Happiness
Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. A variety of biological, psychological, religious and philosophical approaches have striven to define happiness and identify its sources. Various research groups, including positive psychology, are employing the scientific method to research questions about what "happiness" is, and how it might be attained.
The United Nations declared 20 March the International Day of Happiness to recognise the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals.
Definition
Philosophers and religious thinkers often define happiness in terms of living a good life, or flourishing, rather than simply as an emotion. Happiness in this sense was used to translate the Greek Eudaimonia, and is still used in virtue ethics. There has been a transition over time from emphasis on the happiness of virtue to the virtue of happiness.
A widely discussed political value expressed in the United States Declaration of Independence of 1776, written by Thomas Jefferson, is the universal right to "the pursuit of happiness."

Helping behavior
Helping behavior refers to voluntary actions intended to help the others, with reward regarded or disregarded. It is a type of prosocial behavior (voluntary action intended to help or benefit another individual or group of individuals, such as sharing, comforting, rescuing and helping).
Altruism is distinguished from helping behavior. Altruism refers to prosocial behaviors that are carried out without expectation of obtaining external reward (concrete reward or social reward) or internal reward (self-reward).
Perspectives on helping behavior
Kin selection theory
Kin selection theory explains altruism in evolutionary perspective. Since natural selection aids in screening out species without abilities to adapt the challenging environment, preservation of good traits and superior genes are important for survival of future generations (i.e. inclusive fitness). Kin selection refers to the tendency to perform behaviors that may favor the chance of survival of people with similar genetic base.

Life Vest Inside (LVI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit grassroots organization based in New York City whose mission is to inspire, empower and educate people of all backgrounds to lead a life of kindness.
Life Vest Inside acts to prevent social issues such as bullying, depression, and substance abuse from materializing by taking a proactive approach. LVI utilize the transformative power of kindness to empower people to recognize their value and that of others.

13-year-old Angus has found that the true meaning of happiness lies in helping others. Sharing insights from his personal experiences, this inspiring talk reminds us why it is essential to give back to our communities, and think of others as think of ourselves. Angus Hall is a Grade 8 student at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario. Like many thirteen-year-old boys, he enjoys sports and hanging out with friends. Angus first developed his passion for service leadership on a trip to Ghana, in West Africa, when he was in Grade 3. He traveled there with his parents, brother, and three high school students from his former school. Although he found the experience of building a classroom block and organizing the school library meaningful, Angus was most profoundly struck by the sense of community and compassion he felt among the people there. Since then, he has gravitated towards service work and community initiatives. Angus was inspired by Craig Kielburger’s story and has taken part in three “We Day” events and a “MetoWe” trip to Arizona. Realizing that he is still young, Angus is full of dreams and aspirations. He is working on putting his vision into action. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. 13-year-old Angus has found that the true meaning of happiness lies in helping others. Sharing insights from his personal experiences, this inspiring talk reminds us why it is essential to give back to our communities, and think of others as think of ourselves.
Angus Hall is a Grade 8 student at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario. Like many thirteen-year-old boys, he enjoys sports and hanging out with friends. Angus first developed his passion for service leadership on a trip to Ghana, in West Africa, when he was in Grade 3. He traveled there with his parents, brother, and three high school students from his former school. Although he found the experience of building a classroom block and organizing the school library meaningful, Angus was most profoundly struck by the sense of community and compassion he felt among the people there. Since then, he has gravitated towards service work and community initiatives. Angus was inspired by Craig Kielburger’s story and has taken part in three “We Day” events and a “MetoWe” trip to Arizona. Realizing that he is still young, Angus is full of dreams and aspirations. He is working on putting his vision into action.

In this Speakeasy talk from Wanderlust Whistler 2014, James Maskalyk shares his experience working with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and explains how his journey shaped a practice of mindfulness that inspired social change.
As an emergency medicine physician at one of Toronto’s inner-city hospitals and a teacher at the University of Toronto, James has always been driven to help those in need. Yet despite all the good he accomplished with MSF—flying into disaster relief zones and working in refugee camps across Africa—he found that witnessing constant pain and suffering took a toll on his psyche. He realized that as a culture, we do not cultivate self-care. We are expected to bear the emotional weight of those around us and move forward, no matter the consequences. James knew that without balance, he could lose himself in the misery of others. This sparked a realization he now treasures: That in order to truly heal the sick and mend the broken, you must first learn to value yourself.
