‘Giant asparagus’ shoots skyward in Wilson

WILSON — It’s been nearly 40 years since Roscoe Garnett purchased a small American agave plant during a trip through New Mexico. “I just bought it because people there had them and I said, ‘Well, maybe it will live in North Carolina since I live in North Carolina,’” Garnett remembers ... E ... That is, until now ... They have been called the “giant asparagus” and are part of the Asparagaceae family....

Can I get an “AMEN!” out there?. Keep your fingers crossed; Spring may actually be here this time. For the occasion, all of the Jack-in-the-Pulpits at my place have climbed up to their little green lecterns and are giving us palefaces H-E-double toothpicks for all they’re worth ... It belongs to the family Asparagaceae; there’s something weird about that ... Besides, the slope down to the water’s edge is usually bright green with poison ivy....

One afternoon last week it was so nice that I took a walk along the edge of the woods next to our son's farm fields. I didn't expect to see many birds at that time of the day, and I didn't, but I was hoping to see some butterflies. However, I only saw one orange sulphur and a few cabbage whites ... But I could be wrong ... Asparagus, not surprisingly, is a member of the Asparagaceae family, of which there are 200 native species worldwide ... ....
