Edwin Hubble was a man ahead of his time. For him, only astronomy really mattered. He took advantage of the opportunity given to him to use the most advanced telescope of his time to determine the truth behind the most distant clouds of light visible to Earth-based observers. His major discoveries changed our knowledge of our place in the universe forever. His determination that the universe is expanding served as the foundation for the Big Bang Theory, which proposes that the entire universe started as an intense energy bust occurring at a single moment of time. He made observations and drew intelligent assumptions from it. In the process, he founded a new discipline that has now contributed much to our knowledge the forces and the nature of matter that make up the universe.
Hubble’s work offered evidence that changed humankind’s perception of the universe. He wanted to find something unexpected, and he did so admirably. The impact of his declaration that the galaxies are hurtling away from each other, and that the space between them is expanding as time goes by can be felt until now. The proponents of the Big Bang Theory used Hubble’s observations in setting down their basic assumptions. Modern astrophysicists theorize that as a consequence of this expansion, it is possible that at a certain point, this instability will lead to a reversal of the expansion and the universe itself will end in a Big Crunch. Another theory presents the possibility of an unending expansion that will also lead to the death of the universe due to cooling and distension. In “A Brief History of Time,” Stephen Hawking, the preeminent British astrophysicist stated that Hubble’s discovery of the expanding universe was “one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century.”

Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 – September 28, 1953) was an American astronomer who played a crucial role in establishing the field of extragalactic astronomy and is generally regarded as one of the most important observational cosmologists of the 20th century. Hubble is known for showing that the recessional velocity of a galaxy increases with its distance from the earth, implying the Universe is expanding. Known as "Hubble's law", this relation had been discovered previously by Georges Lemaître, a Belgian priest/astronomer who published his work in a less visible journal. There is still much controversy surrounding the issue, and some argue that it should be referred to as "Lemaître's law", although this change has not taken hold in the astronomy community.
The metric expansion of space is the increase of the distance between two distant parts of the universe with time. It is an intrinsic expansion whereby the scale of space itself changes. This is different from other examples of expansions and explosions in that, as far as observations can ascertain, it is a property of the entirety of the universe rather than a phenomenon that can be contained and observed from the outside.

Before 1919, most scientists held that the universe was only as large as the Milky Way and that it was a constant size. Then, in 1919, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble — aided by a technologically advanced 100-inch telescope — was able to discern individual stars within what he believed to be a nebula, a fuzzy cloud of light composed of cosmic gases. After calculating that the distance to these stars from Earth was much further than the known reaches of the Milky Way, he concluded that the stars were part of a galaxy separate from our own. The idea that our galaxy was just one of many galaxies changed forever the way we view our place in the universe.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope launching into space, we will be taking time to recognize the man who the famous telescope is named after: Edwin Hubble.
Edwin Hubble is most widely known for being the astronomer that observed and detected the cepheid variable inside M31 The Great Nebula in Andromeda (now known as the Andromeda Galaxy), which was the evidence needed to show that the Universe we reside in is not a static one, but was expanding.
These observations were made at the Mount Wilson Observatory in the 1920s and heralded a new way for humanity to understand the Universe.
Please join +Tony Darnell, Dr.+Carol Christian and +Scott Lewis, who will be on location at the Carnegie Observatories office in Pasadena Calfornia, with Dr. John Mulchaey the acting director of the Carnegie Observatories as well as Nicholas (Nik) Arkimovich, a senior docent at the Mount Wilson Observatory. Together, they will bring fascinating insights into who Edwin Hubble was, as well as his remarkable achievements in astronomy.

Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 – September 28, 1953) was an American astronomer who is known for Hubble's law. He is incorrectly credited with the discovery of the existence of galaxies other than the Milky Way and galactic red shift- discoveries made by the astronomer Vesto Slipher in 1912. He popularized Vesto Slipher's discovery that the loss in frequency—the redshift—observed in the spectra of light from other galaxies increased in proportion to a particular galaxy's distance from Earth. This relationship which was based Slipher's data became known as Hubble's law. Vesto Slipher, the unsung hero of twentieth-century astronomy was the first to present his findings in a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in August 1914. Stephen Hawking wryly notes in his book the Universe in a Nutshell "Hubble heard the presentation". Due to Vesto Slipher's reserved and reticent personality, his discoveries are incorrectly credited to Hubble.
Hubble doubted the Doppler shift interpretation of the observed redshift that had been proposed earlier by Vesto Slipher, whose data he used, and that led to the theory of the metric expansion of space. He tended to believe the frequency of any beam of light could, by some so far unknown means, be diminished ever stronger, the longer the beam travels through space.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

http://www.myspace.com/acorvettes Before 1919, most scientists held that the universe was only as large as the Milky Way and that it was a constant size. Then, in 1919, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble — aided by a technologically advanced 100-inch telescope — was able to discern individual stars within what he believed to be a nebula, a fuzzy cloud of light composed of cosmic gases. After calculating that the distance to these stars from Earth was much further than the known reaches of the Milky Way, he concluded that the stars were part of a galaxy separate from our own. The idea that our galaxy was just one of many galaxies changed forever the way we view our place in the universe. -

As we approach the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope launching into space, we will be taking time to recognize the man who the famous telescope is named after: Edwin Hubble. Edwin Hubble is most widely known for being the astronomer that observed and detected the cepheid variable inside M31 The Great Nebula in Andromeda (now known as the Andromeda Galaxy), which was the evidence needed to show that the Universe we reside in is not a static one, but was expanding. These observations were made at the Mount Wilson Observatory in the 1920s and heralded a new way for humanity to understand the Universe. Please join +Tony Darnell, Dr.+Carol Christian and +Scott Lewis, who will be on location at the Carnegie Observatories office in Pasadena Calfornia, with Dr. John Mulchaey the acting director of the Carnegie Observatories as well as Nicholas (Nik) Arkimovich, a senior docent at the Mount Wilson Observatory. Then, in 1919, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble — aided by a technologically advanced 100-inch telescope — was able to discern individual stars within what he believed to be a nebula, a fuzzy cloud of light composed of cosmic gases. After calculating that the distance to these stars from Earth was much further than the known reaches of the Milky Way, he concluded that the stars were part of a galaxy separate from our own. The idea that our galaxy was just one of many galaxies changed forever the way we view our place in the universe.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope launching into space, we will be taking time to recognize the man who the famous telescope is named after: Edwin Hubble.
Edwin Hubble is most widely known for being the astronomer that observed and detected the cepheid variable inside M31 The Great Nebula in Andromeda (now known as the Andromeda Galaxy), which was the evidence needed to show that the Universe we reside in is not a static one, but was expanding.
These observations were made at the Mount Wilson Observatory in the 1920s and heralded a new way for humanity to understand the Universe.
Please join +Tony Darnell, Dr.+Carol Christian and +Scott Lewis, who will be on location at the Carnegie Observatories office in Pasadena Calfornia, with Dr. John Mulchaey the acting director of the Carnegie Observatories as well as Nicholas (Nik) Arkimovich, a senior docent at the Mount Wilson Observatory. Together, they will bring fascinating insights into who Edwin Hubble was, as well as his remarkable achievements in astronomy.

If the universe is expanding at a given rate
can we back calculate to find the date
at which time all the mass was compressed
13 billion years is the date that fits best
it was then that began the shot that rang
round the universe - we call it the big bang.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Medina attack or two other attacks in the kingdom on the same day — one near the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah and the other at a Shiite mosque in the east of the country. The bomber has been identified as 34-year-old Abdullah Qalzar Khan, an Interior Ministry statement said. He lived in the nearby Red Sea port city of Jiddah with “his wife and her parents.” The statement didn’t elaborate....
