MorFootage from the arrest of Paris terrorist attacker
Salah Abdeslam shows the moment he is shot in the leg as he tries to flee police - and dropping a mysterious note as he is taken down.
Abdeslam was seized in
Belgium on Friday in the
Brussels neighbourhood of
Molenbeek, following a four-month manhunt for the 'world's most wanted terrorist'.
One previously unseen video shows the 26-year-old terror suspect exiting his safehouse, and as he finds himself confronted by a number of armed police, he starts running down the street.
The footage from Friday's raid shows Salah Abdeslam, dressed in a white hoodie, seizing an opportunity to escape.
However, armed police instantly open fire, and the terror suspect is hit in the leg by at least one bullet, and police arrest him.
Another clip from his arrest shows Abdeslam dropping a mysterious piece of paper, which falls out of his trousers as he is taken away by police.
Several armed officers can be seen dragging the struggling Abdeslam down the street when something resembling a folded piece of paper drops from inside his trouser leg.
It is not known if the note is of any significance to the investigation, or if Belgian police are in possession of it.
It is understood that
Belgian and
French intelligence services located his hideout after listening in on phone conversations at the funeral of his brother
Brahim Abdeslam, who blew himself up in the
Paris attacks.
One mourner is thought to have let slip vital information which allowed police to close the net around Abdeslam in Molenbeek, and finally snare him in a raid triggered by a pizza delivery.
Paris prosecutor
Francois Molins said Abdeslam had played a 'central role' in planning the November attacks which killed 130 people, with terrorist group
ISIS claiming responsibility.
Mr Molins said Abdeslam had planned to do the same as his brother at the
Stade de France before changing his mind.
'These first statements, which should be taken cautiously, leave a whole series of issues that Salah Abdeslam must explain,' Mr Molins told a Paris news conference.
Investigators believe Abdeslam rented rooms in the Paris area to be used by the attackers and a car, which he used to drive them to the Stade de France before heading to the
18th arrondissement in the north of the capital.
Days after the attacks an explosives-filled suicide vest was found in Paris in an area where mobile phone signals indicated Abdeslam had been.
French President Francois Hollande said Abdeslam was 'directly linked to the preparation, the organisation and, unfortunately, the perpetration of these attacks'.
His lawyer
Sven Mary said he is will fight the extradition, however, which legal experts said is likely to delay but not prevent his handover to the
French authorities.
French
Justice Minister Jean-Jacques Urvoas said on Saturday that Belgium will hand over Abdeslam to
France in no more than three months.
Abdeslam's arrest on Friday was hailed by
European and US leaders, while
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said it dealt a 'major blow' to IS jihadists operating in
Europe.
But the minister warned that the threat level remained 'extremely high' and said France was deploying extra police officers to its borders to step up controls following discussions with
Interpol.
Former small-time criminal Abdeslam is believed to be the last surviving member of the ten-man jihadist team that carried out the Paris attacks.
