The Chinese room is a thought experiment presented by the philosopher John Searle to challenge the claim that it is possible for a computer running a program to have a "mind" and "consciousness" in the same sense that people do, simply by virtue of running the right program. The experiment is intended to help refute a philosophical position that Searle named "strong AI":
To contest this view, Searle writes in his first description of the argument: "Suppose that I'm locked in a room and ... that I know no Chinese, either written or spoken". He further supposes that he has a set of rules in English that "enable me to correlate one set of formal symbols with another set of formal symbols", that is, the Chinese characters. These rules allow him to respond, in written Chinese, to questions, also written in Chinese, in such a way that the posers of the questions – who do understand Chinese – are convinced that Searle can actually understand the Chinese conversation too, even though he cannot. Similarly, he argues that if there is a computer program that allows a computer to carry on an intelligent conversation in a written language, the computer executing the program would not understand the conversation either.
Can a computer really understand a new language? Marcus Du Sautoy tries to find out using the Chinese Room Experiment. Taken from The Hunt for AI. The indie developer behind Dear Esther, The Chinese Room, has now released a new atmospheric adventure game/"walking simulator" called Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. Despite its sci-fi elements and many intentionally cryptic audio logs to go through, EGR is fundamentally a much less abstract and conceptual story than Dear Esther and I'm not sure what I think about that. The previous game's artful fusion of physical and emotional landscapes was achieved through a dense, highly literate script which could often come off as pretentious and vague for the sake of being vague. Interestingly enough, EGR takes the exact opposite approach by building atmosphere and mood through the uncanny disconnect between the game's idyllic environments and its outlandish story events. Esther's morose narrato...

Continuing with a series of reflections on issues in philosophy of mind, we consider how the distinction between syntax and semantic content, or form and meaning stands in the way of both reductive strategies around consciousness, and specifically computational theories of mind. The thread of the reflection begins with a recap of previous conversations, and then turns to draw on John Searle's famous Chinese Room argument as found in his book, "Minds, Brains, and Science", specifically in the chapter, "Can Computers Think?" We conclude with suggestions as to the relevance of phenomenology, and the moral and by extension political ramifications of how these matters are unfolded. In the second talk of his series 'Minds, Brains and Science', John Searle considers AI and whether scientists could create a digital computer which has its own thoughts. Professor Searle compares the relationship of the mind and the brain to that of computer program software to computer hardware. But can a man-made machine ever think like a human? This talk was part of the Reith Lectures given by John Searle, American philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. This is the third installment in a series of videos on consciousness. I hope you enjoy it. Speaker: Dan Pinchbeck It's been a rollercoaster couple of years for thechineseroom. Back in 2009 we picked up an award for Best World/Story at IndieCade for this experimental mod thing called Dear Esther. Three years later, Dear Esther is an indie hit, we're no longer this little academic research project but a studio employing fifteen people, we're currently in the thick of making two games at once, including the sequel to Frictional's 2010 horror classic Amnesia, and people keep talking to me like I'm some kind of expert on games. Now, I don't see myself as an expert - I still see myself as a shooter fan and modder who got lucky. But something went right... right? So this is a lightning fast history of thechineseroom, from its humble beginnings in academia, where everything was carved...

My baby says she's mine all mine but I know that she's
just Lupine
Well, what can I do
She locks me in the little room so she can howl beneath
the moon
Without fear of hurting me
Well won't somebody help me please help me in this misery
Won't somebody break this spell
And send my baby down to hell
My baby says she's mine all mine but I know that she's
just Lupine
Well, what can I do?
I woke up this morning and what did I see ?
I was covered in blood my baby's lying next to me
Her throat had been ripped out
I suppose it must be true
The werewolf must be me and not you
My baby says she's mine all mine but now I know that I'm
Lupine
Well what can I do?
Yeah, now I know that I'm Lupine i have myself a real
good time
Well, what would you do?
