Entropy : Why is it Predicted to Cause the Heat Death of the Universe?
Heat death of the universe, also called The Big Chill or Big Freeze, will happen when the entropy of the universe will be so high that everything and everyone that lives in it will perish. This will happen because an organism living in the universe wouldn't be able to extract order from its surroundings, because the latter would be more disordered than the organism itself.
The death of the universe can occur in more ways than one, and this is one of the ways that some researchers and space scientists theorize that could be the reason behind the end of the entire universe.
Everything that has a beginning must also have an end. While we know the Universe sprung to life 13 billion years ago, we don't know when its illustrious journey will come to an end. What we do know is one of the ways...

The shape, contents and future of the universe are all intricately related. We know that it's mostly flat; we know that it's made up of baryonic matter (like stars and planets), but mostly dark matter and dark energy; and we know that it's expanding constantly, so that all stars will eventually burn out into a cold nothingness. Death of the Universe | Wonders of the Universe w/ Brian Cox | BBC Studios
To celebrate World Space Week 2013 we're uploading clips from Wonders of the Universe with Professor Brian Cox. With the theory of Black Dwarf Stars, Professor Brian Cox considers the death of the universe, a time so far in the future it defies comprehension. Brian discovers that time is not characterised by repetition but by irreversible change. From the relentless march of desert sands to the erosion of a beached freighter, the ravaging effects of time are all around us. The vast universe is subject to these same laws of change. As we look out to the cosmos, we can see the story of its evolution unfold, from the death of the first stars to the birth of the youngest.
Having explored the wonders of the solar system, Professor Brian Cox steps boldly on to an even bigger stage - the unive...

End of The Universe Part1: Entropy & Heat Death
In this episode, we're going to cover the most probable scenario for the end of the universe: the heath death or big freeze. We're also going to introduce some concepts which are crucial to understand this scenario: entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, and the arrow of time.

Massive heat wave blamed for at least 6 deaths
A dangerous and deadly heat wave is gripping almost half of the nation. Tens of millions are set to broil in record-setting high temperatures this weekend, and heat advisories or warnings are in effect from the Midwest to much of the East Coast. Coupled with high humidity, the heat index will exceed 100 degrees in New York and other major cities. The heatwave is already blamed for at least six deaths. Natalie Brand reports.

What we do know is one of the ways it could happen. We call this plausible ultimate fate of the Universe Heat Death, and entropy is the culprit.
According to the second law of thermodynamics, entropy in the Universe can only increase, and it is this increase that will eventually cause its demise. Entropy is also why we cannot generate infinite energy. But what is entropy? And why should it only increase? How does it prevent us from generating infinite energy? And most importantly, why should its increase lead to the apocalypse?
In this short animated video for kids, we explain the concept of entropy in simple, basic language.

Renée Hlozek expands on the beauty of this dark ending.

In 100 trillion years the last star in the universe will expand the final atoms of its hydrogen fuel and settle quietly into a dim white dwarf, before slowly fading to black over as it radiates away its remnant heat. The era of stars will be over. That 100 trillion years is 10,000 times the current age of the universe, and so the days of starlight and warmth have a way to go. But even when they are done, the universe will be young in comparison to the long, dark ages to follow. In fact our universe will spend almost all of its infinite time in darkness, slowly crawling towards maximum entropy and ultimate heat death.

Having explored the wonders of the solar system, Professor Brian Cox steps boldly on to an even bigger stage - the universe. Who are we? Where do we come from? For thousands of years humanity has turned to religion and myth for answers to these enduring questions. But in this series, Brian presents a different set of answers - answers provided by science.

In this episode, we're going to cover the most probable scenario for the end of the universe: the heath death or big freeze. We're also going to introduce some concepts which are crucial to understand this scenario: entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, and the arrow of time.
