Meteora is wonderful place( unique and unbelievable) where you can find 6 monasteries , 4 inhibited by men and 2 inhibited by women. The closest city is Kalambaka at just 5 km where you can find some hotels but the prices are pretty high , I suggest you to get accomodation in Larissa(100km away) or in Thessaloniki(250km away) , Meteora is a 1 day destination because if you follow to main road you can visit all monasteries in just few hours. You can visit here also a cave.
The Meteora means , 'middle of the sky','suspended in air'or 'in the heavens above' etymologically related with "Meteorite"

people usually come here to stay 1 night or maxim 2 because following the main road you can visit all monasteries in just 1 day

Is it the mixture of the thermal and the blue water of the sea that lends this incredibly blue shade to be beaches of Paraskevi? Whatever the reason, the sight and the experience is amazing and unforgettable at the same time.
Continuing on our way to the northeast, we arrived at the beach of Moles with its translucent water, where the pleasures of summer can be fully enjoyed. The area is mentioned by the well known Herodotus, the father of historiography concerning the fact that the inhabitants of the area were conscripted into the Persian army by force. This area was also famous for coining money and on the coins, Dionysus was often depicted making reference to the famous local wines this way. If we return from the past to present days, we could admire the well arranged, newly built houses, maintained gardens decorated with -- and palm trees and renovated impressive churches.

Thessaly (Greek: Θεσσαλία, Thessalía — Thessalian: Πετθαλία, Petthalia) is a traditional geographical region and an administrative region of Greece, comprising most of the ancient region of the same name. Before the Greek Dark Ages, Thessaly was known as Aeolia, and appears thus in Homer's Odyssey.
Thessaly became part of the modern Greek state in 1881, after four and a half centuries of Ottoman rule. Since 1987 it has formed one of the country's 13 regions and is further (since the Kallikratis reform of 2010) sub-divided into 5 regional units and 25 municipalities. The capital of the region is Larissa. Thessaly lies in central Greece and borders the regions of Macedonia on the north, Epirus on the west, Central Greece on the south and the Aegean Sea on the east. The Thessaly region also includes the Sporades islands.
Thessaly was home to an extensive Neolithic culture around 2500 BC. Mycenaean settlements have also been discovered, for example at the sites of Iolcos, Dimini and Sesklo (near Volos). In Archaic and Classical times, the lowlands of Thessaly became the home of baronial families, such as the Aleuadae of Larissa or the Scopads of Crannon. In the 4th century BC Jason of Pherae transformed the region into a significant military power, recalling the glory of Early Archaic times. Shortly after Philip II of Macedon was appointed Archon of Thessaly, and Thessaly was thereafter associated with the Macedonian Kingdom for the next centuries. Thessaly later became part of the Roman Empire as part of the province of Macedonia.

Meteora is wonderful place( unique and unbelievable) where you can find 6 monasteries , 4 inhibited by men and 2 inhibited by women. The closest city is Kalambaka at just 5 km where you can find some hotels but the prices are pretty high , I suggest you to get accomodation in Larissa(100km away) or in Thessaloniki(250km away) , Meteora is a 1 day destination because if you follow to main road you can visit all monasteries in just few hours. You can visit here also a cave.
The Meteora means , 'middle of the sky','suspended in air'or 'in the heavens above' etymologically related with "Meteorite"
is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece,second only to Mount Athos.
The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars,on the plane of Thessaly near the Pindus mountains in central Greece
You have 2 ways to get at Meteora , first is From Thessaloniki but you have to drive 250km and the second
is from larissa and you have to drive just 100km or you can take a bus from a travel agency.
About accommodation tell u that it is pretty bad and expensive ,

Travelling through the gorges of the valley, we could admire the diverse and exotic wildlife of the area. The valley and the church are famous place of pilgrimage. It is well-known that the place was a passage of strategic importance in warfare. One of the gates of Greece in the north since it was always used by offensive troops who were afraid of marching in the long narrow valley.

Paraskevi is situated on the coast of the Thermaikos Gulf in the southwestern tip of the Kassandra Peninsula. The thermal waters of Paraskevi spa break to the surface from among the cavities of high cliffs in the mountains rising over the tourist resort and this water can ease pain in the joints as well as some skin diseases. The famous Maria icon which was transported here from Thessaly by the sea stands on a marble foundation and is kept in Panagia --Chapel. Is it the mixture of the thermal and the blue water of the sea that lends this incredibly blue shade to be beaches of Paraskevi? Whatever the reason, the sight and the experience is amazing and unforgettable at the same time.
Continuing on our way to the northeast, we arrived at the beach of Moles with its translucent water, where the pleasures of summer can be fully enjoyed. The area is mentioned by the well known Herodotus, the father of historiography concerning the fact that the inhabitants of the area were conscripted into the Persian army by force. This area was also famous for coining money and on the coins, Dionysus was often depicted making reference to the famous local wines this way. If we return from the past to present days, we could admire the well arranged, newly built houses, maintained gardens decorated with -- and palm trees and renovated impressive churches.

Atop these large rock formations are monasteries. More than thirty monasteries were once active but currently there are only seven. Meteora is included in the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO. Meteora is one of the most breathtaking sites in all of Greece. The monasteries perched on top of wild, rugged rock towers is utterly amazing. Situated in Thessaly, Meteora lies in the heart of Greece. Meteora literally translates into 'suspended in the air’. Here David shows and tells us what to see and do in Meteora, Greece.
Meteora has two main towns, Kastraki village and the town of Kalabaka, which is home to the majority of hotels, restaurants, and shops. A must-do for anyone is a guided half-day bus tour. You’ll get to experience the unique landscapes of Meteora's stone forest. Even from the bus there are incredible vistas. You’ll stop at the Great Meteoran Monastery, which is the oldest, tallest, and largest monastery here. Admission to the monastery is 3 euros.
David’s bus tour also stops by one of the most ancient sites in Greece, Theopetra Prehistoric Cave. Since excavations began in the 80’s several important finds have been made. Among them include human bones, stone tools and human footprints dating back 135,000 years!
Meteora also has a lot in store for adventure travelers. One of the main activities is hiking through the Stone Forest. When you go on your hike, your guide will give you history lessons and legends along the way. If you’re willing to do a short but challenging climb, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque views from Dragon’s Cave.
Adrenaline junkies: Meteora has you covered. If you want to bring the adventure up a notch, try scramble hiking. This type of hike is similar to rock climbing but requires less equipment and the use of your hands to pull yourself up the ropes. You’ll be rewarded with epic views of Kalabaka. The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, "suspended rocks", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above") is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.
The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka.
In northwestern Thessaly there rears up out of the plain of the Peneios (Pinios) a group of conglomerate rock formations up to 300m/985ft high which have been weathered by erosion into a variety of bizarre forms. Vertical rock faces, sharply pointed pinnacles and massive crags tower up above Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki, separated by deeply slashed defiles. Perched on these rocks are the monasteries of Meteora, which take their name from their situation - ta meteora monastiria, the monasteries hanging in the air.
Originally accessible only by bridle tracks, ladders and windlasses, the monasteries have now been brought within the reach of visitors by the construction of modern roads and flights of steps and by signposting;
but it should not be forgotten that these are places of peace and prayer and meditation, and visitors should conduct themselves accordingly.
To get the most out of a visit to this awe-inspiring landscape visitors should avoid merely driving quickly from one sight to the next. The best plan is to allow time to explore the area on foot and to see some of the remoter monasteries, now abandoned, as well as those that are shown to tourists.
In the ninth century the first hermits settled in caves beneath the rocks of Meteora, and a church of the Panayia was built at Doupiani. The place became known as "stous Ayious" ("at the saints' place"), which was corrupted into Stagoi. In 1340 Thessaly came under Serbian control, and Simeon, an uncle of the young king Stephen Uros V, was crowned as king of the Serbs and Greeks at Trikala. During this troubled period the hermits sought safety and tranquillity on the summits of the rocks. Then monasteries were built, beginning with the Great Meteoron, founded by Athanasios the Meteorite between 1356 and 1372 on the Broad Rock (Platys Lithos) and enlarged from 1388 onwards by his disciple and successor Joasaph, a son of King Simeon. In the heyday of Meteora there were 24 monasteries; but decline set in during the 16th century, and only six monasteries are now still occupied. Together with the monasteries of Athos, they make an important contribution to our knowledge of the post-Byzantine painting of the 16th century.

In the ninth century the first hermits settled in caves beneath the rocks of Meteora, and a church of the Panayia was built at Doupiani. The place became known as "stous Ayious" ("at the saints' place"), which was corrupted into Stagoi. In 1340 Thessaly came under Serbian control, and Simeon, an uncle of the young king Stephen Uros V, was crowned as king of the Serbs and Greeks at Trikala. During this troubled period the hermits sought safety and tranquillity on the summits of the rocks. Then monasteries were built, beginning with the Great Meteoron, founded by Athanasios the Meteorite between 1356 and 1372 on the Broad Rock (Platys Lithos) and enlarged from 1388 onwards by his disciple and successor Joasaph, a son of King Simeon. In the heyday of Meteora there were 24 monasteries; but decline set in during the 16th century, and only six monasteries are now still occupied. Together with the monasteries of Athos, they make an important contribution to our knowledge of the post-Byzantine painting of the 16th century.
