A neutron bomb or officially known as one type of Enhanced Radiation Weapon is a low yield fission-fusion thermonuclear weapon (hydrogen bomb) in which the burst of neutrons generated by a fusion reaction is intentionally allowed to escape the weapon, rather than being absorbed by its other components. The weapon's radiation case, usually made from relatively thick uranium, lead or steel in a standard bomb, are instead made of as thin a material as possible to facilitate the greatest escape of fusion produced neutrons. The "usual" nuclear weapon yield—expressed as kilotons of TNT equivalent—is not a measure of a neutron weapon's destructive power. It refers only to the energy released (mostly heat and blast), and does not express the lethal effect of neutron radiation on living organisms.
Compared to a pure fission bomb with an identical explosive yield, a neutron bomb would emit about ten times the amount of neutron radiation. In a fission bomb at sea level, the total radiation pulse energy which is composed of both gamma rays and neutrons is approximately 5% of the entire energy released; in the neutron bomb it would be closer to 40%. Furthermore, the neutrons emitted by a neutron bomb have a much higher average energy level (close to 14 MeV) than those released during a fission reaction (1–2 MeV). Technically speaking, all low yield nuclear weapons are radiation weapons, that is including the non-enhanced variant. Up to about 10 kilotons in yield, all nuclear weapons have prompt neutron radiation as their most far reaching lethal component, after which point the lethal blast and thermal effects radius begins to out-range the lethal ionizing radiation radius. Enhanced radiation weapons also fall into this same yield range and simply enhance the intensity and range of the neutron dose for a given yield https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTE_Eshm2xw

World’s MOST POWERFUL GUN ever fired! 15 kiloton NUCLEAR SUPER CANNON! (One of a kind!) (Video includes real nuclear explosion footage.)
This video contains exclusive and extraordinary footage of the legendary M65 Atomic Cannon - the most powerful gun ever!
Developed by the United States of America in the early 1950s, this remarkable artillery piece was capable of firing a 15 kiloton nuclear warhead – about the same size as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima – a distance of 7 miles.
This remarkable cold war super weapon was deployed to Europe and Korea, yet was never used in active combat.
Indeed it was fired only once, at the Nevada Test Site, on May 25, 1953 at 8:30am.
The superb music -- called "Virtutes Vocis" -- was composed by Mr. Kevin MacLeod:

IMPENETRABLE RUSSIAN TANK ARMOUR STANDS UP TO EXAMINATION
"Claims that the armour of Russian tanks is effectively impenetrable, made on the basis of test carried out in Germany (see IDR 7/1996, p.15), have been supported by comments made following tests in the US.
"Speaking at a conference on Future Armoured Warfare in London in May, IDR's Pentagon correspondent Leland Ness explained that US tests involved firing trials of Russian-built T-72 tanks fitted with Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour (ERA). In contrast to the original, or 'light', type of ERA which is effective only against shaped charge jets, the 'heavy' Kontakt-5 ERA is also effective against the long-rod penetrators of APFSDS tank gun projectiles.
"When fitted to T-72 tanks, the 'heavy' ERA made them immune to the DU penetrators of M829 APFSDS, fired by the 120 mm guns of the US M1 Abrams tanks, which are among the most formidable of current tank gun projectiles.

Dead Space is set in 2508. Earth has been through an extinction-level event, caused by rapacious and unsustainable use of resources. The remaining humans realized that the only way to gain the resources to survive would be to search new planets for resources. That's where the Concordance Extraction Corporation comes in. At a time of near-desperation, the CEC invented the ship that would eventually save all of humanity: The USG Ishimura.
The USG Ishimura was a ship designed for the new resource-gathering practice: Planetcracking. The Ishimura's job was to mine other planets for their most rare and most valuable resources to take back to Earth. Even though there have been subsequent Planetcrackers (a small fleet now exists), the Ishimura remains the iconic symbol of mankind's will to survive, even after all these decades. Thanks to Planetcracking, mankind is now thriving again, and resources are plentiful. By the time of the game, the Ishimura has performed 34 successful planetcracks, and is now in the process of beginning its 35th. However, the events that take place during this planet crack are events that threaten the very survival of mankind.

Episode 05: "5 Kiloton Lake" - Call for Expedition!
Yuriev.TV (Expeditionary Production) is setting up an expedition to the atomic lakes of Kazakhstan populated by vast variety of mutated biological organisms. We are inviting scientists, specializing in studies of DNA, and Evolutionary Biology and other, to join us on this expedition.
Background information for our project:
During 1950 - 1990 in Kazakhstan on the nuclear tests site Semipalatinsk-21 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semipalatinsk_Test_Site), were made about 600 nuclear explosions, including underground "peaceful tests" which were used to create lakes.
Since late 60's experimental biological station on the atomic lake "Chagan" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagan_(nuclear_test), held a series of experiments to investigate the residual effects of radiation on living organisms. For several years, the lake was inhabited by 36 species of fish, collected around the world (including the Amazonian piranhas), 27 species of mollusks, 32 species of amphibians, 11 reptiles, 8 species of mammals, 42 species of invertebrates and almost 150 species of plants, including algae and etc. During the experiments, about 90% of the organisms died-out. Survivors were observed abnormal number of mutations and changes in the appearance of the offspring (eg, freshwater crayfish is extremely increased in size).
In 1974 an experimental station was closed and later on abandoned. Ever since these lakes were populated by constantly mutating flora and fauna. There are many legends and rumors regarding creatures existing down there, but no real facts. Due to poor economy in Kazakhstan and Russia, these lakes were not yet researched.
Depth of these radioactive lakes, ranges anywhere from 50 to 500 meters down, and spread into a network of underwater caves. Two of the lakes are available for your preview at:
- Balapan (Chagan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjVl8A8NMMs
- Unnamed (5KT) lake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEuuTbjvOXU
We are looking for scientists interested in participation. To join our resources group, please use next link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/yurievtv.expedition.atomic.lakes

My home: Nuclear Base. Episode 05: "5 Kiloton Lake"
At about 10 miles, away from the epicenter, the grass is greener, birds are singing, horses, in the distance are grazing together with camels - It's an idyllic picture. But yet, we are trying to walk around very carefully, not to lift any rocks, or just step too hard. The ground, around us, is still highly radioactive.
At about 11 miles away from the epicenter, we found a very nice looking lake, made with about 5 kilotons of TNT. It should be swimmable, of course radioactive, but still - without terrible premature death. It is about 600 ft deep, exact numbers are unknown, as there are caves at the bottom, going deep down into the earth...
According to the locals, sometimes shadows of about 10 meters in length pass at the depth. Locals believe it's some type of a fish. But no one tried to catch it yet...
For the last 50 years, these sort of lakes, contained constantly mutated creatures. How these biological organisms changed, and adapted, was never researched... We will try to investigate, what's down there, during our next expedition.
For now, our 45 minutes of radiation safety, are over.

0800019 - Operation Redwing - 1956 - 25:45 - Black&White; - Operation Redwing, a 17-test nuclear weapons series, was conducted at the Pacific Proving Ground between May 4 and July 21, 1956. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) tested high-yield thermonuclear devices that could not be tested at the Nevada Test Site.
Over 10,000 military personnel and civilian employees of the AEC and the Department of Defense participated in these nuclear tests. The LACROSSE and CHEROKEE tests were observed from aboard the USS Mt. McKinley by 15 American press, radio and television reporters. These were the first uncleared U.S. civilians in ten years to observe an American nuclear test in the Pacific.
The AEC's progress in miniaturization of warheads had accelerated to where the equivalent of the 90-ton weight of the MIKE device in Operation Ivy could now be dropped from a bomber. Operation Redwing also further advanced the AEC's designs of nuclear weapons that would produce reduced fallout and provided new information for the design of nuclear warheads for missiles.
Complete weapons systems were exposed to blast effects in Operation Redwing, and a fallout computer was successfully used for the first time. The series included the CHEROKEE test, the first airdrop by U.S. of a thermonuclear weapon.
Tests comprising the 1956 Operation Redwing were as follows:
LACROSSE, May 4, Enewetak (Runit Island), surface, weapons related, 40 kilotons (kt)
CHEROKEE, May 20, Bikini (near Nam Island), airdrop, weapons related, 3.8 megatons (Mt)
(allowed scientists to make some unique measurements)
ZUNI, May 27, Bikini (Eneman Island), surface, weapons related, 3.5 Mt
YUMA, May 27, Enewetak (Aomon Island), tower, weapons related, 190 tons
ERIE, May 30, Enewetak (Runit Island), tower, weapons related, 14.9 kt
SEMINOLE, June 6, Enewetak (Boken Island), surface, weapons related, 13.7 kt
FLATHEAD, June 11, Bikini (off Iroij Island), barge, weapons related, 365 kt
BLACKFOOT, June 11, Enewetak (Runit Island), tower, weapons related, 8 kt
KICKAPOO, June 13, Enewetak (Aomon Island), tower, weapons related, 1.49 kt
OSAGE, June 16, Enewetak (near Runit Island), airdrop, weapons related, 1.7 kt
INCA, June 21, Enewetak ( Lujor Island), tower, weapons related, 15.2 kt
DAKOTA, June 25, Bikini (off Iroij Island), barge, weapons related, 1.1 Mt
MOHAWK, July 2, Enewetak (Eleleron Island), tower, weapons related, 360 kt
APACHE, July 8, Enewetak (off Dridrilbwij Island), barge, weapons related, 1.85 Mt
NAVAJO, July 10, Bikini (off Iroij Island), barge, weapons related, 4.5 Mt
TEWA, July 20, Bikini (off Nam Island), barge, weapons related, 5 Mt

Indy speedway was ground zero for 10 kiloton nuclear attack days before NASCAR's sprint cup race.
WISH-TV posted a story on its website today announcing a large scale emergency response drill that is being conducted this week, code named Vibrant Response 2014, that involves agencies from more than 28 states, the largest ever exercise conducted in North America. To what emergency is the practice drill in response? The explosion of a nuclear bomb in Speedway, home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where this weekend's NASCAR Brickyard 400 race is being run.
This week agencies from more than 28 states are practicing for a large scale emergency in Indianapolis. The exercise, Vibrant Response 2014, is the largest exercise ever conducted in North America. Local, state and federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Homeland Security are simulating their response to a nuclear bomb hitting Speedway.
Officials are acting through every scenario they would encounter should a nuclear bomb ever hit Indianapolis.
Amazing that everyone ridiculed Linda for her documenting the

wn.com/Indy Speedway Was Ground Zero For 10 Kiloton Nuclear Attack Days Before Nascar's Sprint Cup Race.

DTRA's history begins with the Manhattan Project, which then split into the Atomic Energy Commission and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project after WWII. The AFSWP became the Defense Atomic Support Agency in 1959; DASA became the Defense Nuclear Agency in 1971; DNA became the Defense Special Weapons Agency in 1996, and was one of the four agencies/programs that combined in 1998 to form the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Operation Hardtack I consisted of 35 nuclear tests conducted at the Pacific Proving Ground between April 28 and August 18, 1958. These tests included balloon, surface, barge, underwater, and rocket-borne high-altitude tests. The first test, YUCCA, was a nuclear device attached to a helium balloon launched from the USS Boxer near Enewetak Atoll.
Hardtack I consisted of three portions; the first was the development of nuclear weapons. This was a continuation of the type of testing conducted at Enewetak and Bikini during the early and mid-1950s. In these tests, the weapons development laboratories, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and the University of California Radiation Laboratory, detonated their experimental devices, while the Department of Defense (DoD) provided support and conducted experiments that did not interfere with Atomic Energy Commission activities.
The second portion, sponsored by DoD, consisted of the underwater tests WAHOO and UMBRELLA. WAHOO was detonated in the open ocean and UMBRELLA in the lagoon at Enewetak. The purpose of these tests was to improve the understanding of the effects of underwater explosions on Navy ships and material. These were continuations of earlier underwater testing that included BAKER in Crossroads at Bikini in 1946 and WIGWAM off the U.S. West Coast in 1955.
The DoD also sponsored the third portion, addressing the military problems of air-borne nuclear weapon defense. Three high-altitude tests featured rocket-borne TEAK and ORANGE at Johnston Island and balloon-hoisted YUCCA between Enewetak and Bikini.
Two major aspects of Hardtack I’s experimental program were the development of the weapons themselves and the measurement of the explosive and radiation effects. Also, since the development of a nuclear armed fleet ballistic missile was on a fast track, a portion of Hardtack I was devoted to testing the warhead for the Polaris missile.
The tests comprising the 1958 Operation Hardtack I were as follows:

"Project Sedan, a 100-kiloton nuclear cratering detonation, recently executed as part of the Atomic Energy Commission's Plowshare Program. Plowshare envisages many uses for nuclear explosives..." A test of a nuclear weapon for simple dirt excavation purposes.
Public domain film from the US Government, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

Storax Sedan was a shallow underground nuclear test conducted in Area 10 of Yucca Flat at the Nevada National Security Site on 6 July 1962 as part of Operation Plowshare, a program to investigate the use of nuclear weapons for mining, cratering, and other civilian purposes. The radioactive fallout from the test contaminated more US residents than any other nuclear test. The Sedan Crater is the largest man-made crater in the United States, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places...
Sedan was a thermonuclear device with a fission yield less than 30% and a fusion yield about 70%. The timing of the test put it within the Operation Storax fiscal year, but Sedan was functionally part of Operation Plowshare, and the test protocol was sponsored and conducted by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory with minimal involvement by the United States Department of Defense. The explosive device was lowered into a shaft drilled into the desert alluvium 194 m (636 ft) deep. The fusion-fission blast had a yield equivalent to 104 kilotons of TNT (435 terajoules) and lifted a dome of earth 90 m (300 ft) above the desert floor before it vented at three seconds after detonation, exploding upward and outward displacing more than 11,000,000 t (11,000,000 long tons; 12,000,000 short tons) of soil. The resulting crater is 100 m (330 ft) deep with a diameter of about 390 m (1,280 ft). A circular area of the desert floor five miles across was obscured by fast-expanding dust clouds moving out horizontally from the base surge, akin to pyroclastic surge. The blast caused seismic waves equivalent to an earthquake of 4.75 on the Richter scale. The radiation level on the crater lip at 1 hour after burst was 500 R per hour (130 mC/(kg·h)).
Within 7 months of the excavation, the bottom of the crater could be safely walked upon with no protective clothing.
The Sedan shot resulted in a radioactive cloud that separated into two plumes, rising to 3.0 km and 4.9 km (10,000 ft and 16,000 ft). The two plumes headed northeast and then east in roughly parallel paths towards the Atlantic Ocean. Nuclear fallout was dropped along the way, narrowly dispersed in a relatively small number of United States counties. Detected radioactivity was especially high in eight counties in Iowa and one county each in Nebraska, South Dakota and Illinois. Most heavily affected counties were Howard, Mitchell and Worth counties in Iowa, as well as Washabaugh County in South Dakota, an area that has since been incorporated into Jackson County and is wholly within Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. These four counties measured maximum levels higher than 6,000 microcuries per square meter (220 MBq/m2).
Of all the nuclear tests conducted in the USA, Sedan ranked highest in overall activity of radionuclides in fallout...
Conclusions
The Plowshare project developed the Sedan test in order to determine the feasibility of using nuclear detonations to quickly and economically excavate large amounts of earth and rock. Proposed applications included the creation of harbors, canals, open pit mines, railroad and highway cuts through mountainous terrain and the construction of dams. Assessment of the full effects of the Sedan shot showed that the radioactive fallout from such uses would be extensive. Public concerns about the health effects and a lack of political support eventually led to abandonment of the concept. No such nuclear excavation has since been undertaken by the US, though the Soviet Union continued to pursue the concept through their program Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy, particularly with their 140 kiloton Chagan (nuclear test), which created an artificial lake reservoir(see Lake Chagan)...
