10 things about this video:
1. Quaid and I found this while exploring the national park area near Manly Beach called North Head. It's right where the Sydney Harbour opens into the Pacific.
2. We stumbled across this group of friends having fun and watched them and hung out with them for 45 minutes. Then The Boss offered to give us a go.
3. The guy who found this spot (The Boss) drove the bolts into the rock himself and started coming here for fun with friends.
4. It's technically illegal to even stand on the cliffs right here.
5. Luckily the wild was blowing too loudly for you to hear me swearing repeatedly before jumping and screaming repeatedly while falling.
6. Hanging from the rock, I was above 220 feet of empty space, with only the crashing waves and rocks below.
7. The rope allowed for about 1.5 - 2 seconds of full free fall. That's enough time to realize you're freefalling, freak out knowing you're freefalling, and not be able to do anything about it.
8. After the first arc, I leaned back until I was upside down, and got a view of the Sydney skyline and the Harbour, except perfectly upside down. It goes down as one of my favorite mental snapshots of all time.
9. After slowing down, you get lowered to the rocks below. To get back up, you climb a series of old, rusty ladders chained to the cliff face that were originally installed by fishermen more than 50 years ago.
10. The guys who helped are all professional skyscraper window washers or rock climbers. Therefore, they know what they're doing.

Later during world war II the fortifications were re-furbished and scaled up to protect against a potential Japanese invasion - which never eventuated. No doubt because of the big guns we mounted on this hill!

A trip to North Head, Devonport Auckland where the dis-used tunnels are open to the public to explore. BRING A TORCH! ;)
North Head was one of a number of defence forts that were rapidly set up in the late 1800s to defend Auckland from a feared Russian attack. The fort was later expanded as part of Auckland's coastal defence system during World Wars I and II.
Now run by Department of Conservation, the tunnels today are still in place and well worth a good look around, especially the south battery which is still housing a disappearing gun. Stories are told that there are 2 planes from the war buried inside.
In the mid nineties the Army was called in to jack hammer and try to find these planes supposedly in the hill. Local residents where told possible ammunition still fully charged could go off at any time, but nothing was found after several weeks work. Many of the tunnels now days are blocked and the public can only go so far

In The Rx Review's latest Box Tour series, we travelled to Sydney, Australia to check out some of leading CrossFit gyms in the popular city.
In Part 4 we visited CrossFit North Head, located in the northern suburb of Manly around 20 minutes from the CBD.
CrossFit North Head is one of the more unique gyms you'll find in Sydney. Set up in an old airplane hanger located in a national park, the affiliate has an enormous amount of room, and some great serenity as well. It's not uncommon to see native wildlife like kangaroos and wallabies run around while you train there!

We stumbled across this group of friends having fun and watched them and hung out with them for 45 minutes. Then The Boss offered to give us a go. 3. The guy who found this spot (The Boss) drove the bolts into the rock himself and started coming here for fun with friends. 4. It's technically illegal to even stand on the cliffs right here. 5. Luckily the wild was blowing too loudly for you to hear me swearing repeatedly before jumping and screaming repeatedly while falling. 6. Hanging from the rock, I was above 220 feet of empty space, with only the crashing waves and rocks below. 7. The rope allowed for about 1.5 - 2 seconds of full free fall. 6. Hanging from the rock, I was above 220 feet of empty space, with only the crashing waves and rocks below.
7. The rope allowed for about 1.5 - 2 seconds of full free fall. That's enough time to realize you're freefalling, freak out knowing you're freefalling, and not be able to do anything about it.
8. After the first arc, I leaned back until I was upside down, and got a view of the Sydney skyline and the Harbour, except perfectly upside down. It goes down as one of my favorite mental snapshots of all time.
9. After slowing down, you get lowered to the rocks below. To get back up, you climb a series of old, rusty ladders chained to the cliff face that were originally installed by fishermen more than 50 years ago.
10. The guys who helped are all professional skyscraper window washers or rock climbers. Therefore, they know what they're doing.

Known for a series of tunnels and gun fortifications originally built as a fortification in the 1870's to protect against a rumoured Russian threat. Later during world war II the fortifications were re-furbished and scaled up to protect against a potential Japanese invasion - which never eventuated. No doubt because of the big guns we mounted on this hill!

North Head was one of a number of defence forts that were rapidly set up in the late 1800s to defend Auckland from a feared Russian attack. The fort was later expanded as part of Auckland's coastal defence system during World Wars I and II.
Now run by Department of Conservation, the tunnels today are still in place and well worth a good look around, especially the south battery which is still housing a disappearing gun. Stories are told that there are 2 planes from the war buried inside.
In the mid nineties the Army was called in to jack hammer and try to find these planes supposedly in the hill. Local residents where told possible ammunition still fully charged could go off at any time, but nothing was found after several weeks work. Many of the tunnels now days are blocked and the public can only go so far

MAKE SURE TO SELECT 2160p FOR CRYSTAL-CLEAR QUALITY (30FPS / NTSC MODE + Neutral density 16 ND16 filter on the osmo lens to avoid washed sky)
In my first official vlog I decided not to speak about myself, I have instead taken you and my dji Osmo camera for a 40 minute walk to the most exciting historical reserve in New Zealand, right in the heart of Auckland city.
North Head is surrounded by controversy as some people claim it used to have much larger tunnels (big enough for cars to go in) up until 1960s in North Head and others have seen 2 of the very first small planes ever built, the flying boat Boeing, with double deck wings and decaying ammunition in tunnels that were 6-7 floors down below! These might have been sealed off for fear of explosions and looting (?).
The controversy about why such tunnels (if they actually exist) were sealed goes on to this day, there has been court cases and archaeological investigations but so far the tunnels we are going to see in this video are the only ones available to the public today. It is nonetheless a very exciting adventure with breath-taking views to the city.
This is also a great opportunity for people looking for 4k dji Osmo footage in low light, night etc, although I have also used my wonderful Quodos light to illuminate the dark complex of tunnels I went through.
The soundtrack is a selection very inspiring 2011-2016 indie/alternative tunes.
Special thanks to Martin Butler who has been researching North Head tunnels for a number of decades. He is the author of "Tunnel Vision Refocused - Unearthing the secrets of North Head". Some very interesting evidence on the tunnels and airplane saga surrounding Devonport's most "active" inactive volcano: Maungauika (North Head) are in his book.
Just as a curiosity fact: Devonport is a small naval community on the North Shore, Auckland and is where Lorde, the famous singer of "Royals" grew up/live(d) nice eh!

Oh yes, a windy day! But I walked the entire signal hill north head path in St John's Newfoundland, up and down stairs, across gravel and boulders, with railings, chain link rails (at 4 min) and no rails, with a camera in one hand and the wind trying desperately to push me down the cliff! I walked fairly quickly and turned the camera off to collect rocks, or stare at the ocean, or let others pass. So though the video is half an hour long, you might actually spend far more than an hour on this lovely journey. And ladies - no heels, no sandals, no "fashion" shoes unless you want to fall off the cliff into the ocean. -

Another totally fabulous day, were I just had the lot. Stayed overnight at Fraserburgh, the footage at the start is of Kinnaird Light House and the Super Moon. Quite a cold breeze that morning, was going to head South, but the wind was Southerly, so it was along the North Coast again for shelter. Check out that amazing Mackerel shoal..........like a plague of Locusts, glad I'm not a Plankton, I can tell you! As if this day wasn't good enough (Remember it was very nearly October) The day after the weather got even BETTER, it was amazing. -
Sea Kayaking the North East Passage - Aberdour - Troup Head.
I don't know where to start with this one, it was one of the most excellent, interesting, varied, trips, I've ever done. I left Stonehaven after the last paddle, as the weather turned grim again. Now the ONLY reason, I would ever have visited Pennan, was because the film 'Local Hero' was filmed there in 1982. In much the same way, I only went to Boscastle, to see what it was like after the famous flood. Both experiences have been wonderful, and it's an example of how being inquisitive, and adventurous can be rewarding. I viewed a lot of this coastline through binoculars from Troup Head, the previous day, and I would have missed out the first part of the trip, if I hadn't, probably launching at Pennan. The first part of the trip was just absolute Kayak heaven, it is the most unique, fabulou... -

Another totally fabulous day, were I just had the lot. Stayed overnight at Fraserburgh, the footage at the start is of Kinnaird Light House and the Super Moon. Quite a cold breeze that morning, was going to head South, but the wind was Southerly, so it was along the North Coast again for shelter. Check out that amazing Mackerel shoal..........like a plague of Locusts, glad I'm not a Plankton, I can tell you! As if this day wasn't good enough (Remember it was very nearly October) The day after the weather got even BETTER, it was amazing.

I don't know where to start with this one, it was one of the most excellent, interesting, varied, trips, I've ever done. I left Stonehaven after the last paddle, as the weather turned grim again. Now the ONLY reason, I would ever have visited Pennan, was because the film 'Local Hero' was filmed there in 1982. In much the same way, I only went to Boscastle, to see what it was like after the famous flood. Both experiences have been wonderful, and it's an example of how being inquisitive, and adventurous can be rewarding. I viewed a lot of this coastline through binoculars from Troup Head, the previous day, and I would have missed out the first part of the trip, if I hadn't, probably launching at Pennan. The first part of the trip was just absolute Kayak heaven, it is the most unique, fabulous little place, I was SO impressed. A number of other paddlers I met shared the same opinion, so I knew I was on to something. The second part passes Pennan, and leads to another totally amazing, unique place. The cliffs of Lion'Head are spectacular, and eerie in equal measure. Finally there is Troup Head and the Gannet colony. I've really just brushed the surface of what's on offer here, and still ended up with a 35min video, I could have easily made it an hour, possibly hour and half. But don't worry, I do the first half of thee trip again, only in BETTER conditions, and then Troup Head from the other end, the wonderful Gardenstown Harbour.
