error in the format of IMDB links on actors/films[edit]
EDIT: after looking more film pages it seems it was just an error by previous IMDB link number on one single page so nevermind :)

- Hi Kaldawson1010, there are thousands of articles about Bryant in newspapers and magazines published over several years which provide sufficient independent reliable sources to sustain an encyclopedic article about him. If there are such sources about you an article may be viable, but without in-depth coverage about you in multiple independent sources an article will not be possible. Does Wikipedia keep isp records for wikipedia pages?[edit]
It sounds crazy, but I have had a thought: Mr. Cruel This mans crimes are unsolved. He sounds like an extreme narcissist, which means he could possibly be looking at his own wikipedia page. Could wikipedia make a search of all isp's that visited this page? then find the isp's that have the highest frequency of visits. This could lead to something. - Whatever records we keep, that really wouldn't narrow down anything. ISPs serve large areas, and the location of his crimes would narrow things down more than who looked at the Wikipedia article on him. Ian.thomson (talk) 09:06, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

My name is Eduard Olariu, i am responsible for ALDE political party online management. I see that there a 3 pages created about ALDE Romania. One in romanian, one in english and one in french:

Please help me with this problem fot i cannot edit the names of the pages.

- The English-language article is titled Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (Romania), the name of the party followed by a disambiguating word in parentheses. If we just called it Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, that could lead to confusion with several pan-European groups. Maproom (talk) 11:19, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- Additional comments to the original poster, Is ALDE part of the official name of the party? I see that ALDE represents the Pan-European Umbrella that the Romanian Party Group belongs to, but it is unclear whether that is part of the name. Also in regards to pages in various languages. The french page that you mention is actually a disambiguation page that includes the Europe wide party, the group in the European Parliament and your group. The Actual french page for the Romanian group is https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliance_des_lib%C3%A9raux_et_d%C3%A9mocrates_(Roumanie). Also, there are *nine* language wikipedias with pages on your group. If you look to the left side on any of the pages, you'll see languages that have links to the pages in those languages for your group. They are English, French, Italian, Hungarian, Latin(!), Dutch, Polish, Romanian and Swedish. Also, there is a help desk for each of the languages, and so while we can answer questions about english, there may be slight differences as to the rules on each wikipedia. Dear Help Desk, I have posted information about the company I represent under BRAINPOWER - BPI GROUP account. The account was blocked. Now, when trying to post the same information under my personal account (Elena Kolesnik), I cannot attach the logo. The system says a file with this contect already exists. Could you please help me delete the BRAINPOWER - BPI GROUP account and all the content posted under this account? Or is there any other way to solve the issue? Tool for Global changes[edit]
The State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart is mentioned in hundreds of pages, but until recently has not had a Wikipedia page. Now that it does, is there an efficient way to wikilink the existing mentions? That is, to change the first mention of "State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart" to "State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart" in every article that mentions it? ubiquity (talk) 16:41, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Doora, County Clare[edit]
I don't know if this is the right place, but I am going bananas and I need advice. The point is the article Doora, County Clare. Originally the article was about the village Doora but that is later changed to an article about the civil parish with the same name. That other editor seems to refuse to accept that Doora is a really existing village. An admin adviced me to go there and take pictures to proof my case that there is a village, so I just did that (see Talk:Doora, County Clare#The non-existent village of Doora but to my horror, it is just flatly turned down as being original research and only paper sources are valid.
I am desperate and extremely angry... What to do now? The Banner talk 20:36, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- This map, from a citable source, shows a village named Doora a little over a mile ESE of Ennis. The coordinates in the Doora, County Clare article put Doora almost three miles ESE of Ennis, and are for a crossroads which Google Earth labels "Noughaval Drive", with Google's label "Doora" a quarter of a mile to the NW of those crossroads, in a particularly empty field. The "Doora" shown by the Philips' Atlas appears to coincide with an entirely modern suburb of Ennis, unnamed in Google Earth, on the road to Ballaghboy. I would take the Atlas as evidence that a village named "Doora" did exist at the end of the 19th century, but not as reliable evidence of its precise position. - And that is the point more or less. "The other guy" knows of the existence in history of Doora, citing a 1842 map. But does not come to the conclusion that the settlement and church on that map is identical to the present day church (build in 1836-1838) and settlement. The problem is that most people in the world can't go and check for themselves, so we require a reliable source. The person who told you do go and take pictures is, in my view, completely wrong, and has sent you on a wild goose chase: pictures never prove anything in Wikipedia unless, like other material, they have been published by a reliable source. Even leaving aside the ease nowadays of faking pictures, there is no guarantee that they show what the uploader says they show. So, I'm afraid that unless you can find a reliable published source (not necessarily print) that talks about the present day village, you're going to have to give up. What is the template to add notes in an article?[edit]
Where are the appropriate templates that assist in placing "notes" in articles? I don't mean footnotes and references. Rather, when an editor adds a little "note" to some statement (usually in a table). And I'd prefer a template that consecutively numbers the notes. And does not interfere with "References". Thanks. The article in question is User:G.gagananand/sandbox.
This sandbox has not been submitted for AFC review, which is good because it will not pass AFC review. However, I have other problems with it besides that it doesn’t establish notability. It isn’t clear to me what it is about. Does the author have some idea that he wants to brainstorm? If so, Wikipedia isn’t the place for brainstorming. What is the author trying to ask or say?
We can try to answer questions here about the notability policy, but I don’t know what the question is from this author.

Copyright Violation "The Words Hear the Light" - Misunderstanding[edit]
Dear Wikipediateam! Almost two months ago we tried to publish the following text written by us:
After some hours the text and the uploaded image were deleted because of a suspense of a violation of copyright. We´ve already send one time a letter, where we declared to be the only authors of the text and image, but nothing happened until now.
The wikipedia system found some homepages as http://worldfilmpresentation.com and maybe www.imdb.com that have similar contents. We are participating with our film at the world film festival, that is why they published our material (text and image) that we send them while applying to the festival.
The case of IMDB it´s similar, it´s us who manage the information. Then it doesn´t make much sense, when the past festival participations and awards of the film (which will be always the same) are intended as copyright violation, only because it´s just the same words found by the search engine.
We would like to know, what can we do to resolve this issue. We are the authors of the film mentioned in the text and image.

- There's no misunderstanding. Wikipedia refuses contributions that violate copyright law. It does so even if people who claim to own the copyright say that they don't mind.
- There are two things you could do to resolve the problem. One is for someone who does own the copyright, and can prove it, to submit a formal copyright release. The other is for someone to rewrite the article in their own words, not derived from another source. The latter is preferable, because as well as avoiding the copyright bureaucracy, it is more likely to result in a neutral article, without promotional language. How do I prevent the bottom row from being sorted in a table? Say I am dealing with the chart below. I want the final row to be "frozen" and to remain stagnant. - It isn't clear what you want, or what you mean about blocking the user. Read the conflict of interest policy and it will tell you basically that you should not create or add text about the company that employs you. If you use Articles for Creation, you can create pages that will be reviewed. However, if your company is not notble in itself, then nothing will help your company create an article about itself. If your company is notable, then you can create a draft article with reliable sources and have it reviewed, but it will probably be accepted after the article is made neutral and all of the peacock language that you have inserted will be replaced. Trying to use either AFC or direct submission to article space to create an article about your company is a painful process, and is meant to be one. If your company is notable, someone will create an article about it. Can you please further clarify your question? Robert McClenon (talk) 12:54, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
- It occurs to me that you may have already tried to create an article about your company using a username that was the name of your company. If so your corporate username may have been blocked. If so, you are block-evading by posting here as an unregistered editor. Follow the instructions given with the block to request a change in user name. Blocking text[edit]
I was sure that there was a warning at Special:Block telling everyone not to block for non-integer amounts of time (e.g. 12.34567890 days) because it would confuse the software, but it's not on the current version of the page, and I didn't see such a thing when I looked at several old revisions of MediaWiki:Blockiptext going back to when I became an admin in 2007. Reading over the page on Tom Cryer, who was acquitted by a jury for not filing a tax return. Ref # 10's and 11 linked to pages that are no longer active. I changed the description and provided references. My edit was denied because my edit was 'not constructive'. My edit listed he was acquitted and provided an actually working web page. How is this not constructive?
- The effect of your edits to that article was to remove properly referenced content, and replace it by content with two dummy references which did not cite anything. Also, months ago, I edited the page for 'Social Security Number'. Since I have a letter from the Soc Sec Admin that says that the Soc Sec Act DOES NOT require Americans to have a Soc Sec Number in order to work, and that, as an American I legally work without a Soc Sec Number, I pointed this out with codified citations. Again, my edit was denied. How was my edit no constructive?

- Dear user at IP 76.217.20.236: Regarding the article on Tommy Cryer, the mere fact that the links are dead does not mean that the footnote references to the source material should be deleted. Also, you deleted the text itself in the body of the article, not merely the citations in the footnotes. The fact that a particular source is no longer on the internet does not mean that the source should be removed.

- On the article on the Social Security number, your comments appear to be similar to fringe arguments -- bouncing around the internet for many years -- about the legal requirements for Social Security numbers. That may or may not be the reason your material was deleted from that article. At any rate, if you are a U.S. citizen, whether the Social Security Act itself (which is just one of many Federal statutes) requires you to have a social security number to "work" is not really important. What is important is that under the Internal Revenue Code, you are required to have and to use your Social Security number as your identifying number for the purpose of filing U.S. federal income tax returns. If you are a U.S. citizen, you are also legally required to inform your employer (and certain other people who provide you with compensation) of your Social Security number.

That may be relevant, but the more general point is that Wikipedia articles must be based on reliable published sources. - @Webninja: Did your teacher tell you to create a fake article on Wikipedia? If so, they may want to read over Wikipedia:Student assignments. To create a bogus article here on Wikipedia would be similar to going to a library and changing a physical copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
- That said, you said you are "making a w[i]ki". A wiki is not the same as a Wikipedia article. A wiki is a web site that uses some form of wiki software of which there are many types. If you need help making a wiki, then the Computing Reference Desk can help you. If you need help making a Wikipedia article, then we have many that you can try to create at Wikipedia:Requested articles. Page title that includes a "/"[edit]

- In article space, subpages are disabled. So if you move the (sub)page to the proper title, the "/" becomes part of the title.

- Dodger67, see the AC/DC article for an example; it's a standalone page, not a subpage of AC. Subpages are still possible in talkspace (they're used for talk page archiving and occasionally redrafting of content), so the software thinks that Talk:AC/DC is a subpage of Talk:AC, but that's not particularly a problem. Broken logo in article[edit]
On the Homestar Runner page's logo, the logo is displayed incorrectly on every browser I've tried and is supposed to be displayed like the thumbnail on the file page. I'm not sure what the issue is, and I think it might be an overlap issue but I'm not very sure and the thumbnail appears to be correct. What happened, and how can this be fixed? Hello. I have just finished my third Wikipedia draft. Previously, I have had two accepted: Yana (singer) and Astor Club. I have just finished one which seems to now be under name "Draft:Draft:Rainer Schlosser", but there is no box at foot of page saying "your review is in a queue for review" or similar. - When asking questions here about a specific article, it's generally considered courteous to provide a link. That said, the article is at Draft:Draft: Rainer Schlosser. Cannot log in using Firefox[edit]
I am unable to log in to Wikipedia using Mozilla Firefox 45.0.1 (the latest version). It also didn't work in a few previous versions. When I submit the login form, I am met with the following message:

- I doubt it was a setting. I'm guessing that it was a corrupt cookie that wasn't discovered until the version of FF changed. The new version tried to use the old cookie and had problems. - That "< Talk:2" link occurs because the '/' in talk namespace is interpreted as: Namespace:Page/Subpage so MediaWiki thinks that 8th Battalion (Australia) is a subpage of the page Talk:2. In article namespace, there are no subpages but subpages are allowed in Talk:. I don't have a solution just an explanation. You can see this same thing happening in other article talk pages where the article title has a slash.

- (edit conflict) Hello, Catlemur. This is do to a technical feature of the Wiki software that we use, and is best ignored. In the main article namespace (mainspace) subpages are not allowed, so the name of the article is (quite properly) 2/8th Battalion (Australia). However in the article talk namespace, subpages are allows, so technically ther nis a page talk:2 whiach has a subpage Talk:2/8th Battalion (Australia), because the slash is parsed as causing a subpage. I'm sure that the recent addition to The Australian Mental Health Party needs formatting differnetly (or reverting), but can't find a guideline to say what I should do to it. - Hi Scott Davis, as a rule we don't actually want Facebook links at all. The only time a Facebook link should be included in the "External links" list is if Facebook is the only official online representation of the subject. When a subject, such as The Australian Mental Health Party, has a website under their own domain name we do not list their Facebook link at all. I have fixed it for you. We have an election coming up later this year, so most current small parties will get some coverage then, and small parties in general are quite topical in Australia at the moment due to recent changes to the voting system for our upper house. I am gradually working through lifting the standard of articles about the current parties. Table problem[edit]
I was editing the article List of number-one singles of 2016 (Finland) when I came across a problem. The download chart (second column) should have two number one songs for week 12. I listed them in the same row, which looks very clumsy. There should be separate rows for both songs for that week. Generally, I know this can be done by adding an extra row, but I haven't managed to do it the right way. The problem is that one of the two number ones was already at the top a week before. I would like to have the row for Sanni to show in both week 11 and 12, with the row for Adam Lambert also showing for the latter. However, when I do this, it never displays correctly. On my first attempt, the Lambert row messed up the table [1]. On the second attempt, the row for Sanni disappeared from week 12 [2]. I know it's difficult to explain the problem, but I hope someone understands and can explain what I did wrong. URL redirects to ?[edit]
I use the latest edition of Internet Explorer, having found it preferable to the Microsoft Edge browser.
I don't use Special:Search very much: instead, when I want to go to a page, I just edit the URL at the top of my browser screen. If I'm at a normal page, I just replace everything after /wiki/ with the new title, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo and if I'm somewhere else (e.g. a history page), I type the page name after ?title=, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Foo. This works fine normally, but when we get into odd characters (ones that the software wants to represent with percent-encoding), I get different results — typing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ʉ properly takes me to the U bar page with the expected Redirected from Ʉ notice, but when I type https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ʉ the software sends me to Question mark with a notice of Redirected from ?. The same result occurs for other somewhere else pages; for example, typing https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ʉ&action=history takes me to the history of the ? page. (1) Why does it do this? Do question marks have some significance for percent-encoding that forces a misinterpretation?
Odd enough. But more oddly, when I type https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/? (again editing the URL, not clicking a link), the software sends me to the Main Page, as if I'd typed nothing at all after /wiki/, and doesn't mention anything about the question mark page. Meanwhile, a link to ? displays with percent-encoding, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%3F. (2) Why does the software ignore the question mark when it's typed into the URL? And why does it force percent-encoding for the ? link but not other pages? I've had comparable results with pages containing question marks at non-initial locations; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew? tells me that I've visited https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew and the link Who is a Jew? gets interpreted as Who_is_a_Jew%3F.

- Uniform Resource Locator#Syntax uses a question mark to separate the path (computing) and a query string so ? is not percent-encoded when it's written directly in a url. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/? is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ with an empty query string so it does the same: Redirect to Main Page. In a wikilink like ? the MediaWiki software will automatically percent-encode it. Typing https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ʉ in the url works for me in Firefox. IE apparently does something different when Unicode characters are in the query string instead of the path. A Google search on
internet explorer unicode query string
gave some hits which appear to mention this but I haven't examined the details. By the way, when MediaWiki converts a directly written url to a link, it assumes the url does not end with a question mark or period but rather that those characters end a sentence where a url was right before an ending punctuation character. Therefore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew? omits the question mark from the link. Many other programs like mail software does the same. Sentences like "ArKay is the world’s first company producing alcohol free liquors with a commitment to make a better life for everyone" are written in the style of an advertisement, and are out of place in an encyclopedia article. I have mentioned the name of a French man on my English Wikipedia page, which shows up as red in my article, even though there is a page about him on the French Wikipedia site. A page, Michael Gira, was recently added to a Category:prisoners and detainees of Israel. I undid the addition, as he isn't currently a prisoner of Israel, nor does he live there. Is that a reasonable category for someone who is not currently a prisoner or detainee? I'm not really certain about that and I feel like I may need to revert myself. R. A. - Reference 8 in Michael Gira reads "I ended up in Israel, where I was arrested for selling hashish. I spent four and a half months in jail." So he was a detainee there. And the category is "prisoners and detainees of Israel", not "current prisoners and detainees of Israel". - "Credible" is not enough. You need reliable independent sources, with significant discussion of the subject. Of the references in Kyle York:
- 1 is by his employer, and therefore not independent
- 2 and 8 are interviews of him, and therefore not independent
- 4 is written by him, and therefore not independent
- 5 and 7 are mere mentions of him
- This leaves 3 and 6 as possibly acceptable sources. I will leave it to other editors to judge whether they are reliable. Maproom (talk) 18:32, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
