The Evil Within:
The Assignment -
Chapter 2 Crossing Paths
The Assignment is the first
DLC for The Evil Within, as well as the first of a two-part DLC, the second being
The Consequence. It will revolve around
Juli Kidman, delving into her past and revealing what her true motives are.
The Evil Within, known as Psychobreak (サイコブレイク, Saikobureiku?) in
Japan, is a survival-horror video game developed by
Tango Gameworks and published by
Bethesda Softworks. The game is currently being directed by
Shinji Mikami, a former
Resident Evil 4 director. The game utilizes id Tech 5 engine albeit, modified to suit the game.
The Evil Within was originally set to be released in August for PC,
Playstation 3,
Playstation 4, Xbox
360, and Xbox One, but was later delayed to October.
Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners,
Joseph Oda and
Julie Kidman arrive at a crime scene only to find the place deserted. Sebastian witnesses a hooded figure massacring fellow police officers one by one. A mysterious figure then appears behind Sebastian and attacks him, rendering him unconscious. He later wakes up finding himself trapped in a land where dangerous creatures dwell and has to fight his way through the world of death and his close friend's madness in order to understand what is going on.
The game features 3 key elements of gameplay:
Pure survival horror - The player must venture throughout the game with limited resources, prompting the player to use their wits as they encounter indescribable terrors throughout the game.
Traps and puzzles - The player not only needs to struggle to survive, but also face dangerous traps and sly mechanism. Being careless with the traps can cause death but at the same time, the player can use the traps to their advantage.
Alternating environment - Throughout the game, the environment changes without warning in real-time based on the player's action, adding more twist to the game.
While exploring, the camera is set behind the player and is able to freely move them around. Though, it's been stated that the camera can change views at time. During combat, aiming puts the camera in over-the-shoulder mode.
Combat isn't always forced upon the player; as supplies are scarce in the game, the player can run away and hide, avoid the enemy by sneaking or performing stealth kills. The player also has access to a last resort weapon called the
Agony Bow, capable of utilizing various bolts. The player can shoot them at surfaces, setting them up as traps.
In case of inventory managing, the player can bring up a circular menu to change items/weapons anytime. At the same time, the player is also able to set the items to a designated shortcut so that they are able to change items/weapons real-time. Depending on the difficulty, the player can only carry a specified amount of items and ammunitions by default, but can upgrade the amount later on.
Haunted - The main enemies of the game. They move in a same manner as zombies but can also wield weapons. At some
point, Sebastian has to face a mob of these creatures.
Boxman - A large humanoid creature that wears a vault of some sort on its head. It uses a large hammer as a weapon.
RE-Bone
Laura - A creature resembling a woman with multiple limbs. Not much is known about the creature.
Butcher - A large and deranged human who butchers its fallen victim for an unknown purpose. It chases Sebastian with a chainsaw when he accidentally trips an alarm
. If the player does not successfully get away, the Butcher will impale its chainsaw through Sebastian's body, instantly killing him.
Ruvik - A hooded man that seems to be the primary antagonist of the game. He appears randomly throughout the game, sending a shockwave which seems to kill electricity. Getting close to him results in an instant death or leaving the player with a small portion of health.
