Archbishop Paul Gallagher was born January 23, 1954, in Liverpool, England. He studied at the city’s Jesuit St. Francis Xavier College, and felt the call to the priesthood in his teenage years, inspired by the words of Jesus, “What greater love has a man than to give his life for his friends.” After serving in parish ministry for several years, Fr. Ordained bishop in 2004, his episcopal motto is: “Walk humbly with God”. He went on to serve as nuncio to Burundi, Guatemala, and Australia, where he was at the time of his new appointment by Pope Francis in November 2014 as the Vatican’s “Foreign Mi...
International Conference «Dive Deeper: Explorations in Faith, Poetry and Culture» organized by Heythrop Institute for Religion and Society (London - November 24 and 25, 2016) Lecture - ENLARGING THE MIND Michael Paul Gallagher and the Imagination by Dr Nicolas Steeves, SJ (Department of Fundamental Theology - Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome) Abstract - Coming to theology from literature, M. P. Gallagher was deeply affected by massive (post)modern cultural tides that have turned unquestioning believers into comfortable agnostics. As a Jesuit and a disciple of Newman, he believed the imagination is key in enlarging minds and moving them beyond the surface of things towards the depth of the real, i.e. toward Christ. * The conference programme: http://www.heythrop.ac.uk/events/dive...
