The four species of avocets /ˈævəsɛt/ are a genus, Recurvirostra, of waders in the same avian family as the stilts.
Avocets have long legs and long, thin, upcurved bills (giving their scientific name Recurvirostra) which they sweep from side to side when feeding in the brackish or saline wetlands they prefer. The plumage is pied, sometimes also with some red.
Members of this genus have webbed feet and readily swim. Their diet consists of aquatic insects and other small creatures. They nest on the ground in loose colonies. In estuarine settings they may feed on exposed bay muds or mudflats.
The pied avocet is the emblem of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
The four species, all in the genus Recurvirostra, are:
In a large colony they are aggressively defensive and chase off any other species of birds that try to nest among or near them. That causes the annoyed remark "Avocet: Exocet" from some British birdwatchers.

He was born in Glasgow and came to prominence in London in the 1960s, as an acoustic guitarist, as well as a singer-songwriter. He recorded at least 25 albums and toured extensively from the 1960s to the 21st century.

In 1968, he co-founded the band Pentangle, touring and recording with them until their break-up in 1972. He then took a few years' break from music, returning in the late 1970s to work on a series of projects with other musicians. He joined a reformed Pentangle in the early 1980s and remained with them as they evolved through various changes of personnel until 1995. Until his death, Jansch continued to work as a solo artist.
Jansch's work influenced such artists as Al Stewart, Paul Simon, Johnny Marr, Elton John, Ian Anderson, Bernie Taupin, Bernard Butler, Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Graham Coxon, Donovan, Neil Young, Fleet Foxes, Devendra Banhart, Neil Halstead, and Roy Harper.

Lay down it's late now
The medicine is kicking in
Or could it be something else
You're wearing thin
You're wearing thin
Breathe in and breathe out
The harmonies of charred black wounds
Playing time with the rhthym
In this room I can wait too long
If it's time to go
Will you stop to tell me?
In this room all that's left is hope
Will I wait alone?
Will you ever tell me?
Slow down and fade out
Come tomorrow time will tell
Will it keep holding out?
I'm wearing thin
I'm wearing thin
Hands down and hands out
I'm holding on until you go
But this I ask of you
Don't let me wait too long
Don't let me wait too long
In this room I can wait too long
If it's time to go
Will you stop to tell me?
In this room all that's left is hope
Will I wait alone?
Will you ever tell me?
And it's so hard to see you smile
As you're choking on every breath
And you're waning
And I'm waiting now
Just don't let me wait too long
In this room I can wait too long
If it's time to go
Will you stop to tell me?
In this room all thats left is hope
Will I wait alone?
Will you ever tell me?
In this room I can't wait too long
When it's time to go
Will you stop to tell me?
In this room all that's left is hope
