The top quark, also known as the t quark (symbol: t) or truth quark, is the most massive of all observed elementary particles. Like all quarks, the top quark is an elementary fermion with spin-1⁄2, and experiences all four fundamental interactions: gravitation, electromagnetism, weak interactions, and strong interactions. It has an electric charge of +2⁄3 e, It has a massive mass of 173.34 ± 0.27 (stat) ± 0.71 (syst)7000100000000000000♠100 GeV/c2, which is about the same mass as an atom of tungsten. The antiparticle of the top quark is the top antiquark (symbol: t, sometimes called antitop quark or simply antitop), which differs from it only in that some of its properties have equal magnitude but opposite sign.
The top quark interacts primarily by the strong interaction, but can only decay through the weak force. It decays to a W boson and either a bottom quark (most frequently), a strange quark, or, on the rarest of occasions, a down quark. The Standard Model predicts its mean lifetime to be roughly 6975500000000000000♠5×10−25 s. This is about a twentieth of the timescale for strong interactions, and therefore it does not form hadrons, giving physicists a unique opportunity to study a "bare" quark (all other quarks hadronize, meaning that they combine with other quarks to form hadrons, and can only be observed as such). Because it is so massive, the properties of the top quark allow predictions to be made of the mass of the Higgs boson under certain extensions of the Standard Model (see Mass and coupling to the Higgs boson below). As such, it is extensively studied as a means to discriminate between competing theories.
A quark (/ˈkwɔːrk/ or /ˈkwɑːrk/) is an elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. Quarks combine to form composite particles called hadrons, the most stable of which are protons and neutrons, the components of atomic nuclei. Due to a phenomenon known as color confinement, quarks are never directly observed or found in isolation; they can be found only within hadrons, such as baryons (of which protons and neutrons are examples), and mesons. For this reason, much of what is known about quarks has been drawn from observations of the hadrons themselves.
Quarks have various intrinsic properties, including electric charge, mass, color charge and spin. Quarks are the only elementary particles in the Standard Model of particle physics to experience all four fundamental interactions, also known as fundamental forces (electromagnetism, gravitation, strong interaction, and weak interaction), as well as the only known particles whose electric charges are not integer multiples of the elementary charge.
A top is a toy designed to be spun rapidly on the ground, the motion of which causes it to remain precisely balanced on its tip because of inertia. Such toys have existed since antiquity. Traditionally tops were constructed of wood, sometimes with an iron tip, and would be set in motion by aid of a string or rope coiled around its axis which, when pulled quickly, caused a rapid unwinding that would set the top in motion. Today they are often built of plastic, and modern materials and manufacturing processes allow tops to be constructed with such precise balance that they can be set in motion by a simple twist of the fingers and twirl of the wrist without need for string or rope.
The motion of a top is produced in the most simple forms by twirling the stem using the fingers. More sophisticated tops are spun by holding the axis firmly while pulling a string or twisting a stick or pushing an auger. In the kinds with an auger, an internal weight rotates, producing an overall circular motion. Some tops can be thrown, while firmly grasping a string that had been tightly wound around the stem, and the centrifugal force generated by the unwinding motion of the string will set them spinning upon touching ground.
The Standard Model of particle physics is a theory concerning the electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear interactions, as well as classifying all the subatomic particles known. It was developed throughout the latter half of the 20th century, as a collaborative effort of scientists around the world. The current formulation was finalized in the mid-1970s upon experimental confirmation of the existence of quarks. Since then, discoveries of the top quark (1995), the tau neutrino (2000), and more recently the Higgs boson (2012), have given further credence to the Standard Model. Because of its success in explaining a wide variety of experimental results, the Standard Model is sometimes regarded as a "theory of almost everything".
Although the Standard Model is believed to be theoretically self-consistent and has demonstrated huge and continued successes in providing experimental predictions, it does leave some phenomena unexplained and it falls short of being a complete theory of fundamental interactions. It does not incorporate the full theory of gravitation as described by general relativity, or account for the accelerating expansion of the universe (as possibly described by dark energy). The model does not contain any viable dark matter particle that possesses all of the required properties deduced from observational cosmology. It also does not incorporate neutrino oscillations (and their non-zero masses).

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and most complex experiment, at the cutting edge of High Energy Physics. Particle physicists use the LHC to study variations from the Standard Model and discover potential new laws of physics. 26-02-2015 | 15:00 | Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia "G. Galilei" - Aula "A. Rostagni" Dr. Luca Lista - I.N.F.N. - Sezione di Napoli The top quark was discovered about 20 years ago at the Tevatron. It is the heaviest particle in the Standard Model and, unlike lighter quarks, decays before forming composite states. This feature provides a unique opportunity to access directly the quark's properties by studying its decay products. Being the heaviest known particle, it has a very large coupling with the Higgs boson, and many new physics models foresee special signals involving top quarks. The results achieved at LHC on top physics reach and in many cases surpass the precision achieved at Tevatron and open a window on new physics searches in top-quark production.

Roberto Franceschini offered this talk on March 25th, 2015, as part of the IFIC Seminars. "Energy peaks and future progress on the top quark mass measurement" by Dr. Roberto Franceschini (CERN) Abstract: In this talk I will review recent experimental results on the measurement of top quark mass and their relation to open theoretical issues about the physics of the Standard Model and beyond. With the goal of getting a better understanding of these issues, I will present a class of new top quark mass measurement techniques. The proposed measurement determines the top quark mass from the position of the peak of the energy distribution of the top quark decay products (for instance bottom quark jets or hadrons). Preliminary results on the top quark mass determination from energy distributions...

What if we could find one single equation that explains every force in the universe? Dr. Michio Kaku explores how physicists may shrink the science of the Big Bang into an equation as small as Einstein's "e=mc^2." Rebecca Gonzalez Suarez University of Nebraska-Lincoln "It is not lonely at the top: studying the heaviest quark at the LHC"The top quark is the most massive elementary particle known. Due to this, it has unique properties. The top quark is deeply related to the Higgs boson and it is expected to play a role in many models of physics beyond the standard model. The measurement of its properties is a test of the standard model consistency. Luckily, top quarks are produced at an unprecedented rate at the LHC, known as a "top factory" already before operation. During the Run-1 of the LHC top physics started pushing the high precision regime, especially in top mass. Two months into Run-2, the first measurements of inclusive cross sections of top quark production were made public, establishing t...
