Games Done Quick

Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick are two annual video game speedrun charity marathons held in the United States, managed by the communities at Speed Demos Archive and Speedruns Live. Held since 2010, the events have raised money for several charities, the most common two being the Prevent Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Borders. The events are broadcast live on Twitch. Viewers are encouraged to donate for incentives during the stream such as naming characters in a run, having the runners attempt more difficult challenges, or winning prizes. Over $6.7 million has been raised across thirteen marathons.

Format

Speedrunners take turns demonstrating their prowess at beating various video games in the quickest possible time, done in front of an audience as well as a livestream through Twitch.tv. Sometimes these runs may be executed in an unusual or specific way, such as fully completing every level, completing a game blindfolded, or featuring multiple runners racing against one another to complete a game first. Video games run in Games Done Quick events include both retro and modern titles. The runs typically feature commentary from the runner(s) or experienced commentators, as well as donations from an announcer.

Game

A game is structured form of play, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool. Prevent Cancer Foundation (PCF) (formerly the Cancer Research Foundation of America or the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation) is a United States-based charity, and one of the leading US health organizations devoted to the early detection and prevention of cancer.

Description

Since their founding in 1985 they have played a prominent role in the promotion of cancer prevention, donated over $120 million in cancer prevention research, spread public information on how to prevent cancer, and partake in community outreach. The Prevent Cancer Foundation meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability outlined by the Better Business Bureau. The Prevent Cancer Foundation is rated 3 out of 4 stars by Charity Navigator. They are also one of Philanthropedia's recommended Cancer charities.

Works

The PCF holds professional conferences around the U.S. for those involved in the field of cancer. They have funded nearly 300 scientists, over 430 peer-reviewed research projects in 39 states, and three in Canada, in more than 150 leading research institutions nationwide; as well as raised awareness of cancer and educated the public about it though exhibits, distribution of material and working with the media. Such public education seeks to teach people how they can lower their chances of getting cancer, as well as teach them how to detect early signs of cancer. Their work on colorectal cancer prevention established a framework for health care professionals to collaborate on colorectal cancer screening and prevention which was missing beforehand, and they have had extensive influence on Capitol Hill, particularly in their efforts to pass colorectal cancer screening legislation.
