Welcome to Teracom's Online Course "POTS and the PSTN". This free online telecom training course lesson is the introduction to the course.
This is the first course in the CTNS Certification Package, a set of six courses plus Certified Telecommunications Network Specialist (CTNS) certification from the Telecommunications Certification Organization (TCO).
In this course, we'll understand the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), and Plain Ordinary Telephone Service (POTS). Understanding the fundamentals of this technology and network architecture is the starting point for understanding everything else.
If you want to jump right to learning about IP packet networks, Ethernet and MPLS services, that begins with the OSI model and its layers. In fact, The OSI Layers and Protocol Stacks is the first course of the four-course package that includes Certified IP Telecom Network Specialist (CIPTS) certification.
CTNS is the more complete training, six courses that begin with this one, plus wireless then the four CIPTS courses.
Overall goals
The overall goal of this course is to understand:
- How the physical telephone network is organized
- The characteristics of basic telephone service
- How calls are established end-to-end, and to
- Demystify common telephony jargon and buzzwords.

List of Lessons
Lesson 1 is the Introduction to the Course.
Lesson 2 is a brief history lesson, beginning with the invention of the telephone. This will establish the concept of local telephone companies, access circuits and inter-city transmission.
Next, we will understand the fundamentals of the PSTN: customer premise and Central Office, loops, trunks, circuit switching and understand how a telephone call is connected end-to-end.
Then we will understand how information is represented on the local loop using analog techniques in traditional telephony, and just what exactly we mean by analog.
Next is the question of fidelity: how faithfully the voice is reproduced at the far end, which is determined by the frequency bandwidth provided on the access, known as the voiceband. The lesson on the voiceband is available free.
The voiceband, loops, trunks and circuit-switching are all aspects of Plain Ordinary Telephone Service. We'll round out the discussion by understanding some of the other key aspects of POTS and related jargon and buzzwords like "twisted pair".
We will then look at an improvement on the address signalling mechanism for POTS that was called "touch tone", or more technically, DTMF.
Finally, we will understand in broad brushstrokes the control system for the telephone network, called SS7 in North America, and basic principles of call routing.

A revolution in wireless telecommunications began in the 1900s (decade) with pioneering developments in wireless radio communications by Nikola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi. Marconi won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 for his efforts. Other highly notable pioneering inventors and developers in the field of electrical and electronic telecommunications include Charles Wheatstone and Samuel Morse (telegraph), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Edwin Armstrong, and Lee de Forest (radio), as well as John Logie Baird and Philo Farnsworth (television).

This is the first course in the CTNS Certification Package, a set of six courses plus Certified Telecommunications Network Specialist (CTNS) certification from the Telecommunications Certification Organization (TCO).
In this course, we'll understand the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), and Plain Ordinary Telephone Service (POTS). Understanding the fundamentals of this technology and network architecture is the starting point for understanding everything else.
If you want to jump right to learning about IP packet networks, Ethernet and MPLS services, that begins with the OSI model and its layers. In fact, The OSI Layers and Protocol Stacks is the first course of the four-course package that includes Certified IP Telecom Network Specialist (CIPTS) certification.
CTNS is the more complete training, six courses that begin with this one, plus wireless then the four CIPTS courses.

The overall goal of this course is to understand:
- How the physical telephone network is organized
- The characteristics of basic telephone service
- How calls are established end-to-end, and to
- Demystify common telephony jargon and buzzwords.

List of Lessons
Lesson 1 is the Introduction to the Course.
Lesson 2 is a brief history lesson, beginning with the invention of the telephone. This will establish the concept of local telephone companies, access circuits and inter-city transmission.
Next, we will understand the fundamentals of the PSTN: customer premise and Central Office, loops, trunks, circuit switching and understand how a telephone call is connected end-to-end.
Then we will understand how information is represented on the local loop using analog techniques in traditional telephony, and just what exactly we mean by analog.
Next is the question of fidelity: how faithfully the voice is reproduced at the far end, which is determined by the frequency bandwidth provided on the access, known as the voiceband. The lesson on the voiceband is available free.
The voiceband, loops, trunks and circuit-switching are all aspects of Plain Ordinary Telephone Service. We'll round out the discussion by understanding some of the other key aspects of POTS and related jargon and buzzwords like "twisted pair".
We will then look at an improvement on the address signalling mechanism for POTS that was called "touch tone", or more technically, DTMF.
Finally, we will understand in broad brushstrokes the control system for the telephone network, called SS7 in North America, and basic principles of call routing.

Practici comerciale înşelătoare
Art. 5.
- Practicile comerciale înşelătoare pot fi acţiuni înşelătoare sau omisiuni înşelătoare.
Art. 6.
(1)
O practică comercială este considerată ca fiind acţiune înşelătoare dacă aceasta conţine informaţii
false sau, în orice situaţie, inclusiv în prezentarea generală, induce în eroare sau este susceptibilă să inducă în
eroare consumatorul mediu, astfel încât, în ambele ipoteze, fie îl determină, fie este susceptibilă a-l determina pe
consumator să ia o decizie de tranzacţionare pe care altfel nu ar fi luat-o, chiar dacă informaţiile sunt, în fapt,
corecte în raport cu unul sau mai multe dintre următoarele elemente:
a)
existenţa sau natura produsului;
b)
principalele caracteristici ale produsului, cum ar fi: disponibilitatea, avantajele, riscurile, fabricarea, compoziţia,
accesoriile, asistenţa acordată după vânzare şi instrumentarea reclamaţiilor, modul şi data fabricaţiei sau prestării,
livrarea, capacitatea de a corespunde scopului, utilizarea, cantitatea, specificaţiile, originea geografică sau
comercială, rezultatele care se pot obţine din utilizarea sa, rezultatele şi caracteristicile esenţiale ale testelor sau
controalelor efectuate asupra produsului;
c)
perioada pentru care comerciantul se angajează, motivele utilizării practicii comerciale şi natura desfăşurării
vânzării, precum şi toate declaraţiile sau toate simbolurile care ar induce o legătură între produs sau comerciant şi o
sponsorizare sau o aprobare, direct ori indirect;
d)
preţul sau modul de calcul al preţului ori existenţa unui avantaj specific al preţului;
f)
natura, competenţele şi drepturile comerciantului sau ale reprezentantului său, cum ar fi: identitatea şi
patrimoniul, calificările sale, statutul, autorizarea, afilierea sau legăturile sale, drepturile de proprietate industrială,
de autor sau comercială ori recompense şi distincţii primite;
g)
drepturile consumatorului, inclusiv dreptul de a beneficia de reparare, de înlocuire sau de restituire a
contravalorii ca urmare a rezoluţiunii contractului, astfel cum sunt prevăzute de Legea
nr. 449/2003
privind
vânzarea produselor şi garanţiile asociate acestora, sau riscurile pe care consumatorul le poate întâmpina.
(2)
O practică comercială este, de asemenea, considerată ca fiind acţiune înşelătoare dacă, în contextul
prezentării situaţiei de fapt, ţinând cont de toate caracteristicile şi circumstanţele, determină sau este susceptibilă să
determine consumatorul mediu să ia o decizie de tranzacţionare pe care altfel nu ar fi luat-o. În acest caz, acţiunea
înşelătoare este determinată de:
a)
orice activitate de comercializare privind produsul, inclusiv publicitatea comparativă, creând o confuzie cu alt
produs, marca, numele sau cu alte semne distinctive ale unui concurent;
b)
nerespectarea de către comerciant a obligaţiilor prevăzute în codul de conduită pe care s-a angajat să îl
respecte, dacă:
(i)
angajamentul său nu este o aspiraţie, ci este ferm şi poate fi verificat;
(ii)
acesta indică, în cadrul unei practici comerciale, că s-a angajat să respecte codul.
Art. 7.

(1)
O practică comercială este considerată ca fiind omisiune înşelătoare dacă, în contextul prezentării
situaţiei de fapt, ţinând cont de toate caracteristicile şi circumstanţele acesteia, precum şi de limitele mijloacelor de
comunicare utilizate pentru transmiterea informaţiei omite o informaţie esenţială necesară consumatorului mediu,
ţinând cont de context, pentru luarea unei decizii de tranzacţionare în cunoştinţă de cauză şi, prin urmare,
determină sau este susceptibilă să determine luarea de către consumator a unei decizii de tranzacţionare pe care
altfel nu ar fi luat-o.
(2)
O practică comercială este, de asemenea, considerată ca fiind omisiune înşelătoare atunci când, ţinând cont
de aspectele prevăzute la alin. (1), un comerciant ascunde sau oferă într-un mod neclar, neinteligibil, ambiguu ori în
contratimp o informaţie esenţială sau nu indică intenţia comercială a practicii, în cazul în care aceasta nu rezultă
deja din context, şi când, în oricare dintre cazuri, consumatorul mediu este determinat sau este susceptibil a fi
