Get on the train and enjoy an unforgettable day of summer.
We are visiting the small offshore island
Enoshima and
Kamakura, the former capital of
Japan - around 50 kilometers in the south-west of
Tokyo.
0:00
It's a lovely
Sunday morning and the futuristic
Blue Line takes us to the heart of
Kanagawa prefecture -
Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan and famous for its
China Town and the new urban center Minatomirai 21. However we'll just transfer from the subway to the JR
Tōkaidō Line for
Ofuna. After changing once again, we get the pleasure of riding the
Shonan Monorail, a 6.6 kilometers long suspended monorail system which also includes two tunnels on its way to Shonan-Enoshima.
2:09
The beach isn't far anymore. Before moving on to Kamakura it is absolutely essential to visit Enoshima. The little offshore island is linked by a 600 meter-long bridge to the mainland. You can have a break at some nice restaurants or have a look at the Enoshima-jinja shrine. If you bring enough time with you there is even a recommendable botanical garden and his observation tower to get some beautiful views of the
Sagami Bay coastline and also of
Mount Fuji (only with clear weather conditions).
Enoshima is also famous as an island for lovers as they can put a Ema (small wooden plaques on which you can write a prayer or wishes) on a big tree.
4:27
Time is always going very fast in Japan. For visiting Kamakura before it's gonna be too late we are taking one of the well-known "
Enoden" trains (Enoshima Dentetsu), a charming old railway line along the coast. The often historical trains are running every 12 minutes on the single-track route, so that it's possible to have some short stops to enjoy the varied landscape with mountains, forest and an endless beach. One of those stops is just at the station "Kamakura-koko-mae" which is a famous place in
Japanese animes and movies as it features an unlimited view of the
Pacific Ocean - what a romantic location to wait for a train.
7:32
It's time to say good bye to Enoshima.
Although the whole trip is pure fight against the running time we are traveling without any haste. If you make a short break at Gokurakuji, you can find some real-life-places of the anime Elfenlied which takes place in this area.
To have a look at the Buddhist
Kōtoku-in temple with his
Great Buddha bronze statue we have to leave at the station "Hase" (Hase is also the
German word for rabbit^^). Even with masses of tourists and day-tripper the inspiring atmosphere of this place is amazing. Not far away you can find the
Hase-dera temple. It features one of the largest wooden
Kannon statues in Japan and allows you to have a beautiful view of Kamakura and the
Miura Peninsula.
This amazing day went surely too fast.
Finally we're taking an Enoden train to the terminus in Kamakura where we change to the JR
Yokosuka Line. When the train arrives at Yokohama again, it will be already dark.
Thank you very much for watching! :)

Odakyu Group offers a free pass ticket which includes the way from Tokyo (
Shinjuku) to Katase-Enoshima and unlimited use of the Enoden trains.
But for rail-enthusiasts and those people who love to ride some more diversified routes (me included) this shown trip could be also a good solution for one day.
Our round-trip goes from
Azamino via Yokohama, Ofuna and Enoshima to Kamakura, but you can also get from Tokyo to Yokohama directly by using the JR Shonan Shinjuku or Tokaido
Lines.
This trip includes many different railway companies and types of transport - except for the Shonan Monorail (¥
300) your Pasmo/
Suica card is accepted everywhere else.
At the end of this trip we will have traveled about 90 kilometers for ¥
2150 in 12 hours.
