April 20, 2002 NYC, the day I got to act opposite one of the great actresses of all time, Irene Worth, as Lord Darlington in a staged concert of Noel Coward's "After the Ball", a musical version of Wilde's "Lady Windermere's Fan". This lovely song is little known. Thanks to our director, Bob Diamond, for getting Irene Worth to perform this, and for allowing me to exit kissing her hand and bowing, while holding an F#. Constance Green is a most lovely Lady Windermere.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It's hard to comprehend the amount of plastic waste humans produce every single day. But the impact is impossible to ignore. However, the answer is not recycling -- it's reuse.
Irene Rompa studied organizational psychology at VU University Amsterdam, but soon realized that while she loved her studies, what really makes her happy is improving the world. Over the last few years, Irene has initiated and worked on different projects that create awareness around the issue of sustainability.

Illuminating the struggle of characters whether seen through a comedic or a serious lens is a hallmark of Martha Coolidge's work from her first documentaries to her remarkable pioneering achievements in feature and television films. Considered a consummate filmmaker she is also known as an "Actor's Director" due to her knack to inspire actors like Robert Duvall, Halley Berry, Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage to give very special performances. With an excellent eye for casting and her attention to detail Coolidge has brought stories to life in historic, contemporary and futuristic settings.
Early in 2009 American Girl released their first contemporary film American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong directed by Ms. Coolidge that premiered on HBO. Just recently this powerful and very honest drama on school bullying was awarded the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Gold Award, their highest honor. The film stars Sammi Hanratty, Adair Tishler, Annabeth Gish, Jennifer Tilly and Timothy Bottoms . The film realistically portrays the escalation of bullying behavior and through story development helps empower its young female characters to learn what to do to stop it.
While making CHRISSA STANDS STRONG Ms. Coolidge paired up for the eighth time with her husband, Production Designer James Spencer (Rocky, Leathal Weapon 3, POLTERGEIST & Introducing Dorothy Dandridge - for which he won an Emmy and an Art Director's Guild Award.) They enjoy their partnership on and off screen. "Our shorthand is always helpful and we compliment each other's talent."
In April Ms. Coolidge's thriller TRIBUTE adapted from Nora Robert's current bestseller, was aired on Lifetime. In TRIBUTE, Brittany Murphy plays Cilla, as she searches for a new life. She renovates her famous grandmother's country home in Virginia and uncovers a mystery regarding her grandmother's death becoming the next target of the murderer. With Jason Lewis, Tippi Hedren and Diana Scarwid the atmosphere is lush, the characters well developed and the action intense. The film was invited as a theatrical entry into the Shanghai Film Festival.
Coolidge's delightful comedy-mystery MATERIAL GIRLS starred Hilary and Haylie Duff, Anjelica Huston and Lukas Haas. The film tells the story of two silly "celebrity" sisters, who inherit their fathers make-up company and loose it in a corporate swindle, falling from "Riches to rags in a single day." Funny and smart it spoofs the cult of the "Celebritant" with talented actors like Ty Hodges, Brent Spiner, Obba Babatunde and Faith Prince.
For her hit romantic comedy from Paramount, THE PRINCE & ME, starring Julia Stiles, Luke Mably and Miranda Richardson, Ms. Coolidge leapt at the opportunity to create and contrast the rural and academic US mid-west with the exotic European lifestyle of Danish royalty. "The cast and crew came from the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland, Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic and we shot in three different countries. It was an adventure in differing working styles to say nothing of communication! I learned that the language of human behavior is universal, but translating everything requires time and patience."

"Comedy is a uniquely serious business." Says Ms. Coolidge. "On, OUT TO SEA Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Dyan Cannon, Donald O'Connor and Elaine Stritch not only danced up a storm but their irreverence kept us all laughing. I enjoy tackling different styles of comedy but my basic approach is to make the characters very believable and root their personalities. They can react very inappropriately to events but it has to come from somewhere real. What's funny to me is always the surprise of unexpected truth."
Her television projects have included the multiple Emmy winning Introducing Dorothy Dandridge with Halle Berry, and If These Walls Could Talk II, 1972. Irene Worth, CBE (June 23, 1916 – March 9, 2002) was an American stage and screen actress who became one of the leading stars of the English and American theatre. (She pronounced her given name with three syllables: "I-REE-nee".)
Early life
Harriet Elizabeth Abrams was born in Fairbury, Nebraska to a Mennonite family. Her parents, Agnes Thiessen and Henry Abrams, were educators. They moved from Nebraska to California in 1920. She was educated at Newport Harbor High School, Newport Beach, California, Santa Ana Junior College, Santa Ana, California and UCLA.
Career
Shakespeare and the West End
She joined the Old Vic company in 1951, worked with Tyrone Guthrie and there played Desdemona, Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Portia in The Merchant of Venice and her first Lady Macbeth. The company went off to South Africa with Worth as one of the leading ladies.
In 1953, she joined the fledgling Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario for its inaugural season. There she was the principal leading lady, performing under an enormous tent with Alec Guinness in All's Well That Ends Well and Richard III. "Binkie" Beaumont brought her back to London in N. C. Hunter's "Chekhovian" drama, A Day by the Sea, with a cast that included John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. She joined the Midland Theatre Company in Coventry for Ugo Betti's The Queen and the Rebels. Her transformation from "a rejected slut cowering at her lover's feet into a redemption of regal poise" ensured a transfer to London, where Kenneth Tynan wrote of her technique: "It is grandiose, heartfelt, marvellously controlled, clear as crystal and totally unmoving."

It had a lot of impact on the whole family, but it was worth it because after the operation she could hear the voices of her mom, dad and brother for the first time. Considered a consummate filmmaker she is also known as an "Actor's Director" due to her knack to inspire actors like Robert Duvall, Halley Berry, Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage to give very special performances. With an excellent eye for casting and her attention to detail Coolidge has brought stories to life in historic, contemporary and futuristic settings.
Early in 2009 American Girl released their first contemporary film American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong directed by Ms. Coolidge that premiered on HBO. Just recently this powerful and very honest drama on school bullying was awarded the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Gold Award, their highest honor. The film stars Sammi Hanratty, Adair Tishler, Annabeth Gish, Jennifer Tilly and Timothy Bottoms . The film realistically portrays the escalation of bullying behavior and through story development helps empower its young female characters to learn what to do to stop it.
While making CHRISSA STANDS STRONG Ms. Coolidge paired up for the eighth time with her husband, Production Designer James Spencer (Rocky, Leathal Weapon 3, POLTERGEIST & Introducing Dorothy Dandridge - for which he won an Emmy and an Art Director's Guild Award.) They enjoy their partnership on and off screen. "Our shorthand is always helpful and we compliment each other's talent."
In April Ms. Coolidge's thriller TRIBUTE adapted from Nora Robert's current bestseller, was aired on Lifetime. In TRIBUTE, Brittany Murphy plays Cilla, as she searches for a new life. She renovates her famous grandmother's country home in Virginia and uncovers a mystery regarding her grandmother's death becoming the next target of the murderer. With Jason Lewis, Tippi Hedren and Diana Scarwid the atmosphere is lush, the characters well developed and the action intense. The film was invited as a theatrical entry into the Shanghai Film Festival.
Coolidge's delightful comedy-mystery MATERIAL GIRLS starred Hilary and Haylie Duff, Anjelica Huston and Lukas Haas. The film tells the story of two silly "celebrity" sisters, who inherit their fathers make-up company and loose it in a corporate swindle, falling from "Riches to rags in a single day." Funny and smart it spoofs the cult of the "Celebritant" with talented actors like Ty Hodges, Brent Spiner, Obba Babatunde and Faith Prince.

It was an adventure in differing working styles to say nothing of communication! I learned that the language of human behavior is universal, but translating everything requires time and patience."

This is a love story we filmed about Adrian's proposal to the youngest of my 7 sisters, Irene. Not only is Adrian now my new brother in law, he has also been part of the Siounis team from the very beginning.
Their wedding day was long awaited for and we were all very excited. We couldn't wait to share this video with all of our family and friends. Irene had not seen the video prior so she did not know that we had filmed the making of her engagement ring. Her reaction to it was priceless...very emotional.
We would like to thank Barry at Laurenten Jewellers for his patience & for letting us film in his store. We would also like to thank Demosthene Elementary School for letting us film during one of Irene's classes. The final part of the film was shot at Adrian's family cottage up north where we got beautiful shots, but had a lot of challenges to overcome. At the end, it was all worth it.
We welcome Adrian into our family officially & may God bless their marriage.

"When Your Hands Are Tied" is not for profit educational film created to be freely distributed. This film explores the unique ways in which native youth are finding to express themselves in the contemporary world while maintaining strong traditional lives.
Since Native American youth do not often see reflections of themselves or their communities in mainstream media, we wanted to make a film that features contemporary youth and role models who are finding exciting and positive ways to direct their lives. We also wanted young people to learn the importance of self-motivation in combination with traditional teachings to help prepare for the challenges of everyday life.
Some of the people we meet are:
Navajo rappers, who rap in Navajo, with a mission to communicate to young people the importance of embracing mainstream culture and education as well as their own native languages, customs and traditions.
Navajo punk rock musicians, whose style is Native American Punk-Rock or “Alter Native” with strong sociopolitical messages about government oppression, relocation of indigenous people, eco-cide, genocide, domestic violence and human rights.
Apache Skate Boarders, who through their travels across the country, have learned about filmmaking, photography, and self worth. They have also learned how to carry the message of who they are and where they come from as they pursue their own individual goals.
The Former Governor of Nambe Pueblo, an avid dancer started a break-dance team to help kids stay active and healthy. The break-dancers come from many tribes around the southwest and are encouraged to participate in their traditional dances at home.

Siblings Irene and Sjoerd were both born deaf. But 9 years ago, at the age of 21, Irene decided to get an cochlear implant. It had a lot of impact on the whole family, but it was worth it because after the operation she could hear the voices of her mom, dad and brother for the first time. Her brother Sjoerd is still in doubt. Having surgery is a big risk but he really wants to hear what Irene now can hear. Will he follow and also take a CI?

Siblings Irene and Sjoerd were both born deaf. But 9 years ago, at the age of 21, Irene decided to get an cochlear implant. It had a lot of impact on the whole family, but it was worth it because after the operation she could hear the voices of her mom, dad and brother for the first time. Her brother Sjoerd is still in doubt. Having surgery is a big risk but he really wants to hear what Irene now can hear. Will he follow and also take a CI?

Directly north of (ie behind) Haghia Sophia are the walls shielding the imperial enclave of Topkapý Palace. Part command centre for a massive military empire, part archetypal Eastern pleasure dome, the palace was the hub of Ottoman power for more than three centuries, until it was superseded by the Dolmabahçe Palace in 1853. In terms of lavish decor and exquisite siting, it rivals Granada's Alhambra and beats hands down almost anything else in Europe. At least half a day is needed to explore the place fully, although given the high admissions you might want to take a full day over it to get your money's worth. If pushed for time, the must-see elements are the Harem, Imperial Treasury and the views from the fourth and innermost courtyard.
Entrance is via the Imperial Gate (Bab-i Hümayun), erected by the Sultan Fatih in 1478 and decorated with niches that during Ottoman times were used to display the severed heads of rebels and criminals. The gate leads into the first of a series of four courts that become more private the deeper into the complex you penetrate. The First Court was public and not considered part of the palace proper. It housed a hospital and dormitories for the palace guards, hence the popular name, Court of the Janissaries. Off to the left is the church of Haghia Irene (Aya Irini Kilisesi), built by Justinian and thus a contemporary of Haghia Sophia. It has the distinction of being the only pre-Ottoman-conquest church in the city that was never turned into a mosque. Closed most of the time, the church serves as a concert venue during the International Istanbul Music Festival.
Still in the First Court, down the hill to the left, is the superb Archaeological Museum, but the palace proper is entered through the Disneyesque gate ahead. Tickets can be bought on the right, just before you reach the gate, beside the Executioner's Fountain, where the chief axeman washed his blade after carrying out his grisly work. The heads of his victims were also displayed on top of the truncated columns that stand on either side of the fountain.
A semi-public space, the enormous Second Court is where the business of running the empire was carried out. This is where the viziers of the imperial council sat in session in the divan, overlooking gardens landscaped with cypresses, plane trees and rose bushes. Where once there would have been crowds of petitioners awaiting their turn for an audience, nowadays there are queues lined up waiting to get in to the Harem , an introverted complex of around 300 brilliantly tiled chambers on several levels, connected by arcaded courts and fountain gardens. Unfortunately, access is severely limited: you must wait to join a group that leaves every half-hour and is led through no more than a dozen chambers by an official guide. It's not the ideal way to see the place - locked in a crowd and herded around - but it's the only way. Tickets are sold separately, from a window located beside the Harem entrance.
Around from the Harem ticket window, a low brick building topped by shallow domes is the former State Treasury, present home of an exhibition of arms and armour, interesting for the contrast between cumbersome, bludgeonly European swords and the lighter, more deadly-looking Ottoman model. Across the gardens, a long row of ventilation chimneys punctuates the roof line of the enormous kitchens, which catered for up to 5,000 inhabitants of the palace.
They now contain a collection of ceramics, glass and silverware, much of it originating from China and Japan and imported via Central Asia along the legendary Silk Route. The earliest pieces are Chinese celadon, particularly valued by the sultans because it was supposed to change colour when brought into contact with poison.
All paths in the Second Court converge on the Gate of Felicity (Bab-üs Saadet), which serves as the backdrop every year for a performance of Mozart's Abduction From the Seraglio - again, part of the International Istanbul Music Festival. The gate also gives access to the Third Court.
The Third Court was the holy of holies, the sultan's private domain. Confronting all who enter is the Audience Chamber (Arz Odasý), which is where, until it was supplanted in the role by the Sublime Porte , foreign ambassadors would present their credentials. Although the sultan would be present on such occasions, he would never deign to speak with a non-Turk and all conversation was conducted via the grand vizier.
Off to the right is the Hall of the Campaign Pages (Seferli Koðuþu), whose task it was to look after the royal wardrobe. They did an excellent job: there's a perfectly preserved 550-year-old, red-and-gold silk kaftan worn by Mehmet II, conqueror of Constantinople.
Things get even more glittery next door in the Imperial Treasury (Hazine). Many of the items here were made specifically for the palace by a team of court artisans, which at its height numbered over 600. A lot of what's displayed here has never left

Hurricane Sandy: The Day After 10/30/2012
Hurricane Sandy, the superstorm that yesterday became the largest storm to make landfall north of North Carolina, has left an estimated 6 to 7 million East Coast residents without power and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
Sandy, which weakened considerably as it moved inland, is now a tropical storm centered around southern Pennsylvania, about 90 miles west of Philadelphia.
We’ll continue to monitor and collect information on Sandy here throughout today, with a particular emphasis on the damage she has left behind.
The Associated Press is reporting 16 deaths from the storm, including seven in New York, which President Barack Obama has declared a federal disaster area, along with Long Island.
The more southern and eastern areas of New York City were among the hardest hit. Storm surge and near-record rainfall caused widespread flooding, while high winds knocked out power for more than a million of the city’s residents at various times throughout the night, according to power utility Con Edison.
“This is the largest storm-related outage in our history," said Con Edison Senior Vice President for Electric Operations John Miksad. The previous record was the more than 200,000 outages caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011. As of 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, about 634,000 New York City residents were without power.

KIT presents the US premiere of The Worth of Women, adapted from Moderata Fontes text, translated by Virginia Cox. The Worth of Women presents seven women of different ages and experience dialoging about gender equality and the responsibility of husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.
The Worth of Women is directed by Jay Stern in collaboration with Laura Caparrotti, original music by Erato Kremmyda, and lyricist Maggie-Kate Coleman. Set and Costumes by Lauren Page Russell. The cast includes Carlotta Brentan, Laura Caparrotti, Tali Custer, Aileen Lanni, Marta Mondelli, Irene Turri, and Annie Watkins. Assistant to the directors: Mario Merone.
