The New York Times (sometimes abbreviated to NYT) is an American daily newspaper, founded and continuously published in New York City since September 18, 1851, by the New York Times Company. It has won 117 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other news organization.
The paper's print version has the second-largest circulation, behind The Wall Street Journal, and the largest circulation among the metropolitan newspapers in the United States. It is ranked 39th in the world by circulation. Following industry trends, its weekday circulation has fallen to fewer than one million daily since 1990. Nicknamed for years as "The Gray Lady", The New York Times has long been regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record". It is owned by The New York Times Company. Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr. – whose family (Ochs-Sulzberger) has controlled the paper for five generations, since 1896 – is both the paper's publisher and the company's chairman. Its international version, formerly the International Herald Tribune, is now called the International New York Times.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
York (i/ˈjɔːrk/) is a historic walled city at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England, and is the traditional county town of Yorkshire to which it gives its name. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events in England throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities making it a popular tourist destination for millions.
The city was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD. It became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and later of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jórvík. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained.
In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.

New York Court of Appeals 2/09/2005, C-SPAN Product ID: 185516-1 From C-SPAN's Description: The New York Court of Appeals heard oral argument in the matter of The New York Times Company v. City of New York Fire Department. The New York Times filed a state Freedom of Information Law request in January 2002 to receive access to transcripts of radio calls, 911 calls, and 500 FDNY oral histories regarding the September 11th attacks. The FDNY denied the request, saying these materials are not public record - and in addition that they will be used in the investigation and prosecution of accused September 11 hijacker Zacarias Moussaoui. The New York Times, supported by nine September 11 family members, appealed the denial and won a split decision. They are appealing to the state high co...

For over 164 years, The New York Times newspaper has been a principal source of news and editorial comment for readers in this country and around the world. For the past 25 years, The Times Company has developed its various digital platforms to the extent that 60 million readers interact with The Times on a monthly basis. The Times has more than two million paying subscribers, almost half of whom are “pure digital” – a noteworthy fact considering that the service began offering digital subscriptions only four years ago. Today, the Times remains a premier source of news and information and has won 117 Pulitzer Prizes, including three in 2015 alone. Nevertheless, in an era when online communications giants measure their revenue in many billions, questions inevitably arise about the sustainab...

March 9, 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the US Supreme Court's landmark decision on the freedom of the press in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. In the decision, the Supreme Court held that the First Amendment protects reports about public officials -- even false ones -- unless they have been made with actual malice (with knowledge that they are false or in reckless disregard of their truth or falsity). This case allowed much of the press reports on civil rights in the South to move forward. Fifty years later, we convened to consider the implications and lasting significance of the Supreme Court's decision. Featuring: Judge Robert Sack, United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; Treatise author, Sack on Defamation (4th edition) Burt Neuborne, Inez Milholland Professor of ...

A new book, "The Progeny: Justice William J. Brennan's Fight to Preserve the Legacy of New York Times v. Sullivan," tells the story of the late justice's struggle to persuade a unanimous court to embrace the First Amendment doctrine established in this landmark case on freedom of the press. Lucy Dalglish, dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, will talk with co-authors Lee Levine and Stephen Wermiel about the book, which draws from Brennan's previously unreported papers and interviews with Wermiel. The book explores the collegial and sometimes contentious exchanges between just...

Gelb began working the night shift at The Times as a copy boy in 1944. He ascended through the ranks, holding several titles in many different departments. He supported the creation of the New York Shakespeare Festival by editorializing Joseph Papp's productions. He has edited a number of works such as "Great Lives of the Twentieth Century" (ISBN 978-0812916256). Gelb retired from The Times ...
