Sorghum is considered one of the crops that have received the least attention from scientific researchers in Kenya - a situation that has earned it the tag of being an orphan crop. This is despite its hugely untapped potential to boost the country's food security which is heavily dependent on maize. Tonight on our weekly agribusiness segment "Smart Farm", we take a look at how sorghum is now gaining commercial ground and how it has enriched the life of Samuel Achoro, a farmer in Homa Bay County.

In the autumn of 2014, the Red Sorghum 《红高粱》 television drama series took China and the Chinese-speaking world by storm. Largely based on Mo Yan's novel, it was expected to be critically acclaimed and a commercial hit. To whet the appetite of viewers and optimize its chances of success, the producers threw into the mix all the secret ingredients of a Hollywood blockbuster -- sex, drugs and violence. Sex in the form of copious bed scenes all exquisitely executed, drugs in the form of opium, and violence in the form of lawless banditry during China's era of warlordism. And then, some more bloody violence during the Anti-Japanese Resistance War. On top of that, Red Sorghum managed to cast the sublimely gifted Qin Hailu to play a lead role, bringing the entire drama series to life and breathing new life into Mo Yan's original book.
This video . . . .
This video includes some light moments of Qin Hailu in the film set interspersed with some choice cuts from production, a mix of fiction and reality. Qin Hailu has always been known among her peers to take work seriously, but she's not always all work and no play. When the moment allows, she does know how to sit back and relax, lounge under the balmy skies of late summer, saunter languidly if not coquettishly in the courtyard, enjoy the sinful pleasure of taking a girlie peek at her crush, get herself high in a cloud of opium smoke and care not about the world. A woman of quintessential Chinese grace and beauty, Qin Hailu is very much comfortable in her own skin. But there are times when the weather requires her to slip into a fur coat, a proud tradition of the people of northeastern China (Dongbei) from whence she hails. In life and in work, she only takes in as much as she can chew. Being the straight-talking northeasterner that she is, Qin Hailu always speaks her mind and spits it right out. When she's madly in love, Qin Hailu does not mind falling head over heels, tumbling and rolling over with the man she cares for. Waiting anxiously for the biggest scene of her character Shuxian, the scarlet wedding ceremony, she takes a cigarette break to blow off some steam. And then there's this thing between Qin Hailu and horses. For someone known for her work ethic and born in the Chinese lunar year of the horse, Qin Hailu does not like horsing around or being taken for a ride by a horse she couldn't rein in. Simply put, Qin Hailu and horseplay don't go together. As filmed in the set, the horse shot back at her with some noxious gas, followed by a whiplash of its tail right in the face of Qin Hailu. Not exactly a pleasant experience, but we all have to learn to hold our horses, literally that is. Finally, this entire drama series was filmed in accordance with the strictest standards and regulations of China's laws. No real human baby or infant was used in its production, as Qin Hailu reveals in the last few seconds of this video. As always, it's been a pleasure to watch another masterpiece of Qin Hailu, a real renjing 人精. Just couldn't get enough of her.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiffy_Pop
Jiffy Pop is a popcorn brand of ConAgra Foods. The product combines popcorn kernels, oil and flavoring agents with a heavy-gauge aluminum foil pan and expandable, light-gauge aluminum foil cover. As the pan is heated, the popping corn causes the cover foil to unfold and puff up. "Jiffy" in the name alludes to the short cooking time...
History
Frederick C. Mennen of LaPorte, Indiana, a chemist, inventor and industrialist, is credited with developing the product in 1958. Mennen began marketing Jiffy Pop in 1959. American Home Products purchased Jiffy Pop from Mennen that same year, and within one year the product had reached the national U.S. market. In the 1970s, the stage magician Henri Bouton fils, better known as Harry Blackstone, Jr., was endorsing what the television-commercial jingle called "the magic treat--as much fun to make as it is to eat."
Jiffy Pop was based on a similar product designed five years before by Benjamin Coleman of Berkley, Michigan, and marketed by the Taylor-Reed Corporation as E-Z Pop. In the early 1960s, Taylor-Reed sued Mennen Food Products for patent infringement. The district court ruled for the plaintiff, finding Jiffy Pop and E-Z equivalent products, but the case was overturned on appeal.
American Home Products spun off its food division, and renamed it International Home Foods, in 1996. In 2000, ConAgra purchased International Home Foods.
Original Jiffy Pop packages used a plain, bright aluminum pan. This was eventually replaced by an aluminum pan with a black treatment on the outside to improve heat transfer. Also, although at one time a Jiffy Pop Microwave Popcorn version was manufactured, as of 2013 Jiffy Pop is offered in only one stove top version, Butter Flavor Popcorn...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popcorn
Popcorn, also known as popping corn, is a type of corn (maize, Zea mays var. everta) that expands from the kernel and puffs up when heated. Corn is able to pop because, like amaranth grain, sorghum, quinoa and millet, its kernels have a hard moisture-sealed hull and a dense starchy interior. Pressure builds inside the kernel, and a small explosion (or "pop") is the end result. Some strains of corn are now cultivated specifically as popping corns.
There are various techniques for popping corn. Along with prepackaged popcorn, which is generally intended to be prepared in a microwave oven, there are small home appliances for popping corn. These methods require the use of minimally processed popping corn.
A larger-scale, commercial popcorn machine was invented by Charles Cretors in the late 19th century.
Depending on how it is prepared and cooked, some consider popcorn to be a health food, while others caution against it for a variety of reasons. Popcorn can also have non-food applications, ranging from holiday decorations to packaging materials...
Popcorn was first discovered thousands of years ago by the people living in what is now Peru. It is one of the oldest forms of corn; evidence of popcorn from 3600 B.C. was found in New Mexico, while even older evidence was found in Peru. It is estimated that these remnants date from as early as 4700 B.C. Purple popcorn was found in the early 1900s.
The legend that English settlers, who came to America in the 16th and 17th centuries, learned about popcorn from the Native Americans has been proved to be a myth. No evidence exists from colonial times to support the claim that natives of North America's east coast even knew of, or, for that matter, grew popcorn.
During the Great Depression, popcorn was fairly inexpensive at 5--10 cents a bag and became popular. Thus, while other businesses failed, the popcorn business thrived and became a source of income for many struggling farmers. During World War II, sugar rations diminished candy production, and Americans compensated by eating three times as much popcorn as they had before.
At least six localities (all in the Midwestern United States) claim to be the "Popcorn Capital of the World": Ridgway, Illinois; Valparaiso, Indiana; Van Buren, Indiana; Schaller, Iowa; Marion, Ohio; and North Loup, Nebraska. According to the USDA, corn used for popcorn production is specifically planted for this purpose; most is grown in Nebraska and Indiana, with increasing area in Texas...
