The World Trade Organization (WTO) has again ruled against the U.S. government in an ongoing mandatory country-of-origin (COOL) meat labeling dispute. After the WTO found that previous USDA rules discriminated against meat produced from livestock imported from Canada and Mexico, the USDA issued new regulations to come into compliance with U.S. trade obligations. But according to a recent WTO decision, “… the amended COOL measure entails increased detrimental impact on imported livestock.” As a result, U.S. industries, not just those in agriculture, could face retaliation by Canada and Mexico that could cost the domestic economy billions of dollars.

COOL for muscle cuts of meat has been the law of the land since 2008, but in July 2013, meatpacking interests sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture in an attempt to stop COOL. NFU, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and allies are now engaged in a legal battle to turn back efforts by meatpackers, processors, and foreign competitors to undo COOL.

Collecting the AK47 and it's various support gear is an interesting hobby.
After a recent conversation on NeverEnuffAmmos's BlogTV last Wed, I took another look at my AK Ammo (7.62x39) ammo collection
This time I looked at the country of origin of the ammo in the collection. And I found some interesting things.

WASHINGTON— Under country of origin labelling, or COOL, retailers are required to notify customers about the origin of certain foods. Muscle cuts of beef and pork, as well as ground beef and pork were recently removed from the program.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this includes muscle cuts and ground meat of lamb, goat and chicken, as well as farm-raised fish and shellfish. Fresh and frozen fruit as well as vegetables such as peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts and ginseng are also on the COOL list.
However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently removed muscle cuts of pork and beef and ground pork and beef from this list. The removal is the result of an international trade dispute Canada and Mexico brought against the U.S, reported Forbes.
In its verdict, the World Trade Organization ruled that the United States' labelling program discriminated against foreign livestock, reported Forbes.
According to the Chicago Tribune, supporters of COOL say it encourages purchases of American meat and is safer, as consumers can know the product's origin. Those opposed say tracking and labelling is expensive.
Additionally, not repealing the law could have resulted in over US$1.1 billion in retaliatory trade tariffs being levied against the U.S, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Country of origin (often abbreviated to COO), is the country of manufacture, production, or growth where an article or product comes from. There are differing rules of origin under various national laws and international treaties.
From a marketing perspective, country of origin is a way to differentiate the product from the competitors. Schooler (1965) is generally considered as the first researcher to empirically study this effect. He found out that products, identical in every respect except for their country-of-origin, were perceived differently by consumers. Since then, more than 1000 studies have been published on this subject. This research shows that the country of origin has an impact on consumers' quality perceptions of a product, as well as ultimately preference for and willingness to buy that product. Furthermore, several studies have shown that consumers tend to have a relative preference to products from their own country or may have a relative preference for or aversion against products that originate from certain countries (so-called affinity and animosity countries). The effect of country of origin is however debated, with some studies questioning the relevance of academic research on country-of-origin effects for business managers. Overall, academics seem to conclude that the country with which a product is associated with, the so-called country-of-association significantly impacts consumers' product evaluations and choice, but that given the number of publications available, care should be given whether yet another study on that effect is needed.

WASHINGTON— Under country of origin labelling, or COOL, retailers are required to notify customers about the origin of certain foods. Muscle cuts of beef and pork, as well as ground beef and pork were recently removed from the program.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this includes muscle cuts and ground meat of lamb, goat and chicken, as well as farm-raised fish and shellfish. Fresh and frozen fruit as well as vegetables such as peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts and ginseng are also on the COOL list.
However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently removed muscle cuts of pork and beef and ground pork and beef from this list. The removal is the result of an international trade dispute Canada and Mexico brought against the U.S, reported Forbes.
In its verdict, the World Trade Organization ruled that the United States' labelling program discriminated against foreign livestock, reported Forbes.
According to the Chicago Tribune, supporters of COOL say it encourages purchases of American meat and is safer, as consumers can know the product's origin. Those opposed say tracking and labelling is expensive.
Additionally, not repealing the law could have resulted in over US$1.1 billion in retaliatory trade tariffs being levied against the U.S, reported the Chicago Tribune.
