There's literally one route we have to pass and one encounter with Team Flare. Clemont leads with a Volt Switch Emolga, a concept that's very familiar to everyone who played either BW or B2W2. It can switch off after hurting you with Volt Switch before you can hope to counter it, and despite being an electric-type there are no ground-type moves that can hurt it... besides Smack Down combos that is, but that makes contact and making contact is a bad idea with Static. The simple solution is doing it with a rock/ground hybrid. This walled the likes of Zapdos in the olden times of Red/Blue/Yellow and it still works wonders on Emolga - Acrobatics does little while Volt Switch can't switch it out. Golem's Rock Tomb 2HKOs with ease without making any contact. Clemont's Heliolisk has Grass Knot so it will enter the field next. Time to switch out to Lucario. Luke outspeeds but not until the Mega Ring is activated - anyone who has played at least a couple competitive battles will know that the speed stat remains the same on the turn when you decide to mega-evolve and players should use Protect if they want to get around that (if it's enough to make a difference). And Protect does make a difference against Heliolisk, as Mega Lucario is able to outspeed and on the next turn and OHKO with Adaptability-boosted Low Sweep. We'll be doing these strats every once in a while with different mega Pokemon in this run, so this is just a demonstration. I keep Lucario in to show its power isn't so huge at this point. It fails to OHKO Magneton with Low Sweep for example, though said Magneton has Sturdy anyway. Because it wastes its first turn to use Electric Terrain to ensure a Thunderbolt OHKO next turn, it never actually gets to attack Lucario while Clemont desperately heals off the damage suffered with Hyper Potion. So that's another gym where Lucario is really useful. This isn't really the case in the next couple of gyms however.
