SDI to a directors monitor. This makes everyone very happy on set.

Another major positive for me is having the waveform monitor in the Gratical. Histograms are nice, but having a waveform is key. Especially when shooting in S-Log.

If I had one complaint, I would say that the battery life isn't that great. I found myself going through at least four batteries everyday with the Gratical. Now a number of factors could come into play, heat being one of them. It was extremely hot in China and that could have played a major role in battery life. Another is that there is a lot going on inside the Gratical. If you are looking to buy this, I would purchase the LP-E6 D-tap cable so you have that peace of mind knowing your Gratical won't lose power when you don't have any spare batteries or an option to charge batteries.

Overall I highly recommend the Gratical and will 100% be using it again. It's the best on the market.

Perfect companion to the Next Gen Recoil
I paired this with my next gen recoil and a Canon C100 MK II - it's a matchg made in heaven.

First off the C100 MKII only has one HDMI out, by using this you have both an HDMI out and an HD-SDI out. Secondly the HD quality on the Gratical blows the viewfinder on the C100 MKII out of the water, plus it makes focusing even easier with all of the additions built into the unit.

Last but not least is how well thought out the unit it. They eye cup automatically closes in order to prevent the sun from damaging the viewfinder, you can brush the eyecup with you face to look into it while it's mounted on your recoil kit, and all of the buttons have the perfect feel that allows you to confirm your pushes.

If you shoot on the Canon C100 MKII, this EVF is a necessity.

Best EVF ever made...
This will be a short review because the simple answer is, "Yes you should buy this EVF." Incredible picture quality, great feature set, well-built - the list goes on.

One of the best gear investments I've ever made. I know it seems expensive - I was apprehensive about the price. But it is totally worth it. Zacuto really thought this product through, as usual, and it shows in so many ways. It will save time on set, and time is money, so in the long run it will pay for itself. And since it is so rugged, I'll be using it for a very long time, and you can't say that about the last electronic device you bought. Five stars.

Review of Zacuto's Gratical EVF
I had the opportunity to test the Gratical EVF while on a shoot with my RED camera at The Second City in Chicago. In short, Zacuto's Gratical EVF is pretty amazing, and I'd recommend that other filmmakers check it out.

Not only is the EVF compatible with my new RED camera, It's also compatible with almost every other camera out there.

I think every camera needs a good EVF to help filmmakers focus up their shots. Most of today's cameras come with small screens, which aren't as effective when you're on location outside on a bright sunny day trying to focus up your shot. Glare and reflection can make that really challenging. Even though I have a 7-inch touch-screen monitor on my RED camera, I still found myself looking through the Gratical to check my focus while on my shoot. A camera monitor is great to have and gives you a good sense of what your shot will look like on screen. But having a good EVF can help you ensure your shot is truly in focus.

What I like best about the Gratical EVF is that it feels like it's a part of my RED camera. It doesn't stick out like a third-party piece of gear. Finally, we have a solid viewfinder that works with every camera!
