http://www.expedia.com/Portland.d178299.Destination-Travel-Guides
Welcome to Portland, Oregon, where you can experience the laid-back atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest amid beautiful natural surroundings.
A Portland tour is easily accomplished on foot; this city was designed for pedestrians, so you’ll be able to get around quickly. As you stroll along, you’ll find plenty of parks, fountains, and buildings old and new to explore. Be warned, this city is known for its sudden showers, so make sure you bring an umbrella to shield yourself until the sun makes a triumphant return.
If you like a good brew, you’re going to love Portland’s alter-ego, Beervana – so named thanks to all the breweries located here. Wine snobs, don’t despair; you’ll find plenty to drink (responsibly) in the Willamette Valley while you continue your Portland sightseeing.
If you’re here with the kids – or you just really love animals – don’t forget to stop by the Oregon Zoo, home to eagles, bobcats, and a ton of other feathered, furry, and scaled critters. Travelers with children will also love the Portland Children’s Museum, where the little ones can learn from and play with interactive exhibits.
Whether you’re here for the beautiful views or to responsibly sample the vintages in the valley, Portland has something for everyone. What are you going to do when you get there?
Visit our Portland travel guide page for more information or to plan your next vacation!

Portland is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon, near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Portland is Oregon's most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle and Vancouver.
The most important places to visit in Portland are: Mount Hood (it's hard to miss this majestic mountain when you're in Portland. Oregon's highest mountain offers plenty of outdoor activities year-round), Oregon Zoo (a great place for family entertainment. The zoo has many beautiful and exotic species), City Hall (the historic renaissance style building is home of the Portland city government), Japanese Garden (situated on a hill overlooking Portland, this magnificently landscaped garden is considered one of the best Japanese gardens outside of Japan), Downtown (Portland has a well-planned, thriving urban center with many great restaurants, wide pedestrian areas and entertainment options) and many more.
If you want to save time and money, the most important Portland travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.
I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.
While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my "crib" to show what it's like to live and stay in a tiny house.
Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.
In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi's Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.
In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.
When visiting Portland, there's no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.
Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

Inside Story: What will stop Oregon stand off?
Eastern Oregon is a part of the United States that's not often in the news. It's thinly populated, and is mostly vast open space. It's even called the high desert. And they say they don't plan on leaving until their demands are met. It's happening ne

The armed militiamen who currently occupy a wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon have faced the most intense opposition yet at a community meeting where local residents shouted down protest leader Ammon Bundy in person. Bundy and several other high-profile militia members left the Malheur national wildlife refuge to attend a public forum in the small town of Burns, which is located 30 miles away from the occupation. At the emotional meeting, residents demanded that Bundy and his armed followers end their siege of the wildlife sanctuary and immediately leave town. Bundy and a group of out-of-state militiamen stormed the wildlife sanctuary on January 2 to protest the US Bureau of Land Management’s regulations of federal lands and the imprisonment of two local ranchers, Dwight and Steven Hammond.

Watch the Full Length - "The Oregon Standoff: A Community Divided" - http://bit.ly/1nlRQSI
Members of an anti-Government militia have occupied the headquarters of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in a remote region of eastern Oregon for over a week, protesting what they claim is an overreaching federal Government. The occupation is being led by Ammon Bundy and his brother Ryan, two sons of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher best known for an armed standoff with the federal Government in 2014 over a cattle grazing dispute.
The protest was sparked by the re-sentencing of two Oregon ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven, to 5 years in a federal prison for deliberately setting fires on their property that spread to the bordering Malheur Wildlife Refuge.
While the media has referred to the situation as an armed standoff, more specifically, the "Oregon Standoff," the federal authorities have kept their distance, and the local authorities, led by Harney County Sheriff David Ward, are also treading lightly.
VICE News traveled to Harney County, Oregon to meet with militia leaders, attend town hall meetings, and speak with local ranchers whom the protesters claim to be representing.
In this excerpt, a young reporter from a local school in Harney County interviews Ryan Bundy about the future of the occupation.

It’s been two weeks since an armed militia took over a federal wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon. In this special report, we’ll first hear from Ammon Bundy, the leader of the militia, as well as the Burns Paiute tribal chairwoman who disputes that ranchers are the ‘rightful owners’ of the refuge. Then, RT’s Simone Del Rosario sits down with the mayor of Burns, Oregon the town of the occupation, and a former employee of the Bureau of Land Management, the agency cited by the militia as a reason for occupation.

It’s been two weeks since armed militiamen began their occupation of a federal wildlife preserve in eastern Oregon. The group is led by Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy who ran federal agents off his ranch two years ago with the threat of violence over grazing rights.
But Ammon Bundy is a mechanic from Phoenix and none of the other militiamen appear to be from Oregon either. Nevertheless, the armed militiamen say they won’t leave until two local ranchers are released from federal prison and the federal preserve is turned over to the locals for local use.
So who are these heavily armed men? Patriots or outlaws? And will they make it out alive?

Eastern Oregon is a part of the United States that's not often in the news. It's thinly populated, and is mostly vast open space. It's even called the high desert. But all of a sudden, we've been seeing a lot of it. Armed protesters have been occupying a government-owned wildlife refuge for more than a week now. And they say they don't plan on leaving until their demands are met. It's happening near the small town of Burns, and the protesters - a mix of farmers, ranchers and survivalists - are angry about what they see as excessive federal control over their lives. They say the government is applying ever stricter regulations on land they need for cattle grazing. Federal land management policies are -- they say -- unfair to people struggling to make a living in the area. So, how will the U.S. fedrera government fix this issue?

The Oregonian (http://bit.ly/1kYvDYV ) reports that Rep. Dallas Heard, a Republican from Roseburg, talked with the group Saturday at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon’s high desert country. Heard’s legislative district is in western Oregon, outside the area where the standoff is occurring.
Rep. Cliff Bentz, the Republican state representative whose district includes the wildlife refuge, says he told Heard not to come because it would be “inappropriate.” Harney County Judge Steven Grasty, another local official, says he too advised Bentz against the visit. Grasty says Bentz and five other out-of-state elected officials from Washington, Idaho and Nevada accompanied Heard.

I bet the students pass on some good stories about the cemetery. I have to wonder how many sneak in there at night looking for ghosts. Students must get surprised by funeral processions sometimes when there is a long line of slow cars mourning over the death of a loved one.
I have never seen a college next to a cemetery before. This falls in stark contrast to Willamette University being right across the street from the capital in Salem.

Democracynow.org - The armed militia members occupying a federally owned wildlife outpost in eastern Oregon have demanded that the land be "returned" to them. But who really has claim to this forest? We speak with Jacqueline Keeler, a writer and activist of Dineh and Yankton Dakota heritage who wrote about the 2014 Bundy ranch standoff for The Nation and is now working on a new piece which in part examines the history of the Paiute tribe’s treaty rights to the forest currently occupied by the nearly all-white militia.

wn.com/These Aren't The First Armed Whites To Take Over That Oregon Land Just Ask The Native Paiute People
Democracynow.org - The armed militia members occupying a federally owned wildlife outpost in eastern Oregon have demanded that the land be "returned" to them. But who really has claim to this forest?
