Isle of Portland, Dorset.

Currently geographical protection is only available for things like food and drink. There's a white paper on the table in Europe which recommends rolling that out to non-agricultural products. Steve Harris went to Jordans Mine on Portland to hear about how that could protect the reputation of the Island's most famous export.

Part of a photographic survey for the most excellent Weymouth Shipwreck Project, this is a an old stone barge off Portland UK. The wooden wreck has long since rotted away leaving many large stone blocks, an anchor and varioud bricks. Attempts to identify it are ongoing.

Description: After selling off their old factory to be demolished and a supermarket built on the site, Portland Stone Firms, who quarry the famous Portland limestone from the Dorset island, built a new factory. Part of the investment in the new factory was this Gisbert tile line, supplied by UK agents D Zambelis, for sawing slabs from the blocks of stone, cutting them to length, calibrating them and giving them the finish required. Once the line is set up, it is all done automatically.

Balmoral.

I was surprised how many different sea horses there are, until i researched for this carving. Carved using traditional hand tools. No power tools were used. pen there for scale.

Portland stone is a limestone from the Tithonian stage of the Jurassic period quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. The quarries consist of beds of white-grey limestone separated by chert beds. It has been used extensively as a building stone throughout the British Isles, notably in major public buildings in London such as St Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. It is also exported to many countries—Portland stone is used in the United Nations headquarters building in New York City, for example.
The term "Portland Cement" was coined by Joseph Aspdin who in 1824 patented a hydraulic binder created by burning a mixture of limestone and clay, resembling the previously existing Roman cement and presenting a texture very close to that of the oolitic Portland stone.

As part of the b-side multimedia arts festival 2014 in Portland, Dorset UK, I worked on a 8,000 year-old mesolithic site at Culverwell on the island. I had a go at cutting the last letter in my slab of Portland stone with a hammer stone and a piece of chert. I was probably the first human to use that piece for thousands of years. What an honour.

The first sculptures of extinct animals destined for the MEMO Project, a gigantic hollow tower of Portland Stone on West Cliff, Portland. Supported by UNESCO and some of the world's leading scientists. The "spiralling stone monument will pay homage to the world’s extinct species, with images of 860 species assessed as extinct since the disappearance of the dodo inscribed on its sides. As part of the b-side multimedia arts festival 2014 in Portland, Dorset UK, I worked on a 8,000 year-old mesolithic site at Culverwell on the island. I had a go at cutting the last letter in my slab of Portland stone with a hammer stone and a piece of chert. I was probably the first human to use that piece for thousands of years. What an honour.
