Swedish hypercar company founder fangs new creation on public roads, explains how novel one-speed tranny will work
Koenigsegg has released an amateurish video of its all-new state-of-the-art plug-in petrol hybrid hypercar being road tested by its founder.
Driven on what look like roads near the hypercar-maker’s
Angelholm HQ in south-west
Sweden, the new Regera is put through its paces by none other than founder
Christian von Koenigsegg himself.
Unveiled last March at the
Geneva motor show, the Regera was one of the unexpected stars of the
Swiss show and, on paper, the Regera is almost as fascinating as it is jaw-dropping in the metal.
Combining an 820kW 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with three electric motors that, combined, produce 520kW, the Regera's total output is a mighty 1100kW/2000Nm.
Instead of opting for a conventional manual transmission, dual-clutch automatic or even a single-clutch automated manual, the Regera stunned show goers by channelling all that immense power to the rear wheels using a direct drive gearbox.
From standstill, the Regera uses both electric motors to ‘fill in’ the torque curves before the petrol engine joins in and takes over, hurtling the hypercar to its estimated 450km/h.
The video, filmed by one of the Swedish car-maker’s employees, shows von Koenigsegg explaining how the gearbox works in real life in what looks like a near production-ready mule that has a fully operational
TFT virtual dash and working portrait-mounted infotainment system
.
In the video, von Koenigsegg explains how the Regera has a locking hydraulic coupling between the crankshaft and propshaft, which is said to boost efficiency considerably over a conventional transmission.
The drive highlights how the system has been adapted to mimic an up- and down-shift by slipping the clutch for a more natural feel.
“
People might think it might be boring without gears” says von Koenigsegg, before booting the throttle and launching the Regera, “but there’s nothing boring about this.”
The hypercar boss says seamless performance delivery is what will win over potential owners.
Koenigsegg hasn’t released performance figures yet for the Regera, but it’s already calling it the world’s first ever ‘mega car’. Just 80 Regeras will be made
