Description: Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theatre form, which originated in the Edo period at the beginning of the seventeenth century and was particularly popular among townspeople. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki plays, but eventually only male actors performed the plays: a tradition that has remained to the present day. Male actors specialized in womens roles are called onnagata. Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style).
Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart. The actors speak in a monotone voice and are accompanied by traditional instruments. The Kabuki stage is equipped with several gadgets, such as revolving stages and trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the Kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that extends into the audience. Important characteristics of Kabuki theatre include its particular music, costumes, stage devices and props as well as specific plays, language and acting styles, such as the mie, in which the actor holds a characteristic pose to establish his character. Keshÿ, the particular make-up, provides an element of style easily recognizable even by those unfamiliar with the art form.
After 1868, when Japan opened to Western influence, actors strove to heighten the reputation of Kabuki among the upper classes and to adapt the traditional styles to modern tastes. Today, Kabuki is the most popular of the traditional styles of Japanese drama.

The individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing (歌), dance (舞), and skill (伎). Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing". These are, however, ateji characters which do not reflect actual etymology. The kanji of 'skill' generally refers to a performer in kabuki theatre. Since the word kabuki is believed to derive from the verb kabuku, meaning "to lean" or "to be out of the ordinary", kabuki can be interpreted as "avant-garde" or "bizarre" theatre.[1] The expression kabukimono (歌舞伎者) referred originally to those who were bizarrely dressed and swaggered on a street.

This 35-minute documentary film is about Ennosuke Ichikawa, aka Ennosuke III, the third in a line of great Kabuki actors in Japan. I'm posting this on December 9, 2013, Ennosuke's 74th birthday. We see him in the course of preparing for two major theatrical productions. The first is the 1979 revival of "Date no Juyaku," a five-hour play in which Ennosuke plays ten roles, both male and female, and has to switch back and forth, often in the middle of a scene! We also see him prepare a rarely performed classic play that's ten hours long and has only been revived in his lifetime by an amateur group in a rural village. Ennosuke travels there to consult with the amateurs and even recruits some of them to join his production in Tokyo. He tries to find ways to shorten the play and make it more accessible to modern audiences by including filmed segments. It's a fascinating process to watch. I was unable to determine the spelling of the title of this play, but a helpful viewer posted a comment below that identifies the title as: Oushuu Adachigahara, or: 奥州安達原. This film is narrated in English and was made by NHK.

The history of kabuki began in 1603 when Izumo no Okuni, possibly a miko of Izumo Taisha, began performing a new style of dance drama in the dry riverbeds of Kyoto. Japan was under the control of the Tokugawa shogunate, enforced by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The name of the Edo period derives from the relocation of the Tokugawa regime from its former home in Kyoto to the city of Edo, present-day Tokyo. Female performers played both men and women in comic playlets about ordinary life. The style was immediately popular, and Okuni was asked to perform before the Imperial Court. In the wake of such success, rival troupes quickly formed, and kabuki was born as ensemble dance and drama performed by women—a form very different from its modern incarnation. Much of its appeal in this era was due to the ribald, suggestive themes featured by many troupes; this appeal was further augmented by the fact that the performers were often also available for prostitution. For this reason, kabuki was also called "遊女歌舞妓" (prostitute-singing and dancing performer) during this period.

Mark Daniel Ronson (born 4 September 1975) is an English DJ, musician, music producer, artist and co-founder of Allido Records. He currently works with his band under the music alias of Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.
While his debut album Here Comes the Fuzz failed to make an impact on the charts, his second album, Version included three top ten hits and won Ronson a Brit Award for Best British Male Artist in 2008. His third studio album, Record Collection, was released on 27 September 2010.
Ronson was born at the Wellington Hospital, St John's Wood, to writer/socialite Ann Dexter-Jones and one-time band manager and real estate entrepreneur Laurence Ronson. His parents are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, with ancestors from Austria, Russia, and Lithuania, and Ronson was brought up in Conservative Judaism. Ronson's family name was originally Aaronson, but his grandfather Henry Ronson changed it to Ronson. Ronson is the nephew of property tycoon Gerald Ronson. Ronson is related to British Conservative politicians Sir Malcolm Rifkind and Leon Brittan, as well as Odeon Cinemas founder Oscar Deutsch. Ronson has twin sisters who are two years younger than him, Charlotte Ronson, a fashion designer, and Samantha Ronson, a singer and DJ. Ronson also has five younger half-siblings. Alexander and Annabelle, through his mother's remarriage to Mick Jones as well as Henrietta, David and Joshua, through his father's remarriage to model Michele First. After his parents broke up, his mother married Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones, which contributed to a childhood surrounded by music.

Peter Gene Hernandez (born October 8, 1985), better known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age. He performed in various musical venues in his hometown throughout his childhood. He graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a musical career. Mars produced songs for other artists, joining production team The Smeezingtons.
Mars had an unsuccessful stint with Motown Records, but then signed with Atlantic Records in 2009. He became recognized as a solo artist after lending his vocals and co-writing the hooks for the songs "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B, and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy. He also co-wrote the hits "Right Round" by Flo Rida featuring Ke$ha, and "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan. In October 2010, he released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Anchored by the worldwide number-one singles "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade", the album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. Mars was nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are".

Kabuki (歌舞伎?) is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers. The individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing (歌), dance (舞), and skill (伎). Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing". These are, however, ateji characters which do not reflect actual etymology. The kanji of 'skill' generally refers to a performer in kabuki theatre. Since the word kabuki is believed to derive from the verb kabuku, meaning "to lean" or "to be out of the ordinary", kabuki can be interpreted as "avant-garde" or "bizarre" theatre.[1] The expression kabukimono (歌舞伎者) referred originally to those who were bizarrely dressed and swaggered on a street. -

Ennosuke III: Kabuki Actor (1984)
This 35-minute documentary film is about Ennosuke Ichikawa, aka Ennosuke III, the third in a line of great Kabuki actors in Japan. I'm posting this on December 9, 2013, Ennosuke's 74th birthday. We see him in the course of preparing for two major theatrical productions. The first is the 1979 revival of "Date no Juyaku," a five-hour play in which Ennosuke plays ten roles, both male and female, and has to switch back and forth, often in the middle of a scene! We also see him prepare a rarely performed classic play that's ten hours long and has only been revived in his lifetime by an amateur group in a rural village. Ennosuke travels there to consult with the amateurs and even recruits some of them to join his production in Tokyo. He tries to find ways to shorten the play and make it more acc... -

Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.The history of kabuki began in 1603, when Izumo no Okuni, possibly a miko of Izumo Taisha, began performing a new style of dance drama in the dry riverbeds of Kyoto. It originated in the 17th century. Kabuki became a common form of entertainment in the ukiyo, or Yoshiwara, the registered red-light district in Edo. During the Genroku era, kabuki thrived. The structure of a kabuki play was formalised during this period, as were many elements of style. Conventional character types were established. -

Kabuki: The Classic Theatre of Japan
This 30-minute film serves as a primer on kabuki for western audiences. We see excerpts of live performances of four classic kabuki plays filmed as they were presented at the Kabuki Theater of Tokyo before paying audiences. The plays presented are: "Shibaraku," "Musume Dojoji," "Kagami Jishi," and "Sukeroku." Nine famous kabuki performers are cited in the credits, including one that I've heard of before, Kanzaburo Nakamura. The film was produced by Koga Productions for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. I'm not sure when it was made, but I'm guessing the 1970s. It's quite a beautiful production and should be of value to anyone interested in Japanese pop culture, given the constant references to kabuki in Japanese anime, films and TV shows. Kabuki (歌舞伎?) is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.
The individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing (歌), dance (舞), and skill (伎). Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as "the art of singing and dancing". These are, however, ateji characters which do not reflect actual etymology. The kanji of 'skill' generally refers to a performer in kabuki theatre. This 35-minute documentary film is about Ennosuke Ichikawa, aka Ennosuke III, the third in a line of great Kabuki actors in Japan. I'm posting this on December 9, 2013, Ennosuke's 74th birthday. We see him in the course of preparing for two major theatrical productions. The first is the 1979 revival of "Date no Juyaku," a five-hour play in which Ennosuke plays ten roles, both male and female, and has to switch back and forth, often in the middle of a scene! We also see him prepare a rarely performed classic play that's ten hours long and has only been revived in his lifetime by an amateur group in a rural village. Ennosuke travels there to consult with the amateurs and even recruits some of them to join his production in Tokyo. He tries to find ways to shorten the play and make it more accessible to modern audiences by including filmed segments. It's a fascinating process to watch. I was unable to determine the spelling of the title of this play, but a helpful viewer posted a comment below that identifies the title as: Oushuu Adachigahara, or: 奥州安達原. This film is narrated in English and was made by NHK.

This 30-minute film serves as a primer on kabuki for western audiences. We see excerpts of live performances of four classic kabuki plays filmed as they were presented at the Kabuki Theater of Tokyo before paying audiences. The plays presented are: "Shibaraku," "Musume Dojoji," "Kagami Jishi," and "Sukeroku." Nine famous kabuki performers are cited in the credits, including one that I've heard of before, Kanzaburo Nakamura. The film was produced by Koga Productions for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. I'm not sure when it was made, but I'm guessing the 1970s. It's quite a beautiful production and should be of value to anyone interested in Japanese pop culture, given the constant references to kabuki in Japanese anime, films and TV shows. "Kabuki KOOL" from NHK World. Haruka Chirstine from Switzerland and Kabuki actor Ichikawa Somegoro (市川染五郎) guide the audience into the world of traditional but "living-breathing form of entertainment" Japanese Kabuki theater. This is a monthly program. And here's the third volume. -
Shunkan - in Kabuki
This work, written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, is based on part of the Heike monogatari (tales of Heike [the Taira clan]). Currently the only scene performed is the one about the warrior Shunkan and others who were exiled to Kikaigashima (Kikai island) for the crime of plotting a rebellion against the Taira Kiyomori, so this work is commonly called "Shunkan." A shamensen (ship bearing pardons) has arrived from miyako (the capital) to take back 3 exiles: Shunkan, Tamba no Shosho Naritsune, and Heihangan Yasuyori. Shunkan, informed that his wife, left behind in miyako, has been killed, offers his place on the ship to the female diver, Chidori, who is married to Naritsune. This is forbidden by the messenger, Seno Taro. In despair, Shunkan kills Seno. For this crime, Shunkan must remain on the is... -

Under the direction of Visiting Professor Laurence Kominz, CC students will perform the play, "The Medicine Peddler," in which a heroic samurai disguises himself as a medicine peddler in order to infiltrate a New Year's party held by the powerful warlord who murdered the hero's father when he was a little boy. Of course, the hero is bent on revenge. On the way, he encounters beautiful courtesans, a princess, an athletic buffoon, and the villain's soldiers. And the hero has to protect his false identity by imitating the medicine peddler's tongue-twisting sales pitch. This play is one of the "Eighteen Great Plays of Kabuki." Kabuki is high-energy, visual theater, featuring humor, romance, gender bending, acrobatic fight scenes, virtuoso vocalization, and graceful dancing — an exciting music... -

Players adopt the persona of Colonel Scott O'Connor, a military agent who has transferred his brain into raw binary code in order to combat a rogue program in the main defense computer. When O'Connor enters the system, his body forms the self-image of his ancestors, who were Kabuki actors. In my opinion, this is one the most underrated games for the NES, it has great gameplay (similar to Batman Nes games), nice music (actually, I love the music in this game), fine bosses (The one from stage 4, grr, I hate that thing) and good controls IMHO. Sadly, even if after the final secuence it says "I'll be back, watch my for next adventure", there never was any new adventure. -

In a classic tale of good versus evil, renowned Japanese actor Ichikawa Somegoro will play a handsome samurai who falls in love with a beautiful maiden - depicted by fellow Kabuki actor Nakamura Yonekichi - only to discover she is actually a giant carp's spirit taking the form of a woman to seek revenge against humans for killing her carp lover.
