Stephen Fung (Chinese: 馮德倫, Fung Tak-lun; born 9 August 1974) is a Hong Kong actor, singer, writer and film director.
Stephen Fung Tak-lun was born in Hong Kong, and is a graduate of the University of Michigan. Stephen made his acting debut in Forbidden Nights (1990), playing the childhood version of the male lead. By 1998, Stephen was voted by the Hong Kong press as "Upcoming Actor of the Year." In 2004, Stephen wrote/directed/starred in his feature film directorial debut, Enter the Phoenix, for Jackie Chan's newly formed company, JCE Movies Limited; it became an instant hit. His second directing/starring feature, House of Fury, Stephen's first collaboration with legendary action director Yuen Wo-ping, proves also to be a success. House of Fury was the opening film for the Hong Kong International Film Festival 2005, official selection for the 18TH Tokyo International Film Festival, and at home, the highest grossing Hong Kong film for the first half of 2005. Besides continuing with his acting career, Stephen directed Jump, written and produced by Stephen Chow for Sony Columbia Pictures Asia. In 2012, Stephen directed the first two installments, Tai Chi 0 and Tai Chi Hero, in the "Taichi Trilogy." The two films had a combined gross of over US$50 million worldwide. Fung currently serves as executive producer and action director of the AMC original series, Into the Badlands, which stars Daniel Wu.
Often shortened to t'ai chi, taiji or tai chi in English usage, t'ai chi ch'uan or tàijíquán is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. Though originally conceived as a martial art, it is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: competitive wrestling in the format of pushing hands (tui shou), demonstration competitions, and achieving greater longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims with differing emphasis. Some training forms of t'ai chi ch'uan are especially known for being practiced with relatively slow movements.
Today, t'ai chi ch'uan has spread worldwide. Most modern styles of t'ai chi ch'uan trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu (Hao), and Sun. All of the former, in turn, trace their historical origins to Chen Village.
The term "t'ai chi ch'uan" translates as "supreme ultimate fist", "grand supreme fist", "boundless fist", "supreme ultimate boxing" or "great extremes boxing". The chi in this instance is the Wade–Giles transliteration of the Pinyin jí, and is distinct from qì (ch'i, "life energy"). The concept of the taiji ("supreme ultimate"), in contrast with wuji ("without ultimate"), appears in both Taoist and Confucian Chinese philosophy, where it represents the fusion or mother of yin and yang into a single ultimate, represented by the taijitu symbol . T'ai chi ch'uan theory and practice evolved in agreement with many Chinese philosophical principles, including those of Taoism and Confucianism.
Into the Badlands is a 1991 American western horror film, released directly to TV. It stars Bruce Dern, Mariel Hemingway, and Helen Hunt.
The film was directed by Sam Pillsbury and written by Dick Beebe, Marjorie David, and Gordon T. Dawson.
It was nominated for a 1992 Primetime Emmy in Cinematography for a Miniseries or a Special (Johnny E. Jensen, director of Photography).
Three seemingly disconnected stories are joined together by a mystery Man in Black (T.L. Barston, played by Bruce Dern). This bounty hunter searches the Old West for Red Roundtree, a wanted outlaw.
Stephen or Steven /ˈstiːvən/ is a masculine first name, derived from the Greek name Στέφανος (Stéfanos), in turn from the Greek word "στέφανος", meaning "wreath, crown, honour, reward", literally "that which surrounds or encompasses". In ancient Greece, a wreath was given to the winner of a contest (from which the crown, symbol of rulers derived). The use of the noun was first recorded in Homer's Iliad. The name is significant to Christians: according to the Book of Acts in the New Testament, Saint Stephen was a deacon who was stoned to death and is regarded as the first Christian martyr. The name has many variants, which include Stephan, Stevan, Stefan and Stevon.
In Middle English, the name Stephen or Stephan was pronounced as a bi-syllabic word — Step-hen or Step-han — much like a Scandinavian surname. Steve was pronounced as it is in Modern English. This etymological usage began a decline in the mid-19th century.
Steve is the common short form, while various diminutives such as Stevie and Ste are also used. Many family names are derived from Stephen: the most common are Stephens/Stevens and Stephenson/Stevenson (others include Stephen, Stephan, Staphan, Stefan, Stevin and Stever).
Tai Chi 0 or Tai Chi Zero (太極之零開始) or (太極:從零開始) is a 2012 Chinese 3D martial arts film directed by Stephen Fung. It is a fictitious retelling of how the Chen style of the martial art t'ai chi ch'uan, that for generations was kept within the Chen family of Chenjiagou, was taught to the first outsider, Yang Luchan, by Chen Changxing. This is the first film to be produced by Stephen Fung's and Daniel Wu's new production company, Diversion Pictures and also marks the acting debut of Jayden Yuan, who plays the lead role. This film was shot back-to-back with its sequel, Tai Chi Hero. They are to be followed by a third as-of-yet undeveloped movie named Tai Chi Summit.
