Weekend Explorer's Jeffrey Lehmann visits Laguna Beach's Festival of Arts & Pageant of the Masters and goes behind the scenes of this unique Southern California summer tradition.
The most ambitious Festival of the Arts yet bursts onto – and even off – the Sacramento State campus this spring with dancers performing on the sides of buildings, a new arts street faire in downtown Sacramento, plus the traditional Family Sunday Funday, and all the attractions that make up the University’s Arts Experience.
This year’s festival (www.csus.edu/festival) runs April 8-12 and features a dance performance along the outside walls of the University Library by BANDALOOP, a company that is reimagining dance and changing perspectives. A pioneer in vertical performance, BANDALOOP (bandaloop.org) seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and the art of climbing to turn the dance floor on its side. Under the artistic direction of Amelia Rudolph, the group has performed worldwide on skyscrapers, bridges, historical sites and cliffs.
For the festival, they will perform for the reception on Friday, April 10, between 5 and 8 p.m., and during Family Sunday Funday, April 12, at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.
The festival kicks off Wednesday, April 8, with the opening of Avenue Q (http://bit.ly/1MpTmZm) at the University Theatre. The award-winning musical comedy is best described as an adult version of Sesame Street, where grownups and puppets meet the harsh realities of life in songs such as “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?” Sac State’s production runs through April 19 and features puppets created by the director, Art Grueneberger; it is for mature audiences.
That day also includes panel presentations at The WELL and the Library Gallery annex, as well as a presentation about the recent visit to Sac State by a group of Buddhist monks.
U-Create! is an exciting new feature this year – an evening street faire in downtown Sacramento on Seventh Street between S Street and Rice Alley. That portion of the street will be closed from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 9. Students and faculty will team up for exhibits, music, performances and interactive projects. Student projects also will be featured during that time at the Verge Center for the Arts, Axis Gallery, Beatnik Studios and Insight Coffee Roasters.
The official reception for the Festival of the Arts will be held 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 10, at the University Library Gallery. The event also celebrates the works on display by local artist Clay Vorhes and includes the BANDALOOP performance.
Also that day, “World War I in Art, Culture and Politics” will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Union Lobby Suite and include a poster presentation and reception to commemorate the centennial of the war.
And there’s the Faculty and Friends and Alumni Gala (http://bit.ly/1EVAQUy) at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall – part of the New Millennium series of concerts.
Saturday features Dance Sampler (http://bit.ly/19FkB5u) at 2 and 7 p.m. at Solano Hall Dancespace; Piano Series guest Agustin Anievas at the Music Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. (http://bit.ly/1CNCKcK); and a 6 p.m. screening in the University Union, Hinde Auditorium, of A Long List of Things, a video memoir by John Sanborn about his 40th high school reunion that includes Sac State Dean of Undergraduate Studies Sheree Meyer and music by her husband, David Meyer.
The festival concludes April 12 with our popular Family Sunday Funday, a free day filled with activities and entertainment for the entire family running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. across half the campus.
BANDALOOP will perform again at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.; an interactive musical parade will be held at 12:45; children and adults will be able to make their own clay creation with Muddy Hands; and Sac State’s Opera Theatre will present an encore performance of “The Cat That Walked by Himself,” a short operetta with music and dialogue based on a Rudyard Kipling tale.
There will be plenty of eats provided by food trucks from SactoMoFo and ample free parking in Parking Structure II. (www.csus.edu/campusmap)

This was Rapa Nui's final performance on stage to the people of Solomon Islands and the rest of the pacific during the 11th festival of Pacific Arts. This is one of the "Most Loved group" by Solomon Islanders during the festival, now we have areas in Honiara called Rapa Nui. This is just a partial of their one hour show during the night. Festival of the Arts
The Festival of the Arts, or simply Festival is a three-day arts festival in Grand Rapids held on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of June. First held in 1970, after the 1969 installation of Alexander Calder's La Grande Vitesse, known as "The Calder" locally, Festival was quite small with only two stages and a few food booths. Since then, Festival has exploded. For three days, nearly 20,000 community volunteers play host to over half a million people that enjoy food, art, music, dance, poetry, film, and more. The 2007 Festival featured 25 food booths, five stages, several hands-on art involvement activities, and several art exhibitions.
According to the Library of Congress, Festival is the largest all volunteer arts festival in the United States.
Food
Various local non-profit organizations run food booths at Festival, each offering a unique taste. Souvlaki, elephant ears, egg rolls, and barbecue are all staples.

Pacific Arts Corporation
The Pacific Arts Corporation, Inc. is a company formed by Michael Nesmith circa 1974 to manage and develop media projects, including the medium and the content. The company is associated with a "drawing" dove logo.
History
Pacific Arts Corporation, Inc. began as Pacific Arts Productions, Inc when incorporated on October 18, 1974 as a California corporation by Michael Nesmith (incorporated by Nesmith's accountant, Howard Leitner of Leitner, Zander, Sniderman & Co., Los Angeles). The first product released under Pacific Arts Productions was under the subsidy of the Pacific Arts Records label in September 1974 of Nesmith's own concept album, The Prison.
Between 1974 and 1981, Pacific Arts Productions created a large library of various musical artists and built its own independent record distribution system. Nesmith considered Pacific Arts an umbrella corporation over two major divisions, TV and records. It was during this time that Nesmith began to develop music videos, produce PopClips (the predecessor for MTV), and ideas for a non-theatrical home video business.

Festival of Pacific Arts
The Festival of Pacific Arts, Pacific Arts Festival, or FESTPAC is a traveling festival hosted every four years by a different country in Oceania (map). It was conceived by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (former "South Pacific Commission") as a means to stem erosion of traditional cultural practices by sharing and exchanging culture at each festival. The major theme of the festival is traditional song and dance. The 2008 Festival of Pacific Arts was hosted by American Samoa from 20 July to 2 August 2008; it was the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts.
The Pacific Cultural Council (former "Pacific Arts Council" or "Council of Pacific Arts," originally "South Pacific Arts Festival Council") selects the host country and recognizes that each participating country desires the opportunity to showcase its unique indigenous culture by hosting the festival. Host selection is based on principles of equity and preference is given to countries which have not yet hosted. The festival host country pays participants' costs of local travel, accommodation, meals, and other forms of hospitality. Entry to all artistic events is free to the public thereby maximizing cultural outreach and inclusion.

Arts council
An arts council is a government or private non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts; mainly by funding local artists, awarding prizes, and organizing arts events. They often operate at arms-length from the government to prevent political interference in their decisions. The model has received criticism for being ineffective.

Arts Council England
Arts Council England was formed in 1994 when the Arts Council of Great Britain was divided into three separate bodies for England, Scotland and Wales. It is a non-departmental public body of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. The arts funding system in England underwent considerable reorganisation in 2002 when all of the regional arts boards were subsumed into Arts Council England and became regional offices of the national organisation.
Arts Council England is a government-funded body dedicated to promoting the performing, visual and literary arts in England. Since 1994, Arts Council England has been responsible for distributing lottery funding. This investment has helped to transform the building stock of arts organisations and to create lots of additional high quality arts activity.
Since October 2011, Arts Council England has been responsible for supporting and developing museums, a function it inherited from the now defunct Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

The most ambitious Festival of the Arts yet bursts onto – and even off – the Sacramento State campus this spring with dancers performing on the sides of buildings, a new arts street faire in downtown Sacramento, plus the traditional Family Sunday Funday, and all the attractions that make up the University’s Arts Experience. This is one of the "Most Loved group" by Solomon Islanders during the festival, now we have areas in Honiara called Rapa Nui. This is just a partial of their one hour show during the night. The most ambitious Festival of the Arts yet bursts onto – and even off – the Sacramento State campus this spring with dancers performing on the sides of buildings, a new arts street faire in downtown Sacramento, plus the traditional Family Sunday Funday, and all the attractions that make up the University’s Arts Experience.
This year’s festival (www.csus.edu/festival) runs April 8-12 and features a dance performance along the outside walls of the University Library by BANDALOOP, a company that is reimagining dance and changing perspectives. A pioneer in vertical performance, BANDALOOP (bandaloop.org) seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and the art of climbing to turn the dance floor on its side. Under the artistic direction of Amelia Rudolph, the group has performed worldwide on skyscrapers, bridges, historical sites and cliffs.
For the festival, they will perform for the reception on Friday, April 10, between 5 and 8 p.m., and during Family Sunday Funday, April 12, at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.
The festival kicks off Wednesday, April 8, with the opening of Avenue Q (http://bit.ly/1MpTmZm) at the University Theatre. The award-winning musical comedy is best described as an adult version of Sesame Street, where grownups and puppets meet the harsh realities of life in songs such as “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?” Sac State’s production runs through April 19 and features puppets created by the director, Art Grueneberger; it is for mature audiences.
That day also includes panel presentations at The WELL and the Library Gallery annex, as well as a presentation about the recent visit to Sac State by a group of Buddhist monks.
U-Create! is an exciting new feature this year – an evening street faire in downtown Sacramento on Seventh Street between S Street and Rice Alley. That portion of the street will be closed from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 9. Students and faculty will team up for exhibits, music, performances and interactive projects. Student projects also will be featured during that time at the Verge Center for the Arts, Axis Gallery, Beatnik Studios and Insight Coffee Roasters.
The official reception for the Festival of the Arts will be held 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 10, at the University Library Gallery. The event also celebrates the works on display by local artist Clay Vorhes and includes the BANDALOOP performance.
Also that day, “World War I in Art, Culture and Politics” will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Union Lobby Suite and include a poster presentation and reception to commemorate the centennial of the war.
And there’s the Faculty and Friends and Alumni Gala (http://bit.ly/1EVAQUy) at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall – part of the New Millennium series of concerts.
Saturday features Dance Sampler (http://bit.ly/19FkB5u) at 2 and 7 p.m. at Solano Hall Dancespace; Piano Series guest Agustin Anievas at the Music Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. (http://bit.ly/1CNCKcK); and a 6 p.m. screening in the University Union, Hinde Auditorium, of A Long List of Things, a video memoir by John Sanborn about his 40th high school reunion that includes Sac State Dean of Undergraduate Studies Sheree Meyer and music by her husband, David Meyer.
The festival concludes April 12 with our popular Family Sunday Funday, a free day filled with activities and entertainment for the entire family running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. across half the campus.
BANDALOOP will perform again at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.; an interactive musical parade will be held at 12:45; children and adults will be able to make their own clay creation with Muddy Hands; and Sac State’s Opera Theatre will present an encore performance of “The Cat That Walked by Himself,” a short operetta with music and dialogue based on a Rudyard Kipling tale.

"I paint and I make objects. I am letting myself be inspired, having a look. There are different influences here. A lot of people come here who are not from Berllin and bring all sorts of currents with them. Well, I have to say what really interests me is realistic painting."

Head to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for a look at some of the free current exhibitions. We're here at Park Mount Royal to walk around and head to the lookout point for amazing city views. We chose to stay in the neighborhood of Le Plateau-Mont Royal. On Sunday afternoons you'll find a huge drumming circle on the east end of Mount Royal called Tam Tams. McGill University is one of the most prestigious universities in all of Canada. Poutine, a French Canadian dish, it is basically french fries with gravy and cheese curds on top. For a taste of French charm, wander down the cobbled streets of Old Montreal. Tonight we're at the Cirque du Soleil for a circus performance. The biodome is a popular attraction for families with children. Olympic Stadium is the former home of the Montreal Expos. The botanical gardens are home to beautiful gardens. Bell Center is home to the Montreal Canadiens, one of the most celebrated NHL franchises. There is no better place ot eat smoked meat in Montreal than Schwartz. The Notre Dame Basilica is located in the historic district of Old Montreal. If you enjoy checking out graffiti around Saint Catherine street which is also a shopping district. Eat St. Viateur bagels, which are really famous here in Montreal. A great way to get around the city is by Bixi bike. Montreal's Old Port is worth a wander. ¡Bienvenidos a Mendoza!, the “The Land of Sun and Good Wine.”
Located on an arid plateau, Mendoza was built on the irrigation channels, or “acequias,” that were originally dug by the indigenous Huarpe people. These waterways also feed snowmelt from the Andes to Mendoza's vineyards, which produce about the majority of Argentina’s wine today.
Noteworthy Spanish colonial buildings in Mendoza include the Banco Hipotecario Nacional, the domed Espacio Contemporáneo de Arte, in a former bank, the monumental Teatro Independencia, and the central Basilica de San Francisco.
As seen from above, Mendoza’s most central parks take on the shape of a dotted number five, like the on dice. The leafy Plaza Independencia, with has an underground modern art museum, makes up the central dot and the corners are formed by the Plaza Italia, Plaza General San Martín, Plaza España and Plaza Chile, with their richly decorated statues and fountains.
Just west of the city center is the biggest park of all: Parque General San Martín. It’s overlooked by the grand Monument for the Army of the Andes atop El Cerro de la Gloria.
Visit this “Eden of the Andes” during the annual Grape Harvest Festival, Vendimia, to see Mendoza in full swing.

La Patum, is a popular and traditional festival that is celebrated each year in the Catalan city of Berga during Corpus Christi. The Patum festival features a series of parades, street show, characters and figures that fill the streets of Berga every spring.
The Ball de diables is a theatrical representation of the struggle between the good and the evil. This celebration occurs between the month of August and September in main cities as Barcelona, Cervera, Tarragona, Reus, Igualada, El Vendrell, Vilafranca, Vilanova, etc.
Devil figures, stemming from pagan legends, run through dusk darkened streets brandishing sparking forks amidst flames and fireworks. Firecrackers are attached to the prongs of every pitchfork and the devils and dragons, intermingling with the crowds, began to dance and run through the streets and alleyways twirling the 5-feet plumes of sparks so that they shower down people's heads.
