A gunman has been shot dead by off-duty police officers after some sort of altercation at the Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina, officials say.
The incident began at about 2 p.m. ET on Thursday when an argument started inside the mall between two groups of people. "There was one armed subject that was shot during the altercation and he was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement.
The sounds of gunfire prompted hundreds of terrified shoppers to flee from the mall or to seek cover in stores. Witnesses reported hearing at least seven gunshots being fired, but it was not immediately clear how many - if any - of the shots were fired by the armed subject. None of the officers were injured.
The Mecklenburg EMS Agency (Medic) reported that one person had been killed and three people had been transported from the scene to area hospitals, including a victim who had suffered a leg injury, a woman who had gone into labor, and a patient who was suffering from an asthma attack. It was not immediately clear whether the fatality was the gunman or a victim.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at Northlake Mall on Christmas Eve.
The call of a shooting at the mall, located on Northlake Drive came in at 2:10 p.m. Thursday near the entrance of Journey's shoe store.
Police said evidence gathered at the scene is indicating that two groups of people who had a history of feuding encountered each other inside the mall and got in to an altercation.
Police said the altercation escalated when Daquan Antonio Westbrook fired a gun.
Westbrook,18, was a rapper who performed as "Donkey Cartel" and a father-to-be according to a friend of the family.
While working off-duty inside the mall, police Officer Thomas Ferguson heard multiple shots and rushed to the scene where he encountered Westbrook.
According to witnesses, Westbrook turned and pointed his gun at the officer, who fired his service weapon.
Additional officers who were working off-duty in the mall arrived and immediately began rendering aid to Westbrook.
Medics later pronounced Westrbook dead at the scene.

We began our adventure from the North lake trailhead. We climbed up to Piute pass through some amazing fall color. From the pass we headed cross country to summit Mt. Emerson before making our first camp at the very impressive Muriel lake. The snow flurries and distant thunder made for a pleasant first evening. The next morning we packed up our first camp at Muriel lake and headed across Humphreys basin. We enjoyed a light snowfall in the morning which mostly cleared before arriving at Tomahawk lake to setup our second camp. The view of Mt. Humphreys was really amazing from there. It just dominates. Just after we got our tents setup a light rainstorm came through. As that started to clear we headed out to climb Pilot Knob. After a bit more snow the weather cleared perfectly for us to summit, becoming cloudy and sprinkling lightly on our return back to our camp. After a great night at Tomahawk lake, we packed up camp and headed down the very impressive Piute canyon. We met the JMT and followed it towards Muir Trail Ranch. We made our third camp by the banks of the South fork San Joaquin river and spent the evening trout fishing and soaking at Blayney hot springs. The weather was perfect all day, it was a great day to be in the Sierra. Feeling nice and refreshed from our evening at the hot springs, we headed up the South fork San Joaquin river entering Kings Canyon national park. Then we began our climb up into Evolution valley and enjoyed swimming and fishing at the many cascading waterfalls along the way. Once we reached the valley we hiked through beautiful Evolution meadow and McClure meadow where we made our fourth camp. After a cold night at McClure meadow we packed up camp and headed up into Evolution basin. It was a beautiful clear sunny day, and the climb up seemed like nothing. We arrived at Sapphire lake early in the day, got our camp set up and began our climb to the summit of Mt. Spencer. The climb up was fairly easy and the views of Evolution basin were incredible! The next morning we left Sapphire lake and headed up through Evolution basin to Muir pass. After a small break in the Muir hut, it was a great day for some peak bagging so i decided to climb Mt. Solomons and Black Giant! Both climbs were steep but relatively easy. The views were amazing of course!! After my epic peak bagging adventure we dropped down into the incredible LeConte canyon and made our 6th camp at beautiful Little Pete meadow. It was a kinda long but truly amazing day, the kind i live for. The next day we began our climb out of LeConte canyon and into Dusy basin. We made our camp early at one of the beautiful lakes in the upper part of the basin. From there i decided to make the climb up to Columbine peak for some awesome views over the area. The climb up and down was a little more technical than i had expected but it was nothing that i couldn't easily handle. I got back to camp and we enjoyed a nice sunset on the Palisades for our final evening of the trip! At night a storm came in and dropped 2 inches of snow on us in the Dusy basin. When we woke up everything looked awesome!! We packed up our camp and headed for Bishop pass. We arrived at the pass and the clouds had cleared significantly, so we decided to make the climb up to Mt.Agassiz(13,893'), the tallest and the last peak of the trip. We summited with just enough time to enjoy the incredible views before the clouds moved back in and began snowing on us again. The snow and fog made the climb down quite adventurous and it continued to snow the rest of the way out to South lake, the final destination of this epic trip. "Moonwalker" features three analog jams born out of live sessions -- three beautiful synth cuts for home and club listening that instantly bring parallels to early Isolee material; melodic and heavy enough to whip up a frenzy on the dancefloor.
"Marlborol Noir" kicks off proceedings, chugging away effortlessly with it's ascending and descending synth riffs, the spawn of a long imprpvised session in the studio. "Suomi Kutsuu" opens the b-side emphatically, a heavy galloping rhythm and an ascending synth riff dominating from the off. It's six minutes of pure analog battle gear. Rounding off the EP, title track "Moonwalker" is a pacy mix of arpeggiated synths, intricate drum programing and eerie melodies that intertwine perfectly with the bass-heavy syncopated kick drum.

We arrived at the pass and the clouds had cleared significantly, so we decided to make the climb up to Mt.Agassiz(13,893'), the tallest and the last peak of the trip. We summited with just enough time to enjoy the incredible views before the clouds moved back in and began snowing on us again. The snow and fog made the climb down quite adventurous and it continued to snow the rest of the way out to South lake, the final destination of this epic trip. We began our adventure from the North lake trailhead. We climbed up to Piute pass through some amazing fall color. From the pass we headed cross country to summit Mt. Emerson before making our first camp at the very impressive Muriel lake. The snow flurries and distant thunder made for a pleasant first evening. The next morning we packed up our first camp at Muriel lake and headed across Humphreys basin. We enjoyed a light snowfall in the morning which mostly cleared before arriving at Tomahawk lake to setup our second camp. The view of Mt. Humphreys was really amazing from there. It just dominates. A gunman has been shot dead by off-duty police officers after some sort of altercation at the Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina, officials say.
The incident began at about 2 p.m. ET on Thursday when an argument started inside the mall between two groups of people. "There was one armed subject that was shot during the altercation and he was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement.
The sounds of gunfire prompted hundreds of terrified shoppers to flee from the mall or to seek cover in stores. Witnesses reported hearing at least seven gunshots being fired, but it was not immediately clear how many - if any - of the shots were fired by the armed subject. None of the officers were injured.
The Mecklenburg EMS Agency (Medic) reported that one person had been killed and three people had been transported from the scene to area hospitals, including a victim who had suffered a leg injury, a woman who had gone into labor, and a patient who was suffering from an asthma attack. It was not immediately clear whether the fatality was the gunman or a victim.

While working off-duty inside the mall, police Officer Thomas Ferguson heard multiple shots and rushed to the scene where he encountered Westbrook.
According to witnesses, Westbrook turned and pointed his gun at the officer, who fired his service weapon.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at Northlake Mall on Christmas Eve.
The call of a shooting at the mall, located on Northlake Drive came in at 2:10 p.m. Thursday near the entrance of Journey's shoe store.
Police said evidence gathered at the scene is indicating that two groups of people who had a history of feuding encountered each other inside the mall and got in to an altercation.
Police said the altercation escalated when Daquan Antonio Westbrook fired a gun.
Westbrook,18, was a rapper who performed as "Donkey Cartel" and a father-to-be according to a friend of the family.
While working off-duty inside the mall, police Officer Thomas Ferguson heard multiple shots and rushed to the scene where he encountered Westbrook.
According to witnesses, Westbrook turned and pointed his gun at the officer, who fired his service weapon.

We began our adventure from the North lake trailhead. We climbed up to Piute pass through some amazing fall color. From the pass we headed cross country to summit Mt. Emerson before making our first camp at the very impressive Muriel lake. The snow flurries and distant thunder made for a pleasant first evening. The next morning we packed up our first camp at Muriel lake and headed across Humphreys basin. We enjoyed a light snowfall in the morning which mostly cleared before arriving at Tomahawk lake to setup our second camp. The view of Mt. Humphreys was really amazing from there. It just dominates. Just after we got our tents setup a light rainstorm came through. As that started to clear we headed out to climb Pilot Knob. After a bit more snow the weather cleared perfectly for us to summit, becoming cloudy and sprinkling lightly on our return back to our camp. After a great night at Tomahawk lake, we packed up camp and headed down the very impressive Piute canyon. We met the JMT and followed it towards Muir Trail Ranch. We made our third camp by the banks of the South fork San Joaquin river and spent the evening trout fishing and soaking at Blayney hot springs. The weather was perfect all day, it was a great day to be in the Sierra. Feeling nice and refreshed from our evening at the hot springs, we headed up the South fork San Joaquin river entering Kings Canyon national park. Then we began our climb up into Evolution valley and enjoyed swimming and fishing at the many cascading waterfalls along the way. Once we reached the valley we hiked through beautiful Evolution meadow and McClure meadow where we made our fourth camp. After a cold night at McClure meadow we packed up camp and headed up into Evolution basin. It was a beautiful clear sunny day, and the climb up seemed like nothing. We arrived at Sapphire lake early in the day, got our camp set up and began our climb to the summit of Mt. Spencer. The climb up was fairly easy and the views of Evolution basin were incredible! The next morning we left Sapphire lake and headed up through Evolution basin to Muir pass. After a small break in the Muir hut, it was a great day for some peak bagging so i decided to climb Mt. Solomons and Black Giant! Both climbs were steep but relatively easy. The views were amazing of course!! After my epic peak bagging adventure we dropped down into the incredible LeConte canyon and made our 6th camp at beautiful Little Pete meadow. It was a kinda long but truly amazing day, the kind i live for. The next day we began our climb out of LeConte canyon and into Dusy basin. We made our camp early at one of the beautiful lakes in the upper part of the basin. From there i decided to make the climb up to Columbine peak for some awesome views over the area. The climb up and down was a little more technical than i had expected but it was nothing that i couldn't easily handle. I got back to camp and we enjoyed a nice sunset on the Palisades for our final evening of the trip! At night a storm came in and dropped 2 inches of snow on us in the Dusy basin. When we woke up everything looked awesome!! We packed up our camp and headed for Bishop pass. We arrived at the pass and the clouds had cleared significantly, so we decided to make the climb up to Mt.Agassiz(13,893'), the tallest and the last peak of the trip. We summited with just enough time to enjoy the incredible views before the clouds moved back in and began snowing on us again. The snow and fog made the climb down quite adventurous and it continued to snow the rest of the way out to South lake, the final destination of this epic trip. "Moonwalker" features three analog jams born out of live sessions -- three beautiful synth cuts for home and club listening that instantly bring parallels to early Isolee material; melodic and heavy enough to whip up a frenzy on the dancefloor.
"Marlborol Noir" kicks off proceedings, chugging away effortlessly with it's ascending and descending synth riffs, the spawn of a long imprpvised session in the studio. "Suomi Kutsuu" opens the b-side emphatically, a heavy galloping rhythm and an ascending synth riff dominating from the off. It's six minutes of pure analog battle gear. Rounding off the EP, title track "Moonwalker" is a pacy mix of arpeggiated synths, intricate drum programing and eerie melodies that intertwine perfectly with the bass-heavy syncopated kick drum.
