A Sinkhole reappeared at the 240 Faithway
Drive preserve area Wednesday morning.
Crews for a contractor hired by the
County, working under the guidance of geotechnical environmental experts Ardaman &
Associates and
Hillsborough County Code Enforcement, finished filling the
hole.
Approximately
150 tons of gravel – nearly 8 truckloads – was poured into the sinkhole. Approximately 24,
000 gallons of water was pumped over the gravel to securely embed the material into the hole. A small stockpile of gravel has been left on the site in case the sinkhole settles further during the next few days.
Inspections determined that heavy rain during the last few weeks induced the hydraulic stress required to mobilize the gravel poured into the hole two years ago, causing it to move downward to the sink throat. This caused a new 17 foot wide by 20 foot deep hole to form Wednesday. This hole formed in exactly the same place as the sinkhole which opened in
February 2013.
