THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS -1858 - Tom Roush
When doing old songs, I try my best to be historically accurate. I did however use the word 'soldier' instead of 'darky' simply because that is the way that it was sung by soldiers during the Civil War.. 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' was written as a minstrel song that was enjoyed in both North and South. It eventually became somewhat of an 'anthem' for the south. This song can be found on my CD - '

This song can be found on my CD - 'Americana' at: http://tomroush.us/Americana.htm or iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/americana/id957955758

Franz Boas was the first distinguished social scientist in the United States to challenge the prevailing concept of racial inferiority. He actively campaigned on behalf of black people in America in the early part of the 20th century. Considered the founding father of American anthropology, Boas taught at Columbia University for fifty years, encouraging his students to follow his example by actually working in the field. Among those who did so was Margaret Mead.
In the 1980s, Bruce Dakowski and Andre Singer collaborated on a series of video documentary portraits intended to introduce six founders of "social anthropology." The project was sponsored and supported by the Royal Anthropological Institute. The six selected "pioneers" were Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer (1860-1929), William Rivers (1864-1922), Franz Boas (1858-1942), Bronislaw Malinowski (1884-1942), Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973), and Margaret Mead (1901-1978).
