Is Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters Worth Playing Today? | Star Control 2 Review | UQM Review
This is a review of my favourite game of all time, Star Control 2; now better known as The Ur-Quan Masters. But is this game, made by the people behind the Skylanders series, worth the TIME and the MONEY to add it to your backlog? (Spoilers: It's free!)

Star Control 3 Review
Star Control 3 was one of those rare games that was cursed from the beginning of development. Enjoyed by people who have never experienced Star Control 2: The Ur Quan Masters, and loathed by those who have, it's not necessarily as terrible as most people make it out.
There are quite a few positives to the game, but they are vastly outweighed by the negatives, which is a shame . It tries to do too much - and because of this fails in almost every regard. I must admit, for all the battering I intend to give this game, I did enjoy playing it, though not nearly as much as the Ur Quan Masters.
The main positive of the game is the development of the new Alien races, several which are rather well written and very unique, which helps to bring new life to the Kessari quadrant. This is let down by ...

Star Control 3 - The Clairconctlar
Boring. Kind of interesting speech gimmick though. Boring puppet too. Then again I normally wouldn't base a race on you know A ROCK. Then again, SC2 managed to make some awesome races out of rocks (Chenjesu, Taalo, Chmmr) that were not as tremendously boring as the Clairconctlar.
Oh Starcon3. You tried so hard.

Star Control 3 - The Doog
Someone asked for some of the other races so HERE YOU GO. Not a bad puppet really, a little limited in motion tho. I didn't get their more pensive look but eh.
Man when you buy their colonies you are like set on fuel for liiiife.

Star Control 3 - The Lk
Finally getting the later races. I kind of like their voice. It's kind of neat in a weird hissing way. I dunno. I also like the idea of mushroomsnake things, and their puppet is kind of interesting. Also I like saying Lk. LK.
Although again, SC3 takes things that COULD be interesting, and then does nothing with them. The Lk have potential (precursor potential hurr hurr) but it's just not realized like it would be in, say, SC2. Ah well.
GOD WILL EVERYONE SHUT UP ABOUT THE PRECURSORS.

Reasons Why Star Control 2 Is One of the Greatest Video Games of All Time
The 1990s saw the rise of many legendary video games, some of which became genre-defining while others went on to join the pantheon of the greatest video games of all time. In 1992, Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters was released, and since that time it has won numerous awards, as well as the prestigious honour of being named as one of the greatest video games of all time.
The video game industry may have moved on since then, but almost 30 years later Star Control 2 remains so iconic and memorable to many fans of the series like myself. It is little wonder that a fan-remake of the game exists and is still being downloaded and played today. I invite you to join me now as I travel through hyperspace and befriend one of the alien races of the Star Control universe.

This is let down by some poor decisions and neglect of the races many people knew and loved in The Ur Quan Masters.
I especially like the Daktaklakpak, what little I saw of the Ktang and the Xchaggers, though I could take or leave the rest of them to be honest. The Lk are only really amusing when they start talking about the Red Spiral Rail, and I just feel sorry for the Doog. Asides from that though, everything else is lackluster, and thoroughly unenjoyable, though I guess the Ploxis, are well written if nothing else.
The story is actually extremely good. The idea of the Eternal Ones coming to drain the galaxy of sentience, though it should really be sapience as every freakin' living thing has some form of sentience - is a good one. The writing for species is generally very intelligent, and the Exquivian idea of nothingness of mind fits in very well, though they're far too irritating to talk to and look far too much like me to really be enjoyable.
One of the main issues is that the game is far too stagnant. Asides from preprogrammed events such as the Vux attacking the Mycon, star systems being destroyed by Interdimensional Fatigue and the odd conflict here and there, the AI does not attempt to attack or engage with your allies. This comes in sharp contrast to the spheres of influence in The Ur Quan Masters, which shift based on a number of varying factors. By contrast, there is nothing in the way of threats when it comes to your colonies, and asides from pre ordained story based events, the universe is unchanging.
Conceptually there are some huge flaws when it comes to the original races, the biggest for me being that the Supox are the ones wiped out from the League of Sentient Races, whilst allowing the immense power of the Utwig, the Ur Quan and the Chmmr to carry the player along with the busted Precursor vessel. Taking out the Ur Quan would have made for a better story, as their ships are utterly horrifying and totally busted in the game's battle design.
The battles themselves are made unneccessarily annoying by bad programming. The Daktaklakpak ships try and avoid combat against a lot of ships which means long drawn out battles won by sheer luck most of the time, so Penetrators and several other League vessels are made almost completely useless because of these issues.
The game itself is wracked with bugs, which ultimately let down every good aspect of it. Your reliance on fuel sometimes results in you being trapped in allied systems for ages as time ticks by which is frustrating. You also have to wait sometimes for ships to identify you and move in or you won't get necessary dialog which is the most infuruating in game bug. The game's colony mechanic is passable, but feels like it's 25% of what was intended to be.
I think the Map was actually a useful design when it comes to colonies producing fuel. As you spend so much time trying to figure out where systems are, it does allow you to build up what you need without realising it.
It saddens me that there is a clear yearning to deliver a lot to the player, and I really feel that the development team tried incredibly hard and don't deserve the flack they receive. They delivered an exceptional though universally hated design with character puppets which for the time was pretty decent, and the 3d battlefield - whilst horrible to play in clearly took a lot of time and effort.
The story as I have mentioned is very good and for the most part, I think with more development time and sorting out bugs, maybe removing the colony system and speeding up fuel production to compensate could have allowed them to build a better game. The concepts are great. Systems being destroyed by Interdimensional Fatigue, an evil alien race that eats the intelligence of beings, even the ideas which revolved around the precursors I didn't mind. So what if they're giant space cows, I don't really care. We didn't really need to meet them but they weren't a bad concept which fit the story well.
I've played Star Control 3 through several times, and whilst it's playable and to a point enjoyable, it's got an impossible task trying to live up to The Ur Quan Masters. I rate it a 3.5 out of 10.

Although again, SC3 takes things that COULD be interesting, and then does nothing with them. The Lk have potential (precursor potential hurr hurr) but it's just not realized like it would be in, say, SC2. Ah well.

I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, fan of retro games, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EACH of the video games in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, and are not meant to be definitive, in depth reviews; this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey itself. From Mario games to the Halo series, from arcade games to Commodore 64, PC games to the NES and Sega Genesis, Playstation to the Xbox, let's play those classic retro games that we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...
Star Control 3
from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Control_3
Star Control 3 is a video game developed by Legend Entertainment. Legend were hired by Accolade to create a sequel to Star Control II when the original creators Toys For Bob expressed no interest in creating the sequel with the same budget as Star Control II (which left them working without pay for several months). It was released for DOS and the Macintosh in 1996, and re-released in 2011 with Windows support on GOG.com.
The game uses a 2.5D form of melee combat, but 2D combat is still available. However, unlike Star Control II, all ship designs absent from the story mode were omitted (with the exception of the Arilou). The module tunes of the second game were replaced with MIDI music, and pixel animations for communication with aliens were replaced with rendered and digitized 2D graphics of live puppets.
The gameplay is a mix of the melee combat and alien encounter dialogue trees from Star Control II, with new colony management elements[1]. Star Control II's resource gathering and hyperspace travel gameplay elements were omitted.
The story expands on the mystery of the Precursors' disappearance, and introduces new enemies in the form of the Hegemonic Crux.
Shortly after the end of Star Control II, hyperspace mysteriously collapses throughout the galaxy, stranding most space faring races. The Captain, living on Unzervalt, builds another precursor ship, with an experimental "warp bubble" drive that allows it to travel between star systems without using hyperspace. The Captain contacts the other races and they discover that the hyperspace collapse is somehow connected with the Rainbow Worlds, and that it originates near the galactic core in the Kessari quadrant. The Captain is sent to the Kessari quadrant with colony ships from several races to investigate and solve the problems with hyperspace.
The Captain explores the Kessari quadrant, clashing with the local power bloc, the Hegemonic Crux, led by the Ploxis Plutocrats. During his investigation of the hyperspace collapse, a new threat becomes apparent - an ancient race called the Eternal Ones that consume the energy of all sentient beings once an eon are near to returning.
It is revealed that to protect themselves from the Eternal Ones the Precursors genetically modified themselves to regress to the intelligence of a cow. They created semi-sentient robots, the Daktaklakpak, to reverse the process after the Eternal Ones left. The Daktaklakpak malfunctioned and forgot their purpose, leaving the Precursors stranded at that intelligence level. The Captain temporarily reverses the process on a single Precursor, who explains to him before its death that the only way to stop the eventual destruction of the galaxy is to stop the Eternal Ones as their unnatural use of interstellar fatigue will collapse the galaxy.
The Captain then solves various problems in the Kessari quadrant, including persuading the Owa race to stop dumping their antimatter waste on Rainbow Worlds, which was preventing them from performing their function of mitigating interstellar fatigue, and breaking the power of the Hegemonic Crux, culminating in the defeat of a Crux Precursor battleship at the galactic core.

Imagine the infinitesimal chance of stumbling across sentient humanoid alien life in this vast universe, then imagine the probability it would look exactly like a sexy human lady, except blue or green. Discover the alien races that by staggering coincidence looked like beautiful human women and subscribe: http://www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
One of the fundamental joys of Mass Effect is furthering galactic diplomacy by romancing your way through as many alien races as possible. And if your Commander Shepard is a straight man, good news: there’s an entire mono-gendered alien race who, in an astronomical stroke of luck, look like beautiful blue human women.
Let's also not forget the classic green-skinned orion ladies of Star Trek, who deploy powerful pheromones, skimpy outfits and alluring dance routines to bend all men to their will. In MMORPG Star Trek Online this translates to the 'seduce' ability, which confuses your enemies in combat.
In Redneck Rampage, on the other hand, the invading alien race exhibits an extreme sexual dimorphism where the males are horrifying monsters with names like such as Assface and the females are blue humanoids in dominatrix outfits. Who knew there was a fetish wear store on Alpha Centauri?
