1564 students were awarded their degrees at the 18th convocation ceremony of University of Hyderabad, on Saturday, 1st October. The event, held at Brahma Kumaris Shanti Sarovar, was presided by Dr. Bibek Debroy, an esteemed economist and member of NITI Ayog, as the distinguished Chief Guest. Dr. Debroy, in his energetic address gave life hacks to the graduating students, “Happiness and contentment comes from within you, and so you should compete with yourself and not others.” He also noted about the growing economic gap between the rich and poor. He addressed the students, “You are the elite youth of the country. Just 10% of country’s youth have access to higher education. On the 18th convocation ceremony of the University of Hyderabad, a research scholar named V Sunkanna, one of the four Dalit scholars along with Rohith Vemula, who were suspended last year, refused to take PhD degree from vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile on Saturday. The research scholar was conferred degree in philosophy. As the vice-chancellor awarded him degree certificate on the dais, the research scholar stood there and refused to take it from Podile, who has been charged in the suicide case of Rohith Vemula. There was a two minutes silence in the auditorium as Sukanna refused to take the degree from the VC. Four students of University of Hyderabad (UoH) began a hunger strike on Friday demanding a judicial probe into the suicide of M Venkatesh, whose death on November 24 was described by authorities as a systemic failure. The students also demanded the resignation of vice chancellor Ramakrishna Ramaswamy and an internal probe to look into the circumstances leading to the suicide. Students S Harinath, G Prabhakar, V Sunkanna and Naveen Kumar setup a pandal on the premises of the shopping complex at UoH and said they would continue their strike till justice is served.
