The outbreak of the Black Death in the 14th century decimated populations across Europe, Asia and Africa. Prevailing and sometimes bizarre beliefs about its causes and cures are discussed in this stylised and at times gruesome presentation which is sure to capture viewer attention.

The "Black Plague" or "Black Death" epidemic swept through Europe from 1348 through 1351, killing an estimated 25--50% of Europeans. Some estimates are as high as 2/3 of the population of Europe. The Black Death followed a period of population growth in Europe which, combined with two years of cold weather and torrential rains that wiped out grain crops, resulted in a shortage of food for humans and rats. This caused people and animals to crowd in cities, providing an optimal environment for disease.

The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1348 and 1350. Although there were several competing theories as to the etiology of the Black Death, it has been conclusively proven via analysis of ancient DNA from plague victims in northern and southern Europe that the pathogen responsible is the Yersinia pestis bacterium. Thought to have started in China or central Asia, it travelled along the Silk Road and reached the Crimea by 1346.
From there it was probably carried by Oriental rat fleas living on the black rats that were regular passengers on merchant ships. It spread throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30–60 percent of Europe's population, reducing world population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in the 14th century. The aftermath of the plague created a series of religious, social and economic upheavals, which had profound effects on the course of European history. It took 150 years for Europe's population to recover. The plaugue occasionally reoccurred in Europe until 19th century.

The "Black Plague" or "Black Death" epidemic swept through Europe from 1348 through 1351, killing an estimated 25--50% of Europeans. Some estimates are as high as 2/3 of the population of Europe. The Black Death followed a period of population growth in Europe which, combined with two years of cold weather and torrential rains that wiped out grain crops, resulted in a shortage of food for humans and rats. This caused people and animals to crowd in cities, providing an optimal environment for disease. -

Because Europe was trading with the East, medieval Europeans were aware of a mysterious disease sweeping through Asia in the 1330s. From Central Asia, the disease moved along an established trade route, passing through Turkestan and the Black Sea Region (Crimea and the Byzantine Empire). In 1347, Kaffa, a town in modern-day Ukraine that was a Genoese trading post, came under attack by a Tartar army. When the Tartars were killed by the plague, the Genoese at first rejoiced: God had answered their prayers and punished their enemy. But that celebration ended when the Tartars began launching the corpses of plague victims over the walls of the city, hoping that the smell of rot would kill everyone in town. Because Europe was trading with the East, medieval Europeans were aware of a mysterious disease sweeping through Asia in the 1330s. From Central Asia, the disease moved along an established trade route, passing through Turkestan and the Black Sea Region (Crimea and the Byzantine Empire).
In 1347, Kaffa, a town in modern-day Ukraine that was a Genoese trading post, came under attack by a Tartar army. When the Tartars were killed by the plague, the Genoese at first rejoiced: God had answered their prayers and punished their enemy. But that celebration ended when the Tartars began launching the corpses of plague victims over the walls of the city, hoping that the smell of rot would kill everyone in town. The smell didn't kill the Genoese, of course, but the disease did. The panicked Genoese threw the corpses back or submerged them in water. But it was no use; they were already exposed. As the dying Tartars retreated, the Genoese fled by ship to Sicily, taking the deadly disease with them to Europe. Black Death epidemic killed an estimated 50 million Chinese and other Asian during the 15 years before it reached Constantinople in 1347.
Kaffa wasn't the only eastern trading port on the Black Death's path, but Genoa's ships took the blame for bringing the pestilence. Once it hit Europe, the Black Death moved fast, traveling at an average speed of 2.5 miles per day (4 km per day) [source: Duncan, Scott]. From the Mediterranean ports, the disease took two paths; one through France that eventually made its way to England and Ireland, and one through Italy that went to Austria and Germany.
Why is it called the Black Death?
Many think that the Black Death got its name from the blackened tumors that covered the victims' bodies. But it's more likely a mistranslation of the Latin term for the plague, Atra mors. "Atra" can be translated as either "terrible" or "black."

Hey guys, I am covered in and was devouring Vegemite, vegemite is a very popular and common yeast spread in Australia. Since HowToBasic and I are both Australians, we thought we'd celebrate my 400,000 subscribers by doing a little Vegemite extravaganza.
Vegemite triggers the umami taste in the taste buds which is one of the 5 basic tastes. A loanword from the Japanese (うま味?), umami can be translated "pleasant savory taste".
Mostly anyone who hasn't been either bought up with Vegemite or had it over time, hates it. It's an aqquired taste and I wouldn't reccomend digging in, use a light layer over some toast WITH butter.
Vegemite smells and tastes like the left over shit at the bottom of a pan after cooking meat and leaving it out for a few weeks. Mix in 2 bags of salt and the texture of tar and YOU GOT VEGEMITE.

King Leopold II of Belgium turned Congo into its private colony between 1885 and 1908. Under his control, Congo became a Slave labor camp of shocking brutality. Leopold posed as the protector of Africans fleeing Arab slave-traders but in reality, he carved out an empire based on terror to harvest rubber.
Families were held as hostages, starving to death if the men failed to produce enough wild rubber. Children's hands were chopped off as punishment for late deliveries.
The Belgian government has denounced this documentary as a "tendentious diatribe" for depicting King Leopold II as the moral forebear of Adolf Hitler, responsible for the death of 10 million people in his rapacious exploitation of the Congo.
